Fast single image dehazing has been a challenging problem in many fields, such as computer vision and real-time applications. The existing image dehazing algorithms cannot achieve a trade-off between the dehazing performance and the computational complexity. The proposed approach first applies the mean filter twice to estimate airlight, which include pixel-based dark channel and bright channel constraints. And then the relationship between channel values of the restored image and atmospheric light is qualitatively analyzed to give the optimum estimate of atmospheric light. Using the airlight and atmospheric light, we can easily restore the scene radiance via the atmospheric scattering model. Compared with others, the main advantage of the proposed approach is its high speed and significant visibility improvement even in the sky and white areas. This speed allows the enhanced haze image to be applied in real-time processing applications. A comparative study and quantitative evaluation are proposed with a few other state of the art algorithms which demonstrates that similar or better quality results are obtained.

Digital image processing is an exciting area of research with a variety of applications including medical, surveillance security systems, defence, and space applications. Noise removal as a preprocessing step helps to improve the performance of the signal processing algorithms, thereby enhancing image quality. Anisotropic diffusion filtering proposed by Perona and Malik can be used as an edge-preserving smoother, removing high-frequency components of images without blurring their edges. In this paper, we present the FPGA implementation of an edge-preserving anisotropic diffusion filter for digital images. The designed architecture completely replaced the convolution operation and implemented the same using simple arithmetic subtraction of the neighboring intensities within a kernel, preceded by multiple operations in parallel within the kernel. To improve the image reconstruction quality, the diffusion coefficient parameter, responsible for controlling the filtering process, has been properly analyzed. Its signal behavior has been studied by subsequently scaling and differentiating the signal. The hardware implementation of the proposed design shows better performance in terms of reconstruction quality and accelerated performance with respect to its software implementation. It also reduces computation, power consumption, and resource utilization with respect to other related works.

Ultrafast ultrasound (US) imaging based on plane wave (PW) insonification is a widely used modality nowadays. Two main types of approaches have been proposed for image reconstruction either based on classical delay-and-sum (DAS) or on Fourier reconstruction. Using a single PW, these methods lead to a lower image quality than DAS with multi-focused beams. In this paper we review recent beamforming approaches based on sparse regularization methods. The imaging problem, either spatial-based (DAS) or Fourier-based, is formulated as a linear inverse problem and convex optimization algorithms coupled with sparsity priors are used to solve the ill-posed problem. We describe two applications of the framework namely the sparse inversion of the beamforming problem and the compressed beamforming in which the framework is combined with compressed sensing. Based on numerical simulations and experimental studies, we show the advantage of the proposed methods in terms of image quality compared to classical methods.

A Novel Framework for Interactive Visualization and Analysis of Hyperspectral image Data

Multispectral and hyperspectral images are well established in various fields of application like remote sensing, astronomy, and microscopic spectroscopy. In recent years, the availability of new sensor designs, more powerful processors, and high-capacity storage further opened this imaging modality to a wider array of applications like medical diagnosis, agriculture, and cultural heritage. This necessitates new tools that allow general analysis of the image data and are intuitive to users who are new to hyperspectral imaging. We introduce a novel framework that bundles new interactive visualization techniques with powerful algorithms and is accessible through an efficient and intuitive graphical user interface. We visualize the spectral distribution of an image via parallel coordinates with a strong link to traditional visualization techniques, enabling new paradigms in hyperspectral image analysis that focus on interactive raw data exploration. We combine novel methods for supervised segmentation, global clustering, and nonlinear false-color coding to assist in the visual inspection. Our framework coined Gerbil is open source and highly modular, building on established methods and being easily extensible for application-specific needs. It satisfies the need for a general, consistent software framework that tightly integrates analysis algorithms with an intuitive, modern interface to the raw image data and algorithmic results. Gerbil finds its worldwide use in academia and industry alike with several thousand downloads originating from 45 countries.

Retinal pathologies that are detected too late and/or left untreated can seriously damage eyesight. It is important to monitor the retina and react to any pathological changes. A fast, accurate, non-invasive, and even three-dimensional retina examination is the optical coherence tomography (OCT). In this paper we propose a new automated classification method for evaluation of vitreomacular interface (VRI) in human eyes. We present an approach for modelling changes in retina structure during the progression of vitreomacular traction (VMT) pathology. Presented experiments were performed on volumetric data acquired from adult patients with the use of Avanti RTvue device. Advanced digital image processing algorithms were subsequently applied to each OCT cross-section (B-scan) for image denoising and flattening, as well as retina layers segmentation. The proposed solution has a good accuracy and almost all subjects were successfully classified into one of 4 groups corresponding to various stages of VMT. The developed models of VMT stages show a high potential of the proposed method to support ophthalmologists in making appropriate clinical decisions.

Traditionally CCTV security and surveillance systems are meant for deterrent rather than for prevention where these systems will simply record scenes as viewed by video cameras regardless whether there is any activity or not. In the event of some criminal prosecution procedures, these recorded videos may be served as evidence in the court of law. The 9/11 incident has changed the way on how these video-based surveillance systems are being employed. More automated functions and “smart” algorithms have been incorporated into such systems so that these systems can detect moving object, identify to some degree what the object is and possibly tracking its movement. However, the problems of object identification, recognition, and tracking are far from being solved. The London bombing and the recently Boston bombing are proof that automatic system failed to identify the suspect. In fact, it took hundreds of man hours for the authority to finally identify the criminals. In this talk we will look at emerging smart vide-based surveillance systems. The talk will not focus on any particular model, or system or algorithms. Instead, the talk will concentrate on what are the opportunities and challenges faced by the existing systems. In particular, we will be exploring these from the perspective of image processing. Thus the talk will serve two purposes. Firstly, it will give a brief overview on what smart video-based surveillance is and secondly, it will present the focus areas for research activities by highlighting the challenges. To be specific, these areas of interest that will be covered by this talk will be on Face Recognition, Activity Recognition, Plate Recognition, Object Abandon/Stolen Recognition, and Crowd Detection. It is hoped that this talk will motivate and inspire many other young researches particularly from the ASEAN region to take more serious effort in this exciting field.

In the field of computational fluid dynamics, the Navier-Stokes equations are often solved using an unstructured-grid approach to accommodate geometric complexity. Implicit solution methodologies for such spatial discretizations generally require frequent solution of large tightly-coupled systems of block-sparse linear equations. The multicolor point-implicit solver used in the current work typically requires a significant fraction of the overall application run time. In this work, an efficient implementation of the solver for graphics processing units is proposed. Several factors present unique challenges to achieving an efficient implementation in this environment. These include the variable amount of parallelism available in different kernel calls, indirect memory access patterns, low arithmetic intensity, and the requirement to support variable block sizes. In this work, the solver is reformulated to use standard sparse and dense Basic Linear Algebra Subprograms (BLAS) functions. However, experiments show that the performance of the BLAS functions available in existing CUDA libraries is suboptimal for matrices representative of those encountered in actual simulations. Instead, optimized versions of these functions are developed. Depending on block size, the new implementations show performance gains of up to 7× over the existing CUDA library functions.

A distributed real-time processing framework is used to implement a generic processor for linear and non-linear tracks. The focus is on the implementation of direct back-projection (DBP) and fast factorized back-projection (FFBP) algorithms in the framework. The software is described in detail on how it is tailored to achieve a real-time computation of a SAR image using multiprocessors, multicore CPUs and GPUs. Results are validated with airborne SAR data acquired by the DLR's F-SAR sensor.

Canny algorithm is one of the most popular edge detection algorithms which are used to extract edge features in images. But because of its complicated calculation, using Canny algorithm to detect edges in real-time on traditional embedded systems becomes a difficult problem. However, current high-end embedded processors which integrate GPGPUs (General Purpose Graphics processing Units) can provide more computing power for embedded systems. This paper proposed a parallel Canny algorithm on the embedded CPU and GPU heterogeneous and collaborative computing system. Experimental results showed that the proposed parallel Canny algorithm brought nearly 50 times speedup on the heterogeneous embedded systems and it fully met the needs of real-time.

This live demonstration presents a new screen piracy protection technology by using “saturation laser attack” and temporal psychovisual modulation(TPVM). “Saturation laser attack” is using lasers to emit beams of colored light into the camera, so that the camera is saturated and instantly blind. TPVM is a new information display technology using the interplay of signal processing, optoelectronics and psychophysics and provides a solution for information security. Using the TPVM technique, we are able to show the disguise information on the screen while authorized viewers can truly see the secret information. An automatic target recognition algorithm is used to locate the position of the target mobile phone, then the device sends out lasers to the target phone to defeat unauthorized recording screens. By combining laser attack and TPVM, the whole system can prevent disclosure of confidential and personal information through unauthorized recording screens effectively.
