Cities and metropolitan region are becoming the main pattern of organization for civilizations. Therefore, they form socio-economic systems of growing importance. These systems show a high complexity and lack a centralized hierarchical structure. Therefore, de-central, distributed approaches for the management and patterns of self-organization are required. On a technical level, smart system approaches like the smart city or smart grid are applied using the advances in IT, e.g. the Internet-of-Things (IoT). Relevant fields of application are metropolitan mobility and renewable energy systems. Specifically in the energy sector - apart from smart electricity grids - the heating grids are an important topic for "smartification". This paper describes a holistic systems engineering approach for the future energy (and mobility) systems of metropolitan regions. The industry-university cluster ruhrvalley formed by more than 50 partners in one of the largest European metropolitan regions - the German Ruhr Valley - has set out the target to develop such a systems engineering methodology. It is based on the combination of innovation management approaches with a structured process for the development of intelligent technical systems. The resulting "smartification process" is applied to the design of a flexible and controllable organic rankine cycle (ORC) turbine as a component for such systems. The overall approach described in this paper is a generic concept of a development process with an outlook on the upcoming steps of research and implementation.

The use of quadrotors to civilian and military missions has been increased and the challenges involved on controlling it, mainly in indoors and restricted environments, has been attracting robotics researchers. Thus, an automatic collision avoidance approach is of utmost importance in this scenario, given the difficulty of control and the risk of accidents involved in the use of these vehicles. This paper presents an approach for obstacle avoidance of a manually controlled quadrotor automatically, allowing the operator to keep focus on the overall mission. The method is based on constantly estimating its future path considering its dynamics, current status, current control and distances measured by four on-board sonar sensors. Simultaneously, the pose is estimated based on the quadrotor odometry and an occupation grid representation of the nearby environment is constructed using the sonar sensors measurements. All that information is used to determine an imminent collision and overrides the user control, if necessary, keeping its last safe position. All the solution was evaluated in a simulator, the real quadrotor's and sonars sensors were characterized to be embedded in the quadrotor through a computer-on-module and controlled over wireless network communication.

A method which can replace complicated hardware description language programming through calling modules and setting parameters is proposed. The designed phase shift signal generator passes waveform simulation under Simulink and Signal Tap II certification, and the results obtained on the FPGA board are correct. The DSP Builder is utilized to design the phase shift signal generator, which reduces the difficulty of the design and shortens the design time.

Modern miniature trains are now driven by means of the DCC (Digital Command and control) system, which allows the human operator or a personal computer to launch commands to each individual train or even to control different features of the same train. The digital command station encodes these commands and sends them to the trains by means of electrical pulses via the rails of the railway network. Due to the development of the miniature railway network, it may happen that the power requirement of the increasing number of digital locomotives, carriages and accessories exceeds the nominal output power of the digital command station. This digital intelligent booster relieves the digital command station from powering the entire railway network all by itself, and it automatically handles the multiple powered sections of the network. This electronic device is also able to detect and process short-circuits and overload conditions, without the intervention of the digital command station.

In this paper various adaptive filters have been thoroughly applied to biomedical data processing in the aim to implement a barrier between noise reduction and preservation of the useful information. Electrocardiography (ECG) presents one of the most important indicators, which can be informed of the recognizing approaches to discover heart disease. Due to its inherent importance, it is interesting to develop new technique of prevention and processing medical information. The main goal is to extract necessary information on the state of the heart. The ECG signals are generally contaminated and infected by many parasites, which can be polluted, and in some cases make unrecognizable information. Therefore, an efficient process with good performance (accuracy, speed) is essential. In this papers we describe a comparative study between different applied adaptive filtering algorithms including Normalized Least Mean Square (LMS), Least Mean Square (NLMS), Recursive Least Square (RLS) and Kalman Filter (KF). The Percent Root-Mean-Squared Difference (PRD) and the Signal to Noise Ratio (SNR) are the two basic parameters that used to compare the performances of all algorithms.

At present, massive amounts of image data have been generated at the power construction site. Due to the limitation of power communication transmission bandwidth, it is necessary to improve the low bit rate, high compression ratio, and anti-interference of the image, which is very necessary for on-site management personnel under the premise of ensuring efficient information transmission. Aiming at the above problems, this paper proposes an improved algorithm based on Set Partitioning in Hierarchical Trees (SPIHT). Firstly, the feature value of the image is extracted, and then the wavelet encoding is performed to obtain the compressed image. Compared with the traditional multi-level tree ensemble splitting algorithm, experimental data show that the image compressed by this algorithm has better visual effects and higher peak signal-to-noise ratio. Therefore, the method can effectively improve the transmission performance of the on-site image of the infrastructure construction, and ultimately improve the efficiency of the on-site inspection for violations.
