Wireless sensor network nowadays has been applied to a wide range of applications. However, there are still some challenges to apply sensornetworks to practical applications, such as size constraint, cost constraint, and power constraint. All those constraints would become stricter in applying to Body sensor Network (BSN), which motivates scholars to develop more compact sensors with reasonable maintenance fees so as to carry by users or even embed into users' bodies. Under the constraints of size and cost, the battery size is strictly restricted accordingly. Thereupon power consumption becomes more and more essential to make BSN realistic. Therefore, we propose a novel architecture of BSN in this paper, which reduces the regular power consumption of BSN so that the device lifetime and network reliability can be significantly improved. The proposed architecture has following advantages: (1) it reduces redundant data transmissions without influencing the accuracy of the system. (2) By reducing unnecessary data transmissions and optimizing routing path, it simultaneously reduces the power consumption and prolongs the network lifetime. (3) It is feasible and highly applicable to many applications.

ASWP testbed, a long-term wireless sensor network (WSN) deployment for environmental monitoring, is presented. This testbed integrates 42 MICAz nodes that implement a periodic sampling application for external sensors exposed to a forested nature reserve at the Audubon Society of Western Pennsylvania (ASWP), USA. It has been running for the past two years using TinyOS-based platforms and the commercially available routing software XMesh. Network performance analysis indicates that the critical impact due to the outdoor environment and node physical failures significantly reduced the network yield when long-term periods were considered. In particular, it is found that an over-used routing path across the network was responsible for most of the packet retransmitted and dropped in ASWP. This preliminary work intends to provide a useful reference point for WSN research and development targeted towards outdoor WSNs for long-term deployments.

We consider the problem of finding the optimal time-periodic sensor schedule for field estimation in wireless sensornetworks. The sensors are subject to resource constraints in the form of a limit on the number of times each sensor can be activated over one period. A correspondence between active sensors and the nonzero columns of the estimator gain matrix is established. We formulate an optimization problem which seeks the optimal periodic estimator gain matrix that minimizes the error covariance over one period, subject to the sensor resource constraints. The optimization problem is combinatorial in nature, and we apply the alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM) to find its locally optimal solutions. Numerical results are provided to illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Effective use of intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) data gathered by unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) missions is vital to US Military operations. The 2006 Geospatial Intelligence (GEOINT) Basic Doctrine includes the following statements: (a) A primary purpose of geospatial products has always been to provide visualization of operational spaces and activity patterns of all sizes and scales, ranging from global and regional level to cities and even individual buildings. (b) A picture is simply the fastest way to communicate spatial information to a customer. Parallax Visualization (PV) technologies have been introduced, which: (1) use existing UAV sensor data, (2) provide critical alignment software tools, and (3) produce autostereoscopic (automatic depth perception) ISR work products. PV work products can be distributed across military networks and viewed on standard unaided displays. Previous evaluations have established that PV of ISR full motion video (FMV) data presents three-dimensional information in an obvious and immediate manner, thus literally adding a new dimension to the basic picture goal as set out by the GEOINT doctrine.(1)

The introduction of robotics technology within endovascular surgical procedures has realised accurate catheter navigation and reduced surgeon irradiation. Insufficient force information from the catheter remains a limitation for significant improvement in the performance of these procedures. While recent developments of catheter tip-force measurement sensors have witnessed a notable outcome, packaging complexities and sensor size constraints limit their application. This work presents an approach to catheter tip-force measurement during endovascular surgery simulation. Image processing and photoelasticity are utilized to measure arterial stress and morphological deformation in a carotid artery segment model. Deformation is measured in real-time and conveyed to the user as haptic feedback during tele-operation of a robotic catheter insertion system. A preliminary single user study was completed to realise the potential of force feedback as it is correlated to the level of deformation and stress in the artery model. The results of this haptic feedback are compared with experimental results of the same operator manually inserting the catheter, and also using a computer graphical-user-interface to control the catheter insertion system.

This paper presents a decentralized localization algorithm that makes use of radio-location fingerprinting and kernel methods. The proposed algorithm consists of dividing the network into several zones, each of which having a calculator capable of emitting, receiving and processing data. By using radio-information of its zone, each calculator constructs, by means of kernel methods, a model estimating the nodes positions. Calculators estimates are then combined together, leading to final position estimates. Compared to centralized methods, this technique is more robust, less energy consuming, with a lower processing complexity.
