Development of multimedia systems that can be targeted to different platforms is challenging due to the need for rigorous integration between high-level abstract modeling, and low-level synthesis and optimization. In this paper, a new dataflow-based design tool called the targeted dataflow interchange format is introduced for retargetable design, analysis, and implementation of embedded software for multimedia systems. Our approach provides novel capabilities, based on principles of task-level dataflow analysis, for exploring and optimizing interactions across design components;object-oriented data structures for encapsulating contextual information for components;a novel model for representing parameterized schedules that are derived from repetitive graph structures;and automated code generation for programming interfaces and low-level customizations that are geared toward high-performance embedded-processing architectures. We demonstrate our design tool for cross-platform application design, parameterized schedule representation, and associated dataflow graph-code generation using a case study centered around an image registration application.

The development of the security layers between the wireless terminals is one of the biggest trends in wireless communications. Bluetooth can be described as the short range and the low power supplements that holds the connection protocol through various devices. This paper presents the development of a secure wireless connection terminals on a field programmable gate array (FPGA). The wireless connection has been established using Bluetooth technology and the initialisation of a secure algorithm for data exchange is implemented using the advanced encryption standards (AES). The proposed system has been validated and demonstrated using using an imageprocessing application which involves the encryption and decryption of acquired images from the RC10 FPGA prototyping board's camera. The evaluation of different building block has been carried out in terms of area, resources used and power consumption.

This paper proposes an automatic design flow from user-friendly design to efficient implementation of video processingsystems. This design flow starts with the use of coarse-grain dataflow representations based on the CAL language, which is a complete language for dataflow programming of embedded systems. Our approach integrates previously developed techniques for detecting synchronous dataflow (SDF) regions within larger CAL networks, and exploiting the static structure of such regions using analysis tools in The Dataflow interchange format Package (TDP). Using a new XML format that we have developed to exchange dataflow information between different dataflow tools, we explore systematic implementation of signal processingsystems using CAL, SDF-like region detection, TDP-based static scheduling, and CAL-to-C (CAL2C) translation. Our approach, which is a novel integration of three complementary dataflow tools - the CAL parser, TDP, and CAL2C - is demonstrated on an MPEG Reconfigurable Video Coding (RVC) decoder.

This document pertains to the field of health informatics. Within that field it addresses the exchange of digital images, and information related to the production and management of those images, between both medical imaging equipment and systems concerned with the management and communication of that information. This document is intended to facilitate interoperability of medical imaging equipment by specifying: -A set of protocols to be followed by devices claiming conformance to the standard. -The syntax and semantics of commands and associated information data models that ensure effective communication between implementations of the standard. -Information that must be supplied with an implementation for which conformance to the standard is claimed. This document does not specify: -The implementation details of any features of the standard on a device for which conformance is claimed. -The overall set of features and functions to be expected from a system implemented by integrating a group of devices each claiming conformance to the standard. -A testing/validation procedure to assess an implementation's conformance to the standard. Within health informatics, both medical imaging equipment and systems concerned with the management and communication of medical image data may require to interoperate with other systems in other areas of health informatics; these other areas and systems are, however, outside the scope of this document.

This paper describes a generic software platform which can be used for simulation, prototyping and implementation of real time data fusion systems and for training of data fusion engineers. This platform is based on the definition of a set of asynchronous "data processing nodes" cooperating by interchange "lists of data". Those data processing nodes and the data they process are generic, being the data fusion engineer the responsible for implementing the actual data fusion algorithms and defining the interest pieces of data to be interchanged. This architecture has been successfully used for several real projects, such as a simulator of multiradar multitarget tracking systems, the optimization of monoradar filters, an image based tracking system, and a generic real time data fusion system for Airport surface surveillance. In the paper both the overall architecture and some of these examples are described.

A major contribution to improving interoperability of medical imaging systems is made by DICOM. This standard focuses on tasks related to the creation of the results of medical imaging procedures and supports facilities corresponding to those available to the recipient of a photographic negative, i.e. some possibility of post processing. End users increasingly expect to have access to medical images but normally require only facilities corresponding to those of the recipient of a photographic print. There is currently no simple format that supports clinical needs and is generally accepted as appropriate for use by end user systems. In this paper we compare the requirements for end user medical image access with those supported by the Basic imageinterchange Format (BIIF) standard(1) (ISO/IEC 12087-5:1998(E)). This has been widely implemented and tested in the defense and remote sensing domains. It incorporates most of the required features for specifying the presentation of 2 dimensional healthcare images together with superimposed text and graphics annotation. It has flexible facilities for extensions to include clinically relevant descriptive data elements to be added. BIIF can support some aspects of security and safety that are not addressed by existing generic formats. It is concluded that significant benefits could be obtained by the implementation of medical digital image exchange using BIIF.
