Usually, gray-level images are arranged as two-dimensional (NxM)-matrices. Tracing its contours is a common way to obtain information about an imaged object, such as position and orientation, or for purposes of object recognition. This paper describes the generation of contour-based object descriptions by edge-detection and contour-tracing. A complex differential operator is used to detect edges in the image. In addition to the gradient, also the local orientation of edges can be computed with an accuracy of approximately 5 degree(s). This edge-oriented description, which is still arranged as a two-dimensional matrix, occupies twice as much memory as the original gray-level image (gradient plus orientation) and there is no knowledge about the course of the contour. In addition to that, in most cases this edge-oriented image is fragmentary, due to illumination restrictions and shades. For this reason the imaged contour is traced using a Kalman-filter-based algorithm. The contour tracer connects and completes these edge fragments. The algorithm is able to follow the course of a contour without any prior knowledge, even if its direction changes erratically. It has been tested successfully in several applications in industrial production testing (for example for controlling an optical range sensor of a 3-D-measurement system in assembly lines).

To make robotic manipulators function intelligently in an application such as flexible manufacturing, sensory feedback from an unknown environment is needed. Visual feedback represents a typical sensing system in which camera images provide feedback information, for instance, in grasping a moving object. Because image processing is time consuming, information about target position can not be obtained instantaneously for the controller. Because of the inherent time delay, the present and future position of the object has to be predicted in real-time. Since the dynamics of the objects are assumed to be unknown, the prediction will be accomplished by means of an auto-regressive discrete-time model. The predicted values and current end-effector position determine the desired trajectory point (subgoal) for the motion. The planner adapts on-line to changes in the target position. The desired trajectory is tracked by the end-effector controller. After grasping the object, problems may arise in controlling the motion of the manipulator due to the mass of the object attached to the gripper. An adaptive controller is proposed to deal with load uncertainty in the object. A simulation program is presented which demonstrates the task of grasping a moving object by a manipulator using visual feedback.

Searching a global optimum point in a multimodal performance surface is unavoidable in many DSP applications and, in these cases, the algorithms based on gradient estimation such as the method of steepest decent are unsuitable. To overcome this problem, a random search algorithm which we called 2-D Genetic Optimizer Algorithm (2-D GOA) is developed in this paper. In addition, to illustrate the advantage of 2-D GOA, an application of this algorithm in sequence image coding is given also.

Presents some hardware and software considerations regarding communication problems for parallel machines, whose distributed control can be modeled by means of an oriented multigraph without cycles. The results are applied to a pyramidal multi-SIMD architecture, which is very efficient for many low- and intermediate-level image processing and analysis algorithms. A programming style, named coprogramming, is well suited for the design of parallel software for this class of parallel machines.< >

Many important problems in real -time image processing involve both high computational requirements and a complex and substantial data flow. The system designer must weigh the difficulty of partitioning the problem to fit onto commercial hardware versus the expense of embedding the algorithm in an ASIC or an ASIC chip set subject to constraints on device and pin count, data path complexity, etc. A consistent system architecture evaluation methodology and tool set for addressing the implementation of such problems in a combination of software and hardware is sorely needed;this paper presents first steps in that direction. In order to demonstrate a typical set of trade -offs, we cite the pan- zoom -rotate (PZR) problem, i.e., the problem of processing an input scene for viewing at arbitrary translation, rotation, and magnification in real time. This problem requires both a very high computational rate and high image data bandwidth;sophisticated memory addressing and management are also needed, as access patterns to the input data are non -trivial. We are using the Architecture Design and Assessment System (ADAS) and a number of other tools to determine and model the computational and data flow constraints of this problem and to experiment with different partitioning strategies for the algorithms. We describe the methods we have used to determine these constraints, why these constraints rule out implementation via commercial DSP chips, and how our architecture assessment tools have been used to develop candidate, highly pipelined ASIC architectures with sophisticated internal data buffering which meet these constraints. © 1989 SPIE. The framework is the perception control problem, ie how to control the sensors and the siggal processing units, in order to achieve a given perception task. We describe here a subsymbolic level, based on probabilistic techniques, but keeping in mind an integration with an artificial intelligence system. After formulating the problem, we derive an algorithm for such a control in simulation, and we show the results of the optimization of the perception task. Then we conclude by describing how to interface this system with a symbolic level.

It is an exciting and emerging interdisciplinary area in which a wide rangeof techniques and methods arebeing studied for dealing with large, complex, and dynamic problems. The joint conferences also promoted cro- fertilization over these exciting and yet closely related areas, which had a s- ni?cant impact on the advancement of these important technologies. Speci?c areas included neural computation, quantum computation, evolutionarycom- tation, DNA computation, fuzzy computation, granular computation, arti?cial life, etc. , with innovative applications to knowledge discovery, ?nance, ope- tions research, and more. In addition to the large number of submitted papers, we were honored with the presence of six renowned keynote speakers.
