The paper describes some face detection algorithms using skin color segmentation, Haar-like features and neural networks. The segmentation using skin color labels promising input image areas that may contain faces. The usage of Haar-like features allows fast rejection of the majority of background. Then, the ensemble of retinally connected neural networks performs the final classification of the rest image windows using improved face search strategy across scale and position. The proposed search strategy applies inverse image scale pyramid, adaptive scanning step and window acceptance to decrease the number of windows which should be processed by the classifier.

It is believed by many that three-dimensional (3D) television will be the next logical development toward a more natural and vivid home entertaiment experience. While classical 3D approach requires the transmission of two video streams, one for each view, 3D TV systems based on depth image rendering (DIBR) require a single stream of monoscopic images and a second stream of associated images usually termed depth images or depth maps, that contain per-pixel depth information. Depth map is a two-dimensional function that contains information about distance from camera to a certain point of the object as a function of the image coordinates. By using this depth information and the original image it is possible to reconstruct a virtual image of a nearby viewpoint by projecting the pixels of available image to their locations in 3D space and finding their position in the desired view plane. One of the most significant advantages of the DIBR is that depth maps can be coded more efficiently than two streams corresponding to left and right view of the scene, thereby reducing the bandwidth required for transmission, which makes it possible to reuse existing transmission channels for the transmission of 3D TV. This technique can also be applied for other 3D technologies such as multimedia systems. In this paper we propose an advanced wavelet domain scheme for the reconstruction of stereoscopic images, which solves some of the shortcommings of the existing methods discussed above. We perform the wavelet transform of both the luminance and depth images in order to obtain significant geometric features, which enable more sensible reconstruction of the virtual view. Motion estimation employed in our approach uses Markov random field smoothness prior for regularization of the estimated motion field. The evaluation of the proposed reconstruction method is done on two video sequences which are typically used for comparison of stereo reconstruction algorithms. The results demonstrate a

Fourier transform imaging spectroscopy (FTIS) can be performed with a Fizeau imaging interferometer by recording a series of images with various optical path differences (OPDs) between subapertures of the optical system and post-processing. The quality of the spectral data is affected by misregistration of the raw image measurements. A Fizeau FTIS system possesses unique degrees of freedom that can be used to facilitate image registration without further complication of the system design. We describe a registration technique based on the fact that certain spatial frequencies of the raw imagery are independent of the OPDs introduced between subapertures. Operational and post-processing tradeoffs associated with this technique are described, and the technique is demonstrated using computer-simulated data with image shift misregistrations under realistic noise conditions.

The Hyperspectral Polarimetric Imaging Testbed contains a VNIR, SWIR, and three-axis imaging polarimeter, each operating simultaneously through a common fore-optic. The system was designed for the detection of man-made objects in natural scenes. The imagery produced by the various imaging legs of the system is readily fused, due to the identical image format, FOV and IFOV of each optical leg. The fused imagery is shown to be useful for the detection of a variety of man-made surfaces. This paper describes the general design and function of the mature system, the Stochastic Gaussian Classifier processing method used for hyperspectral anomaly detection, the polarimetric image processing methods, and a logical decision structure for the identification of various surface types. The paper will also describe in detail the detection results for a variety of targets obtained in field testing conducted with the system.

We describe and analyse a generalization of a parametric segmentation technique adapted to Gamma distributed SAR images to a simple non parametric noise model. The partition is obtained by minimizing the stochastic complexity of a quantized version on Q levels of the SAR image and lead to a criterion without parameters to be tuned by the user. We analyse the reliability of the proposed approach on synthetic images. The quality of the obtained partition will be studied for different possible strategies. In particular, one will discuss the reliability of the proposed optimization procedure. Finally, we will precisely study the performance of the proposed approach in comparison with the statistical parametric technique adapted to Gamma noise. These studies will be led by analyzing the number of misclassified pixels, the standard Hausdorff distance and the number of estimated regions.

We present a new approach for computer-generated integral photography (IP) based on ray tracing, for the reconstruction of high quality photorealistic 3-D images of increased complexity. With the proposed methodology, all the optical elements of a single-stage IP capturing setup are physically modeled for the production of real and virtual orthoscopic IP images with depth control. This approach is straightforward for translating a computer-generated 3-D scene to an IP image, and constitutes a robust methodology for developing modules that can be easily integrated in existing ray tracers. An extension of this technique enables the generation of photorealistic 3-D videos [integral videography (IV)] and provides an invaluable tool for the development of 3-D video processing algorithms. In this paper, we present a set of numerical tools, namely principal component analysis, clustering methods, and a covariance propagation model, that when appropriately assembled, form what we refer to as the mean-class propagation (MCP) method. The MCP method generates clusters of similar class materials in hyperspectral imaging (HSI) scenes while preserving scene spectral clutter information for radiometric transport modeling. We will demonstrate how various implementations of the MCP method can be employed to generate unique HSI products with varying levels of statistical realism across regions in the scene. Such implementations of the MCP method, compared with traditional pixel-based methods, may allow for faster generation of HSI scene data, better insight on how environmental conditions alter the statistical properties of measured scene clutter, and lays a foundation for the formulation of more robust spectral matched filter operations. To quantify the differences between the MCP method and a pixel-based method, we present a comparison computational processing time for each method.

An autostereoscopic imaging system. which displays moving actual images created from 2D video and depth data, is proposed. The system consists of a depth camera. signal processing algorithms, and an integral display prototype. The specifications are as follows: (a) Depth camera: a monocular VGA video camera with optical distance sensor captures 2D texture image and its depth map simultaneously. (b) Signal processing: 10 x 10 parallax images are created from the video stream, and the angle between two neighboring parallax images is 0.8 degrees. (c) Display: The display device is contact type (LCD) or projection type (LOOS), and the optical device is a microlens-array. 2D resolution of the 3D image is 720 cycle/radian at a viewing distance, and a viewing zone is about 8 degrees. Noticeable defects due to occlusions are not found within the viewing zone. The method of transmission of texture and depth data has higher compatibility with conventional coding technologies than transmission using compressed parallax images. And the transmission method enables the users to choose various types of displays and the way of displaying the contents. Therefore we believe that thus system is a candidate for the future 3D television system.

This paper presents a classification work-performed on industrial parts using artificial vision, SVM and a combimation of classifiers. Prior to this study, defect detection by human inspectors. Unfortunately, the time involved is performed in the inspection procedure was far too long and the missclassification rate too high. Our project consists in detecting anomalies under manufacturer production and cost constraints as well as in classifying the anomalies among twenty listed categories. Manufacturer's specifications require a minimum of ten inspections per second without a decrease in the quality of the produced parts. This problem can be solved with a classification system relying on a real-time machine vision. To fulfill both real time and quality constraints, two classification algorithms and a tree based classification method were compared. The first one. Hyperrectangle based, has proved to be well adapted for real-time constraints. The second one, based on Support Vector Machine (SVM), is more robust, more complex and more greedy regarding the computing time. Finally, naive rules were defined, to build a decision tree and to combine it with one of the previous classification algorithms.

Modem imaging systems are highly sensitive in a large dynamic range, which can give images consisting of many signal levels. Presentation of such images with varying dynamic ranges on a display with a fixed number of greylevels is difficult without losing important visual information. This paper presents several algorithms for automatic dynamic range adaptation for images. All of the algorithms are suitable for and also implemented in realtime applications. They fall mainly into two categories: histogram modification techniques and frequency based techniques. Some of the algorithms are evaluated in a perception experiment, where the goal is to get the visually most attractive images, and the experiment shows that the frequency based techniques are superior to the histogram modification techniques. Some of the proposed algorithms have proven to give visually attractive images, where none or almost none of the important information is lost, for a large selection of images with varying dynamic ranges.
