Diabetes is a metabolic disease characterized by high blood sugar. Diabetes is prone to various complications that can seriously affect human health and even endanger lives. Currently, diabetes is tested in an invasive manner, which is prone to patient resistance and even leads to trauma infection. In response to the need for non-invasive testing, this thesis proposes a non-invasive sweat glucose detection system, which consists of a glucose colorimetric sensor, an industrial camera-based image acquisition system and a color recognition algorithm based on a MATLAB program. The effect of the sample volume of glucose solution on the experimental results was explored, and a linear detection range of 0-4.4 mg/dL was obtained. © 2023 SPIE.

In this paper, we propose a distributed-robust sound source localization (D-R-SSL) method in wireless acoustic sensor networks (WASNs). Specifically, the space is first divided into small equal-sized grids, and the local probability of each grid containing the source is calculated by using intra-node time difference of arrivals (TDoAs). Next, we allocate weights for local probabilities from different nodes, and develop a distributed weight calculation strategy which is robust against the TDoA outliers. Then, the source position is derived from the weighted summation of local probabilities. In order to improve the SSL efficiency, we further present a fast implementation approach (named as F-D-R-SSL). Finally, we also analyse the computational complexity and communication loads of the proposed methods. Simulation and real-world experiments demonstrate that the F-D-R-SSL is as powerful or even stronger than state-of-the-art non-grid SSLs.

Microwave sensors based on the chipless radio frequency identification (CRFID) technology are well-suited for wireless sensing systems. However, developing CRFID sensors with controllable modes and integrated multi-parameter integration remains a significant challenge. In this paper, we propose a novel reconfigurable four-port antenna-based sensor with multiparameter characteristics. By integrating multiple sensor arrays designed with special sensitive materials on the same plane, we achieve flexible channel reuse and sensing mode reconstruction. The sensor is completely passive and reusable, enabling longterm synchronous sensing and information transmission in critical areas where power supply is difficult to obtain.

Wireless sensor networks for structural health monitoring of infrastructure are now becoming an IoT. It provides the ability to collect and analyze survivability data in real-time to enable continuous structural health monitoring for buildings, bridges, and other critical infrastructure. The purpose of this abstract is to introduce Real-time Monitoring with Wireless sensor networks in IoT Infrastructure. Wireless sensor networks are used in structural health monitoring. They are typically composed of many distributed, cheap sensors embedded in the structure that communicate wirelessly to a central monitoring station. Those sensors, including temperature, strain and vibration, are critical in detecting potential structural problems. This data gets transmitted to a cloud for processing, which provides indications of an unusual characteristic or predictive failure. Compared to the traditional methods, there are several advantages of applying WSN for real-time structural health monitoring. Lead leads provide real-time updates on the condition of a bridge that allows for continuous monitoring, with advanced sensors pinpointed through its structure. It will assist in keeping the infrastructure safe and affordable by guaranteeing rapid time-to-resolution. In addition, WSNs have low implementation costs and do not interfere too much with the structure of large structures.

As smart cities evolve, they integrate various applications such as intelligent transportation systems, energy management, healthcare, and public safety, all of which depend on interconnected networks. These applications rely on massive data exchanges between sensors, devices, and cloud services, making the system more efficient but also exposing it to cybersecurity challenges. Cyber threats, including data breaches, denial of service (DoS) attacks, and malware, can disrupt essential services, compromise privacy, and endanger lives. The complexity of smart city infrastructure amplifies vulnerabilities, making real-time detection and localization of attacks a critical necessity. In this paper, we propose a novel framework for attack detection and localization specifically designed for smart city environments. The framework integrates machine learning-based intrusion detection systems (IDS) with packet analysis techniques. Upon detection of an anomaly, detailed packet analysis is performed to extract crucial information, such as IP addresses, GPS coordinates, and other metadata. This enables precise localization of the attack's source, facilitating rapid response and mitigation. The combination of machine learning for anomaly detection with packet-level analysis ensures a comprehensive approach, significantly improving detection accuracy and localization precision. Extensive evaluations on real-world datasets demonstrate the efficacy of the proposed method in enhancing the security of smart city networks, while reducing false positives and improving real-time response capabilities. This framework represents a critical advancement in protecting smart cities from evolving cyber threats.

The future wireless networks are expected to support a myriad of scenarios (such as smart city, intelligent manufacturing, and remote healthcare) by utilizing the pervasive Inter-net of Things (IoT) devices (e.g., sensors, cameras, cars, and drones). However, the data distribution and the computing resource among these heterogeneous IoT devices vary widely. It is therefore very challenging to directly implement existing (centralized or federated) machine learning paradigms in such heterogeneous IoT environments. To tackle this issue, we propose a semi-federated learning (SemiFL) paradigm, which integrates centralized learning (CL) and federated learning (FL) into a generalized framework. The SemiFL framework allows computation-limited devices to participate in the learning process by transmitting their local datasets to the base station for centralized model training. To analyze the learning performance of SemiFL in heterogeneous IoT networks, we derive a convergence upper bound by quantifying the effect of learning parameters and non-IID datasets. Simulation results demonstrate that our SemiFL achieves better learning performance than FL, while reducing the communication overhead compared to conventional CL.

In recent years, water pollution has become one of the major problems that countries around the world face. The needs for drinking water in a tourist city like Vlora, Albania have changed in the last twenty years both in terms of the size of the aqueduct and consumption of the population. Therefore, it is important to constantly monitor the quality of the water, to be able to intervene and combat water pollution. The present work proposes a monitoring network based on most important water parameter such as pH, Temperature and Dissolved Oxygen, which will be measured through a network of wireless sensors on the entire water network of the city. This testbed will consist in building a monitoring system that can be later used to monitor other parameters or even in other situations. The system proposed in this approach is a combination of different sensors, whose sole purpose will be the monitoring of the parameter in the water over different time intervals, a database and an expert system. All the information gathered from the sensors related to the Dissolved Oxygen in the water, will be stored in a database. This database will then serve as a focal point for the expert system. The expert system will consist of a knowledge base and an interface engine, which together will serve as a monitoring, diagnostic, signaling, scheduling and planning for specialized events. The knowledge base will function based on data from human experts related to water pollution, for the interference engine to be able to make decisions based on different findings and scenarios in the cases of deviations from the norm parameter. The experimental results gathered during the implementation of the project will serve as a model that in the future can help in other systems that can be used for monitoring the environment in an intelligent and sustainable way.

In order to keep the electric power system running smoothly and reliably, it is constantly monitored and controlled by an intelligent cyber layer that consists of data processing algorithms and a wide network of sensors. Cyberattacks on this data processing and collecting system might halt operations and have catastrophic physical consequences like system breakdowns. A common kind of attack is the FDIA. To avoid detection by the state estimator's inherent anomaly detection capabilities, an attacker tries to trick the grid's underlying control system into producing disturbances. On top of that, there are major issues with customer-end security. For instance, criminals might intercept, alter, or replay wireless transmissions of power consumption signals sent by consumers to their utility provider. Consequently, smart grid security and privacy are major apprehensions. In order to prevent cyberattacks on the vital infrastructures of the electrical system, this thesis helps. New detection systems for the generating and transmission side, as well as the end-user customer side infrastructure, are the primary focus of the study. To protect the generating and transmission sides from cyber-attack, we provide a system based on intelligent sensor weights and an optimization strategy based on sophisticated grey wolves. In addition, to safeguard end-user customer data from cyberattacks, we provide a gaussian mixture model–based privacy protection strategy and an artificial neural structure–based intelligent loop detection method.

Vehicle ad hoc networks (VANETs) have emerged to make traffic more efficient and intelligent. Road side units (RSUs) can act as sensors and as a provider of route information for vehicles. RSUs have processing, storage, and communication capabilities. However, RSUs can suffer from peak requests, non-functional data demands and unavailability. To overcome this deficiency, cloud computing can act as an additional resource, processing part of the requests, named vehicular cloud computing (VCC). This paper uses stochastic Petri nets (SPNs) and reliability block diagrams (RBD) to assess a VCC architecture's availability and reliability withmultiple RSUs. Two sensitivity analyseswere performed which have identified themodel's components that have themost significant impact. In addition to a base model, extended models with greater redundancy were also proposed. The base model has obtained A = 97.68%, and the extended model obtained A = 99.19%. Therefore, the models aim to help network administrators plan more optimised VANET architectures, reducing failures.

Today's electromyography (EMG) sensor systems usually require complicated setups for data acquisition and processing. Especially for facial muscle sensing, small and portable systems are required to allow longer and more realistic measurements. Research in the area of affective states and distinct emotions requires larger studies with extended recording times. Therefore, the acceptance of the sensor by the subjects is crucial. In collaboration with a team of clinical psychologists, this work presents a Bluetooth Low Energy 5.4 enabled wireless surface EMG sensor with edge pre-processing and post-processing on a PC for data evaluation.
