The simulation of remote sensing images is a useful tool for a variety of tasks, such as the definition of future Earth Observation systems, the optimization and evaluation of instrument specifications, especially for a new type sensor, and the development and validation of data processing algorithms. A scene simulator for optical hyperspectral data from 'HJ1A-HSI' is described in this paper. 'HJ1A-HSI' was carried on the Chinese small satellite HJ-1A, which was successfully launched on September 6th, 2008. Different from common hyperspectral sensor, 'HJ1A-HSI' belongs to the spatial imaging Fourier Transform spectrometer (IFTS). In contrast to the high-speed development of spatial IFTS, the corresponding image simulator is still at the starting stage and the simulation data is very ideal in most cases. To simulate more actual data, a simulation system is proposed in this paper, based on the analysis of spatial IFTS principle. This system puts emphasis on simulating the effects of typical artifacts, and consists of four parts: the calculation of input parameter, the radiance computation for one beam before interfered, the simulation of effects of typical artifacts and the interferogram acquisition. The methodology applied to the complete scene simulation and some sample results are presented and analyzed in this paper.

This paper presents a revisit of the traditional measurement of limiting resolution using tri-bar patterns of various digital imaging and image intensifier (I2) systems. Utilizing digital recording of target tri-bar images combined with modern image processing based "line scan" analysis, this reexamination will explore the utility and validity of measuring spatial limiting resolution of various digital electro-optical systems from high light to low light conditions. Also, this paper will provide a detailed line shape analysis of the tri-peak profiles derived from the limiting resolution measurements for low light level ranges provided by these electro-optical systems. Finally, this paper will examine an alternate method for determining limiting resolution using other modern off the shelf digital imaging algorithms/methods and compare this alternate method to the "line scan" method using the traditional tri-bar pattern system. Unmixing of the seabed for benthic habitat mapping in shallow coastal waters is a difficult problem due to the confounding effects of space variant bathymetry and water optical properties, which result in signatures for the same habitat classes to look different at the water surface across the image. This paper discusses different approaches to modify the linear unmixing approach to account for variable water optical properties and bathymetry and their implementation in the Hyperspectral Coastal image Analysis Toolbox (HyCIAT). This toolbox allows the processing of hyperspectral imagery of shallow coastal areas to estimate water column optical properties, bathymetry, and perform unmixing for bottom composition. HyCIAT has been developed as part of the UPRM Hyperspectral Solutionware project to develop software tools for hyperspectral image processing. The tool has been developed under the MATLABTM environment and it includes a series of algorithms developed by UPRM researches under a graphical user interface that facilitates its use by the remote sensing community. The paper describes algorithms implemented in the toolbox, gives an overview of the graphical user interface, and presents results of its applications to AVIRIS and AISA hyperspectral imagery collected over Kaneohe Bay in Hawaii and over Southwestern Puerto Rico, respectively. © 2009 SPIE.

The theory of linguistics teaches us the existence of a hierarchical structure in linguistic expressions, from letter to word root, and on to word and sentences. By applying syntax and semantics beyond words, one can further recognize the grammatical relationship between among words and the meaning of a sequence of words. This layered view of a spoken language is useful for effective analysis and automated processing. Thus, it is interesting to ask if a similar hierarchy of representation of visual information does exist. A class of techniques that have a similar nature to the linguistic parsing is found in the Lempel-Ziv incremental parsing scheme. Based on a new class of multidimensional incremental parsing algorithms extended from the Lempel-Ziv incremental parsing, a new framework for image retrieval, which takes advantage of the source characterization property of the incremental parsing algorithm, was proposed recently. With the incremental parsing technique, a given image is decomposed into a number of patches, called a parsed representation. This representation can be thought of as a morphological interface between elementary pixel and a higher level representation. In this work, we examine the properties of two-dimensional parsed representation in the context of imagery information retrieval and in contrast to vector quantization;i.e. fixed square-block representations and minimum average distortion criteria. We implemented four image retrieval systems for the comparative study;three, called IPSILON image retrieval systems, use parsed representation with different perceptual distortion thresholds and one uses the convectional vector quantization for visual pattern analysis. We observe that different perceptual distortion in visual pattern matching does not have serious effects on the retrieval precision although allowing looser perceptual thresholds in image compression result poor reconstruction fidelity. The miniature SAR-system MiSAR has been developed by EADS Germany for lightweight UAVs like the LUNA-System. MiSAR adds to these tactical UAV-systems the all-weather reconnaissance capability, which is missing until now. Unlike other SAR sensors, that produce large strip maps at update rates of several seconds, MiSAR generates sequences of SAR images with approximately 1 Hz frame rate. photo interpreters (PI) of tactical drones, now mainly experienced with visual interpretation, are not used to SAR-images, especially not with SAR-image sequence characteristics. So they should be supported to improve their ability to carry out their task with a new, demanding sensor system. We have therefore analyzed and discussed with military PIs in which task MiSAR can be used and how the PIs can be supported by special algorithms. We developed image processing- and exploitation-algorithms for such SAR-image sequences. A main component is the generation of image sequence mosaics to get more oversight. This mosaicing has the advantage that also non straight /linear flight-paths and varying squint angles can be processed. Another component is a screening-component for man-made objects to mark regions of interest in the image sequences. We use a classification based approach, which can be easily adapted to new sensors and scenes. These algorithms are integrated into an image exploitation system to improve the image interpreters ability to get a better oversight, better orientation and helping them to detect relevant objects, especially considering long endurance reconnaissance missions.

A new technique to segment a handwritten document into distinct lines of text is presented. Line segmentation is the first and the most critical pre-processing step for a document recognition/analysis task. The proposed algorithm starts, by obtaining an initial set of candidate lines from the piece-wise projection profile of the document. The lines traverse around any obstructing handwritten connected component by associating it to the line above or below. A decision of associating such a component is made by (i) modeling the lines as bivariate Gaussian densities and evaluating the probability of the component under each Gaussian or (ii) the probability obtained from a distance metric. The proposed method is robust to handle skewed documents and those with lines running into each other. Experimental results show that on 720 documents (which includes English,Arabic and children's handwriting) containing a total of 11, 581 lines, 97.31 % of the lines were segmented correctly. On an experiment over 200 handwritten images with 78, 902 connected components, 98.81 % of them were associated to the correct lines.

Three-dimensional television (3D-TV) will become the next big step in the development of advanced TV systems. One of the major challenges for the deployment of 3D-TV systems is the diversity of display technologies and the high cost of capturing multi-view content. Depth image-based rendering (DIBR) has been identified as a key technology for the generation of new views for stereoscopic and multi-view displays from a small number of views captured and transmitted. We propose a disparity compensation method for DIBR that does not require spatial interpolation of the disparity map. We use a forward-mapping disparity compensation with real precision. The proposed method deals with the irregularly sampled image resulting from this disparity compensation process by applying a re-sampling algorithm based on a bi-cubic spline function space that produces smooth images. The fact that no approximation is made on the position of the samples implies that geometrical distortions in the final images due to approximations in sample positions are minimized. We also paid attention to the occlusion problem. Our algorithm detects the occluded regions in the newly generated images and uses simple depth-aware inpainting techniques to fill the gaps created by newly exposed areas. We tested the proposed method in the context of generation of views needed for viewing on SynthaGram (TM) auto-stereoscopic displays. We used as input either a 2D image plus a depth map or a stereoscopic pair with the associated disparity map. Our results show that this technique provides high quality images to be viewed on different display technologies such as stereoscopic viewing with shutter glasses (two views) and lenticular auto-stereoscopic displays (nine views).

In image and video analysis, distance maps are frequently used. They provide the (Euclidean) distance (ED) of background pixels to the nearest object pixel. Recently, the Fast Exact Euclidean Distance (FEED) transformation was launched. In this paper, we present the three dimensional (3D) version of FEED. 3D-FEED is compared with four other methods for a wide range of 3D test images. 3D-FEED proved to be twice as fast as the fastest algorithm available. Moreover, it provides true exact EDs, where other algorithms only approximate the ED. This unique algorithm makes the difference, especially there where time and precision are of importance.

The shapes of many natural and man-made objects have planar and curvilinear surfaces. The images of such curves usually do not have sufficient distinctive features to apply conventional feature-based reconstruction algorithms. In this paper, we describe a method of reconstruction of a quadratic curve in 3-D space as an intersection of two cones containing the respective projected curve images. The correspondence between this pair of projections of the curve is assumed to be established in this work. Using least-square curve fitting, the parameters of a curve in 2-D space are found. From this we are reconstructing the 3-D quadratic curve. Relevant mathematical formulations and analytical solutions for obtaining the equation of reconstructed curve are given. The result of the described reconstruction methodology are studied by simulation studies. This reconstruction methodology is applicable to LBW decision in cricket. path of the missile. Robotic Vision, path planning etc.
