The use of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV) has increased in the last decade, using these technologies for many different topics, such as infrastructure inspection or biodiversity monitoring. The main advantages of these systems are its reduced cost and its ability to navigate on hard-accessible areas, what makes it possible to acquire aerial data with a reduced cost. The new technological developments and the progress in the definition of the regulations applicable to these vehicles have allowed the first BVLOS (Beyond Visual Line of Sight) operations to begin to be carried out at a professional level, which has meant a great advance for the UAV sector. In this field, Telespazio Iberica SLU is leading a project called GEOSUB, which objective is the development of a UAV integral solution for biodiversity monitoring. The project has two main parts. The first one is the evolution and improvement of a fixed-wing and multicopter UAV, equipped with four different sensors: RGB camera, multispectral camera, thermographic camera, and a LiDAR sensor. The second part focused on the development of a geoinformation processing platform for both the mission planification and monitoring, and the data processing to obtain the final product. This work presents the preliminary results of the project and goes in depth with the developments made.

For robots to perform advanced manipulation of objects, touch is a critical source of information, and a high-quality tactile sensor is essential. Image-based optical tactile sensors, and its inheritances, which have soft touch interfaces, can provide high-resolution tactile images of the contact geometry, contact pressure, and slip conditions. However, due to the lack of robustness provided by the current tactile sensors, the ability to grasp hard or sharp objects is minimal. In this work, we propose an image-based optical tactile sensor and overcome the above limitation of poor robustness by introducing a latex layer on the touch interface. We use a combination of silicone elastomer covered with a latex material and an acrylic sheet to support the silicone elastomer. A camera placed at the bottom of the sensor housing captures the deformation of the elastomer surface illuminated by an inner light. To evaluate the performance, we carried out a series of experiments. First, we evaluated the mechanical characteristics of the silicone elastomer with three types of coating, namely latex membrane, metallic coating, and no coating. The proposed latex membrane clearly outperformed the other two in terms of robustness. Second, we carried out the force-displacement experiments quantitatively to further study the sensitivity and robustness. Last, we validated the sensor performance in terms of its spatial resolution by applying the VGG-19 neural network for classifying touch patterns captured by the sensor. Overall, the proposed sensor achieved the desired robustness, sensitivity, and spatial resolution performance.

A Hand Hygiene Tracking System With LoRaWAN Network for the Abolition of Hospital-Acquired Infections

In healthcare settings, hand hygiene is a crucial step in preventing the spread of disease. Healthcare-associated infections, such as community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) and hospital-acquired pneumonia (HAP), can be mitigated with the help of cutting-edge solutions and intelligent alcohol-based hand sanitizers. Specifically, this research presents a long-range (LoRa) network powered by the Internet of Things (IoT) that can detect, monitor and track hand hygiene habits to reduce the spread of hospital-acquired infections (HAIs). The wearable Bluetooth low energy (BLE) device used by hospital personnel and patients will monitor and track the hygiene activities using LoRa and alcohol-based sanitizers deployed in intensive care units (ICUs), elevators, inpatient rooms, and other hospital facilities. The alcohol dispenser is equipped with a Jetson Nano graphics processing unit (GPU) from NVIDIA, a hand sanitizer, and a door that opens once the user has washed their hands. Using a LoRa wide area network (LoRaWAN) and short-range BLE technology, hand hygiene information, with a user ID and GPS location, has it sent to a LoRa gateway and a cloud server. Various field tests in hospital settings and simulated environments are performed to effectively guarantee the clinical performance of the proposed IoT-enabled LoRa network. In conclusion, the total success percentage in real-world LoRa network conditions is 92.78%, whereas the success rate (SR) in laboratory testing is 98%.

The emergence of 5G networks in frequency bands close to those used by aviation radar altimeters introduces new interference challenges, necessitating innovative solutions for accurate altitude prediction. This paper introduces a novel approach using machine learning (ML) algorithms to predict aircraft altitude from down sweep signals of frequency-modulated continuous wave (FMCW) radar altimeters, focusing on overcoming 5G interference. It details the implementation of various ML models and the use of down sweep data, which provides unique signal characteristics advantageous for altitude estimation. The methodology involves collecting and processing real 5G signals, emulating radar altimeter operation under different interference levels to create a comprehensive dataset, and rigorously evaluating the ML models with statistical metrics to verify their accuracy in altitude prediction amidst 5G signals. The results show that this ML-based framework markedly enhances altitude estimation accuracy, offering a robust method for radar a ltimeter operation in the 5G era. This research advances flight safety by providing a solution for reliable altitude measurement despite potential 5G interference.

To solve the routing holes in wireless sensor networks caused by high energy consumption of cluster head nodes and shortage of spectrum, a dynamic clustering based method for wireless sensor network networking control is presented. In the early stage of cluster networking, the communication efficiency index is constructed by collecting the signal-to-noise ratio and energy consumption of wireless sensors (nodes), and the cluster head node and working frequency are selected. To avoid the routing holes caused by cluster head node death, periodically check the communication efficiency index of the nodes to dynamically adjust the cluster head node and working frequency. A smooth transition between old and new cluster head nodes is achieved by substituting nodes. This control method ensures that a wireless sensor with the best performance always has a stable communication with the external terminal as the cluster head node in the wireless sensor network, and improves the performance of the entire wireless sensor network. © 2023 IEEE.

The Aquasense project is a multi-site Innovative Training Network (ITN) in water and food quality monitoring using autonomous sensors and intelligent data gathering and analysis. This paper aims to study the most suitable communication system model regarding radio signal coverage and networking performance in this frame. This objective is achieved by evaluating the expected performance of three long-range communications technologies, 4G/LTE, NB-IoT, and LoRa, to support a wireless sensor network reporting data from the sensing devices to a remote central station where they are collected and analyzed. In order for the performance to be assessed, the WinProp software suite is adopted to reproduce the communications scenarios and estimate the network throughput. The results clearly show that LTE outperforms the other two technologies as it achieves the highest throughput but is limited in terms of coverage. On the other hand, the LoRa and NB-IoT technologies achieve outstanding connectivity for large areas far away from the base stations, making the NB-IoT the solution offering the most valuable trade-off between connectivity and throughput. © 2024 Elsevier B.V.. This paper designs a smart home system based on ZigBee wireless sensor network. The smart home system is mainly composed of four parts: environment perception, data network transmission, cloud database and user application. The system collects all kinds of environmental factors related to security, such as temperature, gas, smoke and so on, and detects illegal intrusion through infrared detection technology. A complete hardware data acquisition platform is constructed. The system can intuitively grasp the working state of various sensors on all nodes through the smart home gateway. The system can centrally control all kinds of electrical appliances and realize remote control through mobile phone terminals. The experimental simulation shows that ZigBee technology has the characteristics of low power consumption, scalability and high practicability when applied to low-speed domain network. © 2023 IEEE.

The ultimate goal of innovation should be to develop a system that is stable and beneficial for society. The emerging revolution from the past decade of multiple low-cost sensors aims to develop multifaceted Internet of things (IoT) devices for uncountable industrial and home usage. The proposed sys- tem revolutionizes container regulation and quality assessment in mega kitchens, addressing various scenarios effectively. It employs ultrasonic sensors to detect container status, ensuring contents are fully covered. Gas sensors and load cells continuously monitor contents, sending data to a MySQL database via a PHP API. Ultrasonic sensor data, determined by container height, alerts users if lids are open, preventing spoilage from atmospheric gasses. Load cell data, amplified by the HX711 module, alerts users when contents fall below set thresholds, reducing manual checks and enabling timely supply orders. The Gas sensor in the container monitors various gases at different ppm levels and implements preventive measures to avoid Food spoilage. Updates occur every 2 seconds, ensuring real-time monitoring. This innovative approach significantly enhances food storage practices, minimizing wastage and mitigating storage issues. By providing timely notifications, alerts, and temperature monitoring, it empowers kitchen managers to optimize efficiency and economy, revolutionizing pantry management in high-volume kitchens. This Research work promises a more sustainable and efficient approach to food storage, embodying the potential of IoT technology to address critical challenges in the culinary industry. © 2024 IEEE.

Despite the availability of various educational software products, there is a need to develop intelligent applications to enhance students' self-assessment. The purpose of the paper is to present a conceptual framework and its subsequent implementation by developing a set with web applications based on ML and AI techniques. Indoor localization by leveraging the existing residential instruments has been widely explored. Given the properties of temporal stability and spatial distinctness, the electromagnetic radiation (EMR) from the powerline network is a promising signal for location sensing. In this demo, we present a three-sensor setup to capture the powerline EMR signal from the three-dimensional (3D) space and formulate a new powerline EMR feature to implement the simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM). Compared with the single sensor setup, our proposed approach can improve the localization accuracy to decimeter level.
