Integrating multiple features content-based image retrieval can overcome the problems of single feature, but how to organize these features and feature representation methods is difficult in image retrieval. In this paper, an automatic feature weight assignment approach based on genetic algorithm is proposed. The problem of weight assignment is firstly changed into optimization problem, and genetic algorithm is used for finding the optimization weight in order to get the best retrieval results. The experimental results show that the recall and precision of this proposed approach is better than the others' weight assignment methods. This approach is robust to various kinds of features and feature representation methods, and it can get the best feature combination for image retrieval. © 2003 IEEE.

A two-stage face recognition algorithm is proposed. In the first stage, the mutual information match is applied to reduce the candidate pattern amount in the database. In the second stage, the principal component analysis (PCA) and linear discriminant analysis (LDA) are applied to the probe image to extract the corresponding features, which will be used in classification. The approach is tested on ORL database, Shimon database and Harvard database. The experimental results demonstrate that the performance of this system is superior to other algorithms on the same database. © 2003 IEEE.

This paper presents a learning algorithm of synergetic neural network that can be realized by a 2-layered network. A main feature of the new algorithm is that it is of high accuracy and quadratic convergence rate. Further it avoids the error being accumulated. The experiment results show that the algorithm enables the synergetic neural network to recognize images more effectively compared with previous algorithms.

Form document analysis is one of the most essential tasks in document analysis and recognition. One of the most fundamental and crucial tasks is the extraction of the reference lines which are contained in almost all form documents. This paper presents an efficient methodology for the complicated grey-level form image processing. We construct a non-orthogonal wavelet with adjustable rectangle supports and offer algorithms for the extraction of the reference lines based on the strip growth method using the multiresolution wavelet sub images. We have compared this system with the popular Hough transform (HT) based and the novel orthogonal wavelet based methods. As shown in the experiments, the proposed algorithmdemonstrates high performance and fast speed for the complicated form images. This system is also effective for the form images with slight skew. © 2003 IEEE.

The automatic detection of significant changes in imagery is important in a number of intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) tasks. An automated capability known as the Order of Battle Change Fusion (OBCF) system is described for detecting, fusing, and tracking changes over time in multisensor imagery. OBCF uses multiple change detection algorithms to exploit different aspects of change in multi-sensor images, normalcy models that provide a physical basis for detecting change and estimating the performance of change detection algorithms, algorithm fusion to combine the results from multiple change detection algorithms in order to enhance and maintain performance over changing operating conditions, and stationary tracking to provide a seamless history of image changes over time across different sensing modalities. Preliminary experimental results using electro-optical (EO) and synthetic aperture radar (SAR) imagery are presented.

Infrared imaging system performance models (IRISPM) have become increasingly important in providing performance estimates for developmental infrared systems. Many factors such as the target and background signature, atmospheric attenuation, sensor response, image processing algorithms contribute to detection performance. For accurate evaluation of the IR system performance, all these factors should be considered. Traditionally, IRISPM utilize the minimum resolvable temperature difference (MRTD) and the Johnson criteria to predict IR imaging system field performance. However, these kinds ofperformance models are not suitable for JR imaging system with machine vision. To make up for the default of the above performance models, this paper provides a generic JR imaging system performance evaluation model based on the machine vision, and introduces system power transfer function (PTF) to describe the total influence of subsystems on the performance. The emphasis is put on the effect of background clutter and imaging processing algorithm on the detection performance. And the theoretical expression of the Signal-to-Interference (background clutter and system noise) ratio (SIR) is derived. Then, system detection range, acquisition probability and false alarm probability are acquired according to the given detection algorithm threshold. © 2017 SPIE.

In this paper, a multi-mode image tracking system was designed, which uses the distributed structure to fuse the tracking results of these modes. Because of noise in the image, the presence of occlusion, and deformation of the tracked target, some tracking algorithms may fail. The aim of the paper is to merge the advantages of all tracking algorithms to obtain robust behaviour. There are three tracking models applied in this system, based on region, B-snake, and distinguished points. Each of these three modes contributes to the fusion center, and communicates with other models. Results show that this system could overcome common problems in tracking.

Smart vision chips will be the basic component Of future intelligent systems. Conventional vision systems, using a CCD camera and a digital processor, have mainly been limited to specific industrial and military applications due to the cost, size and complexity. Smart vision chips, which include both the photosensors and elements of (analog and digital) parallel processing, have been under research for more than a decade and illustrate promising capabilities. The system we use is based on an artificial multi-mode programmable retina sensor. This retina is a CMOS image sensor developed at IEF (Institut d'Electronique Fondamentale, Universite Paris xi, Orsay-France), and includes some silicon analog and digital image processing algorithms. We describe a system, consisting of a Minicar platform and one or two CMOS retina sensors. Specifically, we demonstrated how the hardware capabilities of the retina sensors can be used in enabling the system to reliably and autonomously track a laser point. We present the data issued from the retina sensors and we focus on the analysis of the hardware-software co-designed system.

The BiCG and QMR methods are well-known Krylov subspace iterative methods for the solution of linear systems of equations with a large nonsymmetric, nonsingular matrix. However. little is known of the performance of these methods when they are applied to the computation of approximate solutions of linear systems of equations with a matrix of ill-determined rank. Such linear systems are known as linear discrete ill-posed problems. We describe an application of the BiCG and QMR methods to the solution of linear discrete ill-posed problems that arise in image restoration, and compare these methods to the conjugate gradient method applied to the associated normal equations and to total variation-penalized Tikhonov regularization.
