Mutual information (MI) is a very important concept in medical image registration for a diagnosis. During the past decade, there have been a large number of studies on multimodal image registration. This extensive attention is due to its high performance in terms of accuracy and robustness. However, there are so many different perspectives on MI that have been discussed and proposed during the last two decades. As a result, it is very difficult to have a holistic view of the field and to select an appropriate method to solve a specific problem in medical image analysis. In order to solve this problem, this paper proposes a novel taxonomy of MI approaches used in medical image registration. In our work, we extensively and comprehensively investigate works proposed in the literature and systematically classify them based on methods of computational processing. Our taxonomy will help to enhance an understanding of various principles of mutual information.

Most of current clustering methods are designed for general purpose other than a specific color pixel classification use. Color Line model representation emerged as the ultimate method for clustering pixels using RGB color components. However, this method is strongly sensitive to the adjustment of input parameters, which cannot conform to the frequent change of image structures and compositions. In this paper, we address this problem by introducing a hemisphere-grid based method for RGB pixel classification. Our method minimizes the reliance on user provided parameters as well as it can dynamically estimate the proper number of clusters. The properly clustering results prove the robustness and advantages of our method in classifying color pixels for unfamiliar input images.

Automated vehicles will carry computing and communication platforms, and will have enhanced sensing capabilities. Safety around people along with obstacle detection and avoidance systems are key to their success. In controlled environments, automated vehicles can benefit from a remote processing approach to reduce cost and accelerate deployment on larger scales. In this paper we present a section of our intelligent transport systems testbed which evaluates the remote image processing approach with a novel heterogeneous wireless communication system. Hardware implementation is carried out for an experimental evaluation and comparison with the simulation results.

In recent years the growth in quantity, diversity and capability of Earth Observation (EO) satellites, has enabled increase's in the achievable payload data dimensionality and volume. However, the lack of equivalent advancement in downlink technology has resulted in the development of an onboard data bottleneck. This bottleneck must be alleviated in order for EO satellites to continue to efficiently provide high quality and increasing quantities of payload data. This research explores the selection and implementation of state-of-the-art multidimensional image compression algorithms and proposes a new onboard data processing architecture, to help alleviate the bottleneck and increase the data throughput of the platform. The proposed new system is based upon a backplane architecture to provide scalability with different satellite platform sizes and varying mission's objectives. The heterogeneous nature of the architecture allows benefits of both Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) and Graphical processing Unit (GPU) hardware to be leveraged for maximised data processing throughput.

Iterative shrinkage smoothing algorithm can perform image smoothing with eliminating fine details and preserving principal edges in an image. However, real time processing is difficult due to large processing time when input image size is large. By utilizing downscaled image of an input image, the processing time can be dramatically reduced. In this case, however, the information of preserved principal edges is not accurate. Considering the applications utilizing such edge preserving smoothing algorithms, such as image tone mapping and detail enhancement, inaccurate principal edge information degrades the quality of resulted images. In this paper, we focus on tone mapping in the applications and propose processing time reduction method of tone mapping based on iterative shrinkage smoothing by utilizing parallel processing. Experimental results show that the proposed method improves the frame rates to 16 and 10 times for VGA and full HD resolutions, respectively, compared to single process implementation.

Robust image saliency detection can process the image correctly without any prior knowledge and additional assumptions. Therefore, the saliency detection is still one of the important steps in the field of computer vision including object recognition and tracking, image and video encoding and image segmentation. Although infrared imaging has extensive applications, there is few saliency extraction algorithms based on infrared spectroscopy. We propose an infrared image-based saliency extraction algorithm based on human vision and information theory. The proposed algorithm uses both human visual attention mechanism and theory of information, and it can also produce a saliency image with full resolution. The detection results of the proposed algorithm get a higher accuracy and better recall rate, when tested on one of the largest infrared data sets which is publicly now and a data set created by ourselves.

Near duplicate image detection needs the matching of a bit altered images to the original image. This will help in the detection of forged images. A great deal of effort has been dedicated to visual applications that need efficient image similarity metrics and signature. Digital images can be easily edited and manipulated owing to the great functionality of image processing software. This leads to the challenge of matching somewhat altered images to their originals, which is termed as near duplicate image detection. This paper discusses the literature reviewed on the development of several image matching algorithms. This paper encompasses 2 sections. Section 1 is the introduction. Section 2 discusses the literature reviewed on the development of image matching algorithms.

In this paper, a novel approach for night image enhancement is proposed. The algorithm improves the visuality of the night image by adjusting the background data of the value component (V) in HSV space. We firstly obtain background image from V, then increase the dynamic range of the background image by optimized transfer function. Finally, we can restore the enhancement V from enhanced background image. The experimental results demonstrate that the proposed approach can improve the perceptual quality, and have a good effect for night image by comparing with other algorithms.

In modern aerial Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance operations, precise 3D information becomes inevitable for increased situation awareness. In particular, object geometries represented by texturized digital surface models constitute an alternative to a pure evaluation of radiometric measurements. Besides the 3D data's level of detail aspect, its availability is time-relevant in order to make quick decisions. Expanding the concept of our preceding remote sensing platform developed together with OHB System AG and Geosystems GmbH, in this paper we present an airborne multi-sensor system based on a motor glider equipped with two wing pods;one carries the sensors, whereas the second pod downlinks sensor data to a connected ground control station by using the Aerial Reconnaissance Data System of OHB. An uplink is created to receive remote commands from the manned mobile ground control station, which on its part processes and evaluates incoming sensor data. The system allows the integration of efficient image processing and machine learning algorithms. In this work, we introduce a near real-time approach for the acquisition of a texturized 3D data model with the help of an airborne laser scanner and four high-resolution multi-spectral (RGB, near-infrared) cameras. image sequences from nadir and off-nadir cameras permit to generate dense point clouds and to texturize also facades of buildings. The ground control station distributes processed 3D data over a linked geoinformation system with web capabilities to off-site decision-makers. As the accurate acquisition of sensor data requires boresight calibrated sensors, we additionally examine the first steps of a camera calibration workflow.

image segmentation is important part of image processing applications. A given image is separated the different regions with homogeneous characteristics at image segmentation process. This paper will introduce an image segmentation approach that can be used in image processing applications. Recently Neutrosophic Set (NS) that use to evulate indeterminacy information, and metaheuristic algorithms are frequently used in image segmentation process. Our study contain both these methods. At first, an image is transformed to NS domain that has T, I, F subset, and then, features of image are extracted. Then, according to Shannon entopy model, threshold values that correspond to the values maximizing the function in the entropy, is found on the image. Finally, image is thresholded with this value. This search of maximum entropy values is made using the Cricket Algorithm, a new metaheuristic algorithm inspired behaviour of cricket, minimizing the complexity of operation and search time. To summarize, this study aims not only to represent image segmentation technique but also introduce the Cricket Algorithm. At the end of study, the performance of this approach on test images will be shown.
