Along with the rapid development of stereoscopic cinematography in the last few years, efficient 3D video diagnostic tools are increasingly in demand. The tools dedicated for real-time video analysis and assessment directly on the movie set are aimed at facilitation, acceleration and cost-cutting of movie production. It causes the growing interest in development of high-performance and reliable algorithms for stereoscopic video processing. One of the algorithms strictly related to 3D video processing is image rectification. It is aimed at transformation of the stereopair images in such a way that epipolar lines are horizontal and match up between views. The rectification is often a required preprocessing step for depth estimation algorithms because it simplifies searching for matching points in stereo images. The paper presents an overview and comparison of image rectification methods for the application in real-time diagnostic tools for stereoscopic cinematography. It also describes the implementation and evaluation of the rectification algorithm based on [1] that has been finally selected for the needs of diagnostic tool for stereo rig calibration and disparity map estimation developed by the authors. Described algorithm ensures very accurate image alignment and minimization of vertical disparity for the needs of disparity map calculation. Moreover, it is resistant to lens distortions in input image and does not introduce significant distortions in output image preserving the original viewpoint of the cameras.

In this paper the performances (in terms of accuracy) of an hybrid positioning technique, that brings together an image based recognition approach and MEMS (Micro Electro-Mechanical systems) technology, will be investigated. The image recognition based (IRB) positioning has already been well investigated in the past and represents a good technology for navigation in GNSS denied environment, like indoor or urban canyon, where GNSS accuracy is poor (tens of meters accuracy). However, for practical exploitation of IRB positioning with smartphones the following main problems must be taken into account. The first one is the optimization of the battery, that implies a proper use of the frame rate. A second main issue is represented by latencies due to image processing algorithms and visual search solutions that may require a cloud architecture to manage the size of the database. To overcome the above problems in IRB, reduction of the frame rate and latencies compensation, inertial platform built with MEMS technology may be exploited. Two different approaches are taken into account for IRB positioning: the first one is represented by a real-time solution obtainable through single images;the second one is achieved from a commercial software that locates all the frames (not suitable for real time applications). The paper presents a methodology that fuses IRB with MEMS measurements. Results have shown that with single IRB fixes fused together with inertial navigation the standard errors with the 9 5th percentile are about 1.66 m, 2.36 m and 3.16 m if the interval between two IRB localizations are 1, 2 and 5 sec respectively, while these errors decrease up to 0.64 m, 1.79 m and 2.05 m if the commercial hybrid absolute and relative orientation solution is considered. The optic nerve head (ONH) of the retina is a very important landmark of the fundus and is altered in optic nerve pathology especially glaucoma. Numerous imaging systems are available to capture the retinal fundus and from which some structural parameters can be inferred the retinal fundus camera is one of the most important tools used for this purpose. Currently, the ONH structure examination of the fundus images is conducted by the professionals only by observation. It should be noted that there is a shortage of highly trained professional worldwide. Therefore a reliable and efficient optic disc and cup localization and segmentation algorithms are important for automatic eye disease screening and also for monitoring the progression/remission of the disease Thus in order to develop a system, a retinal fundus image dataset is necessary to train and test the new software systems. The methods for diagnosing glaucoma are reviewed in the first chapter. Various datasets of retinal fundus images that are publically available currently are described and discussed. In the second chapter the techniques for the optic disc and cup segmentations available in the literature is reviewed. While in the third chapter a unique retinal fundus image dataset, called RIGA (retinal images for glaucoma analysis) is presented. In the dataset, the optic disc and cup boundaries are annotated manually by 6 ophthalmologists (glaucoma professionals) independently for total of 4500 images in order to obtain a comprehensive view point as well as to see the variation and agreement between these professionals. Based upon these evaluations, some of the images were filtered based on a statistical analysis in order to increase the reliability. The new optic disc and cup segmentation methodologies are discussed in the fourth chapter. The process starts with a preprocessing step based on a reliable and precise algorithm. Many steganographic algorithms have been proposed until these days. They all try to hide information by relying on some of well-known techniques. However, each of these techniques has its advantages and also its drawbacks. In this paper, we have investigated a possibility of using tool known as Mojette Transform for modifying and scrambling a binary image containing secret information. The image after these processes should resemble noisy picture. Modified image is then embedded into the least significant bit plane of cover image. The used techniques should result in better values of parameters as MSE, or PSNR in comparison with performance of the classical Least Significant Bit steganography.

Phase segmentation of X-ray computer tomography rock images using machine learning techniques: an accuracy and performance study

Performance and accuracy of machine learning techniques to segment rock grains, matrix and pore voxels from a 3-D volume of X-ray tomographic (XCT) grayscale rock images was evaluated. The segmentation and classification capability of unsupervised (k-means, fuzzy c-means, self-organized maps), supervised (artificial neural networks, least-squares support vector machines) and ensemble classifiers (bragging and boosting) were tested using XCT images of andesite volcanic rock, Berea sandstone, Rotliegend sandstone and a synthetic sample. The averaged porosity obtained for andesite (15.8 +/- 2.5 %), Berea sandstone (16.3 +/- 2.6 %), Rotliegend sandstone (13.4 +/- 7.4 %) and the synthetic sample (48.3 +/- 13.3 %) is in very good agreement with the respective laboratory measurement data and varies by a factor of 0.2. The k -means algorithm is the fastest of all machine learning algorithms, whereas a least-squares support vector machine is the most computationally expensive. Metrics entropy, purity, mean square root error, receiver operational characteristic curve and 10 K-fold cross-validation were used to determine the accuracy of unsupervised, supervised and ensemble classifier techniques. In general, the accuracy was found to be largely affected by the feature vector selection scheme. As it is always a trade-off between performance and accuracy, it is difficult to isolate one particular machine learning algorithm which is best suited for the complex phase segmentation problem. Therefore, our investigation provides pa-rameters that can help in selecting the appropriate machine learning techniques for phase segmentation.

This work proposes a textual and graphical domain-specific language (DSL) designed especially for modeling and writing data and image processing algorithms. Since reusing algorithms and other functionality leads to higher program quality and mostly shorter development time, this approach introduces a novel component-based language design. Special diagrams and structures, such as components, component-diagrams and component-instance-diagrams are introduced. The new language constructs allow an abstract and object-oriented description of data and image processing tasks. Additionally, a compatible graphical design interface is proposed, giving modelers and architects the opportunity to decide which kind of modeling they prefer (graphical or textual, including round-trip engineering).

A novel high- speed image super-resolution algorithm based on sparse representation for MEMS defect detection is proposed in this paper. Traditional super-resolution algorithms adopt a single dictionary to represent images, which cannot differentiate varieties of image blocks and leads to slow processing speed. Aiming at overcoming this shortage of traditional super-resolution algorithms, image blocks are divided into different categories by local features and each of these categories possesses the corresponding high and low resolution dictionary pairs. Experimental results of different MEMS defects show that the improved algorithm can obtain images of little lower quality with much less processing time, indicating that the proposed algorithm is more suitable for MEMS defect detection.

Mutual information (MI) is a very important concept in medical image registration for a diagnosis. During the past decade, there have been a large number of studies on multimodal image registration. This extensive attention is due to its high performance in terms of accuracy and robustness. However, there are so many different perspectives on MI that have been discussed and proposed during the last two decades. As a result, it is very difficult to have a holistic view of the field and to select an appropriate method to solve a specific problem in medical image analysis. In order to solve this problem, this paper proposes a novel taxonomy of MI approaches used in medical image registration. In our work, we extensively and comprehensively investigate works proposed in the literature and systematically classify them based on methods of computational processing. Our taxonomy will help to enhance an understanding of various principles of mutual information.

Most of current clustering methods are designed for general purpose other than a specific color pixel classification use. Color Line model representation emerged as the ultimate method for clustering pixels using RGB color components. However, this method is strongly sensitive to the adjustment of input parameters, which cannot conform to the frequent change of image structures and compositions. In this paper, we address this problem by introducing a hemisphere-grid based method for RGB pixel classification. Our method minimizes the reliance on user provided parameters as well as it can dynamically estimate the proper number of clusters. The properly clustering results prove the robustness and advantages of our method in classifying color pixels for unfamiliar input images.

Automated vehicles will carry computing and communication platforms, and will have enhanced sensing capabilities. Safety around people along with obstacle detection and avoidance systems are key to their success. In controlled environments, automated vehicles can benefit from a remote processing approach to reduce cost and accelerate deployment on larger scales. In this paper we present a section of our intelligent transport systems testbed which evaluates the remote image processing approach with a novel heterogeneous wireless communication system. Hardware implementation is carried out for an experimental evaluation and comparison with the simulation results.
