This paper studies a wireless communication system assisted by a reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS). We design a practical communication protocol that considers the time and power required for channel estimation and control feedback. Based on this protocol, we propose a novel irregular element-grouping RIS. By designing the selection topology, elements are irregularly selected from the RIS, providing additional spatial degrees of freedom despite a limited number of elements. To further reduce the overhead associated with channel estimation and control feedback, we employ an element-grouping method. Each group consists of a set of adjacent elements that share the same combined channel and phase shift. To maximize the effective rate (ER), we propose an algorithm that jointly optimizes the selection topology, phase shift design, and transmit power allocation. Numerical results demonstrate that the proposed structure increases the ER by up to 41% and 24% compared to regular RIS and regular RIS with element-grouping, respectively.

Minimally invasive pediatric surgery presents ergonomic challenges that significantly increase the risk of musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) among surgeons due to prolonged periods of suboptimal posture. This study introduces a real-time posture monitoring and correction system designed to address this issue. The system utilizes depth camera technology, interactive feedback mechanisms, advanced skeletal tracking, and ergonomic assessment algorithms to continuously monitor and evaluate surgeons’ posture. Through rapid data processing, the system provides real-time feedback, enabling immediate posture adjustments during surgical procedures. It delivers non-intrusive alerts to inform medical staff when incorrect postures are detected, thereby promoting ergonomic well-being and reducing the incidence of MSDs. Designed for seamless integration into the perioperative environment, the system meets strict requirements for privacy, sterility, and operational efficiency. Beyond its application in surgical practice, the system can also enhance surgical education and training by providing real-time feedback, enabling personalized learning pathways, and gamified simulation exercises. It provides detailed analyses of trainee performance, enabling instructors to deliver targeted feedback and develop adaptive training strategies based on detected posture deviations. Small to medium-scale farmers in the Philippines face challenges in connecting with buyers due to limited marketing capabilities, facilities, and industry connections, leading to the exploitation of farmers through unfair pricing and undervaluation of products. SakaNet addressed such challenges by developing a web and mobile application that allowed farmers to connect with more buyers and other role players in the agribusiness sector, help market their products online, and sell following their preferred pricing. The application was designed and developed following the Agile Kanban methodology. It used React and *** to create the client-side for the web, React Native and Expo for the mobile client, and Apollo GraphQL (specifically Apollo Server) with Express integration, MongoDB, and Node used for the server. The system was assessed using black box testing and achieved significant success in terms of functionality, with the web version passing 98.8% and the mobile version passing 79% of the test scenarios. The system's effectiveness was also evaluated using ISO25010 criteria, categorized into functional suitability, performance efficiency, compatibility, usability, reliability, security, maintainability, and portability. Results show that both applications demonstrated high functionality and usability, with the web application scoring higher than the mobile counterpart. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2025.

Software Defined networking (SDN) is a new networking standard that significantly reduces the complexity of network administration tasks. SDN is considered a networking breakthrough. Additionally, it provides a flexible interface that allows for network innovation by controlling the network’s general behavior. However, for many years, traditional IP networks were difficult to maintain, prone to errors, and difficult to grow with new features. The idea is derived from the separation and abstraction of the data plane and the control of conventional network devices. Better segmentation, scalability, programmability, faster delivery, and increased service and experience quality are all advantages of this separation for network operations. To make system administrators' tasks more at ease, SDN has been suggested as a prospective standard for a symbolized and rationally integrated network administration plane. By separating the control and data planes, SDN enables network configuration through programmability. This paper provides a comprehensive explanation of SDN, covering its numerous levels and their purposes, to keep up with the new technologies accelerated development. Wireless Visual Sensor Networks (WVSNs) are widely used but require effective strategies for coverage, connectivity, and efficient data collection due to high visual data demands. This paper adopts a cross-layer approach, framing sensor deployment and scheduling as an optimization problem. We propose SEED, a Scheduling-Aware Enhanced Depth-First search algorithm, capable of achieving optimal solutions given sufficient time. Evaluations show our approach reduces communication latency and minimizes sensor usage effectively.

networking research needs testbeds that are flexible, fast, and efficient. FABRIC is a modern platform built for advanced experiments, offering better customization and performance. This paper compares FABRIC and GENI, focusing on how well they handle routing protocols, especially Open Shortest Path First (OSPF), a widely used method for finding the best network paths. The study looks at control overhead, which is the extra data used for routing, and convergence time, which shows how quickly the network adapts to changes. By testing OSPF on FABRIC, we see how it compares to GENI in handling network updates. The results show that FABRIC lowers overhead and speeds up convergence, making it a better choice for research and real-world use. Its flexible design also makes it future-ready, supporting faster and more efficient networking in evolving systems. FABRIC’s ability to adapt to changing network conditions makes it a reliable choice for future innovations.

This paper provides a future looking perspective on the evolution of cloud-native technologies in the design, operation, and maintenance of industrial control systems with aging device communication protocols. First a look at traditional control system design patterns and technologies before the Industry 4.0 shift. Then consider how advanced computing and networking power introduced with Industry 4.0 changed control systems in the past 10 years. Finally, a look at how the shift towards cloud-native technologies, big data processing, AI, and advanced computer-aided learning algorithms are challenged by the data modeling and transport norms of today's systems. This paper is a work in progress and draws no conclusions on the future. The purpose of this paper is to bring academic discussion into the needs for communication standardization in the evolving space of cloud-based control system design.

Next-generation wireless networks 6G are tasked with accommodating diverse applications beyond traditional communications. This paper delves into the use-case of computation offload, a pivotal use case within the broader framework of beyond communications applications (e.g., sensing, localization, etc.). More specifically, it focuses on the local subnetwork and decentralized distributed compute use-cases, where the control of the computation offload procedure is not within a central entity. This is realized on top of the subnetwork’s architecture. In this work we propose a general architecture and procedural flow that allows for the realization of local subnetwork and decentralized distributed compute.

As Programmable Logic controllers (PLCs) become more integrated into complex industrial systems and networks, their software components face increased security vulnerabilities. Fuzz testing, which uses unexpected inputs to find vulnerabilities, has been used to enhance PLC security but is primarily focused on communication protocols, often overlooking control logic. This paper presents a fuzzing framework for PLC control logic programs. The framework is designed to handle control logic’s unique execution process, which may involve translating PLC languages into general-purpose languages. It generates structurally valid test cases and is platform-independent. We implement our prototype around the OpenPLC environment and expand our experiments to a Wago PLC image to evaluate the feasibility of our method on real-world devices. Our approach exhibits strong performance in terms of code coverage, test case pass rate, and crash detection, while ensuring high time efficiency.

In federated learning systems, malicious attackers can manipulate training datasets by injecting backdoor triggers to achieve data poisoning. Addressing this vulnerability, this paper proposes a new defense method, the adaptive differential privacy stochastic gradient descent (ADP-SGD) algorithm, which increases the Euclidean distance between malicious and benign updates to enhance aggregation efficiency. Experiments were conducted on typical datasets, and the results show that combining ADP-SGD with the m-Krum aggregation algorithm can effectively defend against backdoor attacks in complex attack environments. While ensuring the accuracy of the main task, it significantly reduces the success rate of backdoor attacks, especially under the condition of unknown proportions of malicious participants, proving to be effective and robust. © 2025 The Authors.
