The capabilities of tactical intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) payloads are expanding from single sensor imagers to integrated systems-of-systems architectures. Increasingly, these systems-of-systems include multiple sensing modalities that can act as force multipliers for the intelligence analyst. Currently, the separate sensing modalities operate largely independent of one another, providing a selection of operating modes but not an integrated intelligence product. We describe here a sensor Management System (SMS) designed to provide a small, compact processing unit capable of managing multiple collaborative sensor systems on-board an aircraft. Its purpose is to increase sensor cooperation and collaboration to achieve intelligent data collection and exploitation. The SMS architecture is designed to be largely sensor and data agnostic and provide flexible networked access for both data providers and data consumers. It supports pre-planned and ad-hoc missions, with provisions for on-demand tasking and updates from users connected via data links. Management of sensors and user agents takes place over standard network protocols such that any number and combination of sensors and user agents, either on the local network or connected via data link, can register with the SMS at any time during the mission. The SMS provides control over sensor data collection to handle logging and routing of data products to subscribing user agents. It also supports the addition of algorithmic data processing agents for feature/target extraction and provides for subsequent cueing from one sensor to another. The SMS architecture was designed to scale from a small UAV carrying a limited number of payloads to an aircraft carrying a large number of payloads. The SMS system is STANAG 4575 compliant as a removable memory module (RMM) and can act as a vehicle specific module (VSM) to provide STANAG 4586 compliance (level-3 interoperability) to a non-compliant sensor system. Shellfish farms need to be closed from harvesting when the water body is contaminated to avoid a serious health hazard. We have designed a sensor network framework to monitor a number of water quality variables to check the health of shellfish farms and predict closure if hazardous. Because of the uncertainty associated with the data acquisition process, a full set of sensor values are not always available for decision making purposes. The prediction system thus needs to deal with missing values. Statistical approaches are commonly used to generate an artificial value to approximate a missing sensor reading and predictions are made on the then complete set of sensor values. In this paper we present a new method that is capable of making predictions without making artificial approximations of missing values. The idea is to train a set of classifiers on different subsets of sensor values. Given a set of available sensor values, a prediction is made by the classifier trained on the corresponding set of sensor values. We have evaluated the system on the data obtained from a number of shellfish farms in Tasmania. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method to deal with missing values can predict closures with high accuracy.

The positioning of the sensors in the query-based Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) has an impact on its energy Efficiency. This work, presents two pre-defined sensor arrangements in order to measure the magnitude of this impact, concerning energy consumption, successful queries and round-trip time delay in each query on a single-sink WSN. Predefined positions developed for querying entity (singlesink) against variable event locations in a flat, and obstacle free rectangular field. The simulation results confirm that positioning strategy of the single sink node offers a significant Energy consumption performance gain with different response time. © 2013 IEEE.

The advantages of smartphones such as integrated sensors, programmability, scalability and cloud servers have enabled low-cost and efficient public safety applications. However, designing such applications has to face daunting challenges, for instance, short battery life, low computing capability and lacking memory. To this end, lighter, faster, more efficient and scalable distributed data processing algorithms are necessary. In particular, new mechanisms are necessary for adaptive and opportunistic sensing within a cluster of smartphones. Furthermore, a distributed data mining algorithm is in need of proposition to run on each smartphone for information retrieval. The retrieved information also needs a new algorithm to be fused and even enhanced by more powerful devices such as sensor nodes in the infrastructure to obtain higher accuracy and reliability. For experimental validation, the new algorithms will be implemented on smartphones to collect and detect abnormalities from measured environmental elements such as sounds, pressure, temperature, light, etc., under various public safety scenarios including ambient noise. Currently, I am working from the scratch on a new idea that using a few preferable sensors to trigger others' measurement for adaptive and opportunistic sensing. This saves considerable battery power and lessens interference with normal phone usage.

Aerial Wireless sensor networks (AWSNs) are being increasingly used in search and rescue operations for locating victims stranded in disaster areas. The primary objective of such missions is to locate the victims as quickly as possible. As such, determining the optimal flight path for UAVs is very important. In this paper, we solve the coverage problem while optimising the time to find victim when number of victims in the disaster area is unknown. Path planning problem in weighted terrain is NP-Complete problem. Next we propose a heuristic based on Partially Observable Markov Decision Processes (POMDP). Using POMDP in this problem makes sense for two reasons, first we have partial knowledge of terrain and secondly the way POMDP maximises the reward in its transition function is requirement of our problem. We conduct extensive simulations and demonstrate that our solution can reduce the time to find all victims by up to 150% as compared to the state-of-the-art. We also show that our solution achieves full coverage of disaster area as compared to partial coverage of other algorithms.

A key indicator for sustainable application development is reusability of components. Current research on application development aims to combine Services from the Web based on a description given by the developer. So, in many cases there should be no need to develop new applications from scratch. There is at least some sub-functionality provided somewhere which avoids the reinvention of the wheel. Such services may offer capabilities in terms of data-processing but also in terms of data-provisioning. In 2013 the number of smartphones in the world hit 1 bn units and is expected to hit 1.7 bn units in 2017(1). They are equipped with various sensors, e.g. GPS, acceleration, brightness, noise, etc.. This leads to an inconceivable amount of information that in most cases is yet only locally available. The focus of this paper is on global provisioning of such data. Whereas the pervasiveness of smartphones grows massively, the Semantic Web initiatives aim to describe the knowledge of the world in a structured way. This enables machines to semantically understand the meaning of message payload and thus communicate and learn without any need for human intervention. This paper depicts and evaluates a framework to integrate the information from virtually arbitrary datasources with the Internet. This approach was developed within the SPITFIRE2. project. Besides the network integration, it allows to abstract from low-level sensor values to virtual representations of physical things using proper aggregation on the semantic level.

Rows of trees such as in orchards, planted in straight parallel lines can provide navigation cues for autonomous machines that operate in between them. When the tree canopies are well managed, tree rows appear similar to corridor walls and a simple 2D sensing scheme suffices. However, when the tree canopies are three dimensional, or ground vegetation occludes tree trunks, it is necessary to use a three dimensional sensing mode. An additional complication in prolific canopies is that GPS is not reliable and hence is not suitable to register data from sensors onboard a traversing vehicle. Here, we present a method to register 3D data from a lidar sensor onboard a vehicle that must accurately determine its pose relative to the rows. We first register point cloud into a common reference frame and then determine the position of tree rows and trunks in the vicinity to determine the vehicle pose. Our method is tested online and with data from commercial orchards. Experimental results show that the accuracy is sufficient to enable accurate traversal between tree rows even when tree canopies do not approximate planar walls.

In this paper we present a self-organizing, singlehop clustering scheme, which is based on partitioning sensor networks into several disjoint cliques. Clustering sensor nodes into small groups is an effective method to achieve scalability, fault tolerance, load balancing, routing etc. Here, we develop and analyze maximal clique based cluster-first technique where each node obtains a list of its neighbours' connectivity as well as their degree of connection at first. Then, the node with highest degree of connection initiates clique formation process and makes the cluster. Among all the members of the cluster, the node with maximum energy is selected as cluster head (CH). The proposed technique has a number of advantages. For example, it requires only the knowledge of one-hop neighbours to form clusters. Furthermore, the clustering algorithm is robust for topological change caused by node failure, node mobility, CH change and even for node insertion or removal. Simulation results show that our proposed clustering scheme gives better performance in terms of cluster size, variance of cluster size, and number of single node clusters than the existing clustering algorithms such as Secure Distributed Clustering, LEACH and LCA.

As automation gains increasing popularity in supply chains and retail stores for processes such as inventory management, there is an increasing interest in automating processes in retailing environments to facilitate overall improved customer shopping experience. Advances in identification and communication technologies such as RFID (Radio Frequency IDentification), NFC (Near Field Communication) and smartphones as well as the ability to respond in real-time have opened up the possibility for seamless integration of these technologies. We consider automated check-out in a retail shopping environment with NFC-enabled smartphones. Specifically, we propose a framework for a transaction system that operates in such a retail environment and a set of protocols that enable mutual authentication between the customer and the store system.

In future Internet research, content centric networking (CCN) is a new promising approach. CCNx has been introduced recently as an open source protocol suite for CCN and implementation base for practical research. In wireless sensor networks (WSNs) research, data or content centric approaches like in-network processing and data aggregation are important. While the principle of CCN is a suitable approach in WSNs, the CCNx protocol suite designed for PCs is not applicable to resource-constrained WSNs. Therefore, we design, implement and evaluate a lightweight variant of a CCN protocol specifically for WSNs called CCN-WSN as a lightweight alternative to implementing IP for sensor networks. Key concepts of CCNx protocol are integrated but a variety of aspects are revised to meet the memory and computational constraints of sensor nodes and communication patterns in WSNs. E.g. the message format is simplified and some fields are omitted completely. Instead, we propose a flexible naming strategy which extends the functionality of content names to add small amount of data in interest messages. For performance evaluation a challenging time-synchronization application was implemented with CCN-WSN to demonstrate the flexibility of the approach and a comparison with a reference protocol for data dissemination called AutoCast is presented.
