We briefly describe a multigrid strategy for unilevel and two-level linear systems whose coefficient matrix A(n) belongs either to the Toeplitz class or to the cosine algebra of type III and such that A(n) can be naturally associated, in the spectral sense, with a polynomial function f. The interest of the technique is due to its optimal cost of O(N) arithmetic operations, where N is the size of the algebraic problem. We remark that these structures arise in certain 2D image restoration problems or can be used as preconditioners for more complicated image restoration problems.

Application of digital signal processing techniques to synthetic aperture focusing technique images

Synthetic aperture focusing technique (SAFT) has become a popular alternative to transmission-reception focused arrays (TRFA) in order to reduce hardware complexity and cost associated to ultrasonic (UT) imaging systems. A shortcoming of SAFT processing is that it introduces artifacts that distort the images. However, as SAFT is sequential, efficient digital processing algorithms can be used to improve image quality. In this paper, several digital processing techniques are proposed including apodization, deconvolution, dynamic focusing, deflection and envelope extraction. A pipeline architecture which allows execution of these algorithms in parallel for real-time imaging is also proposed. (C) 1999 Elsevier Science S.A. All rights reserved.

Mathematical morphology has become a widely-used technique for image processing and computer vision. Initially designed as a set theory, it was generalized to the set of gray-scale images and to the complete lattice framework. Despite this accredited theoretical evolution, contemporary practice in morphological algorithm development still lacks a standardized, mathematically rigorous algebraic structure that is specifically designed for image handling. The purpose of this paper is twofold: first, it is intended to give rise to a new morphological framework that overcomes the combinatorial explosion of algorithms needed to deal with all possible types of lattices and structuring functions. Second, it provides us with the essential tools to design and implement generic building blocks for morphological image operators.

The VIGILANTE project is a planned vision system capable of tracking and recognizing targets in real time, on a small airborne platform. The project consists of two parts, 1) the Viewing imager/Gimballed Instrumentation Laboratory (VIGIL), which is an infrared and visible sensor platform with appropriate optics and 2) the Analog Neural Three-dimensional processing Experiment (ANTE), a massive parallel, neural based, high-speed processor. The VIGIL platform is mounted on a helicopter equipped with Global Position System (GPS), Inertia Measurement Unit (IMU), gimbal, radio-link and anti-vibration platform. Also, a jet powered, radio controlled VIGILANTE Target Vehicle (VTV) has been manufactured and equipped with GPS. In the first stages of the project, the VIGIL system is used to acquire image sequences of the VTV for training and testing of the ANTE image recognition processor. Based on GPS and IMU input, the gimbal is pointed toward the VTV and acquires images. This paper describes the VIGIL system in detail. It discusses position-based pointing, tracking algorithms and the alignment procedure. Test imagery and an evaluation of the system will be presented.

Surface mounted technology (SMT) in automated assembly facilities requires the use of automatic surface-mount-device (SMD) placement machines. One of the problems involved in the electronic printed circuit board (PCB) assembly process is the verification of the SMD placement operation within tight tolerances. The high throughput of modern manufacturing lines along with the required accuracy demand the use of automatic inspection systems to verify SMD placement. image complexity of the board makes the use of machine vision for the inspection process a difficult task. This is complicated by the fact that misclassification errors should be kept to a minimum. Additionally, it is desirable that the inspection results provide enough information to be used for statistical process control (SPC). The strategy adopted to solve this problem was to simplify the complexity of the image by means of special illumination devices. The simplified image was then suitable for analysis by simple processing, segmentation, and detection algorithms that, sequentially applied to the image, met the required repeatability and accuracy specifications for the inspection system. The scope of this paper is to describe the techniques explored by the authors to solve the SMD inspection problem in order to develop a working industrial SMD inspection system.

This paper presents a new exponential behavior based entropy operator for extracting image edges. Edges can be detected by computing the entropy of brightness or hue in a local region of a picture. The entropy depends not only on the rate of change of brightness or hue, but also on the average brightness or hue. The experimental result verifies the efficiency of the new entropy operator.

A task in a distributed computing system consists of a set of related modules. Each of the modules will execute on one of the processors of the system and communicate with some other modules. In addition, precedence relationships may exist among the modules. Task allocation is an essential activity in distributed-software design. This activity is of importance to all phases of the development of a distributed system. This paper establishes task completion-time models and task allocation models for minimizing task completion time. Current work in this area is either at the experimental level or without the consideration of precedence relationships among modules. The development of mathematical models for the computation of task completion time and task allocation will benefit many real-time computer applications such as radar systems, navigation systems, industrial process control systems, image processing systems, and artificial intelligence oriented systems.

This paper presents a computer vision system for the acquisition and processing of 3-D images of wax dental imprints. The ultimate goal of the system is to measure a set of 10 orthodontic parameters that will be fed to an expert system for automatic diagnosis of occlusion problems. An approach for the acquisition of range images of both sides of the imprint is presented. Range is obtained from a shape-from-absorption technique applied to a pair of grey-level images obtained at two different wavelengths. The accuracy of the range values is improved using sensor fusion between the initial range image and a reflectance image from the pair of grey-level images. The improved range image is segmented in order to find the interstices between teeth and, following further processing, the type of each tooth on the profile. Once each tooth has been identified, its accurate location on the imprint is found using a region- growing approach and its shape is reconstructed with third degree polynomial functions. The reconstructed shape will be later used by the system to find specific features that are needed to estimate the orthodontic parameters.

Shape classification via linear granulometric moments is examined for patterns suffering varying degrees of edge noise. It is seen that recognition is quite poor even for modest amounts of noise and remains poor even when the patterns are first filtered by a close-open filter. Recognition accuracy is greatly improved, for both unfiltered and filtered images, by employing exterior granulometries. These are constructed by applying the various linear structuring-element sequences to the corresponding linear convex hulls of the noisy patterns. The resulting granulometric distributions are then not corrupted by noise-induced probability mass at the left of the pattern spectrum, thereby greatly diminishing the detrimental effects on the pattern spectrum moments.

Most of the information regarding the shape of polyhedral objects is preserved in the edges and the vertices of these objects. Gray level images of scenes containing such objects are often processed to extract edge and vertex information to produce equivalent line sketches. An accurate line sketch of a scene serves as an effective input to high level vision systems concerned with scene understanding or object recognition. The performance of these systems is therefore greatly dependent on the accuracy of the line sketch. The work reported in this paper addresses the issues associated with generating accurate line sketches from gray level images. The methods described here have been implemented and tested with real and synthetic images and are compared to other vertex or corner detection techniques. The performance of the vertex detector is assessed using simulation runs on images with varied signal-to-noise ratios. The computational performance of this algorithm is evaluated and assessed by operating directly on the gray-scale image.
