As the size of modern datasets exceeds the disk and memory capacities of a single computer, machine learning practitioners have resorted to parallel and distributed computing. Given that optimization is one of the pillars of machine learning and predictive modeling, distributed optimization methods have recently garnered ample attention, in particular when either observations or features are distributed, but not both. We propose a general stochastic algorithm where observations, features, and gradient components can be sampled in a double distributed setting, i.e., with both features and observations distributed. Very technical analyses establish convergence properties of the algorithm under different conditions on the learning rate (diminishing to zero or constant). Computational experiments in Spark demonstrate a superior performance of our algorithm versus a benchmark in early iterations of the algorithm, which is due to the stochastic components of the algorithm. © 2024 IEEE.

With the advances in the large-scale computing platforms, jobs that run on such systems are becoming complex and they present increased variability. In these systems, the workload usually has complex structure including jobs with different characteristics. Along with regular jobs, there are jobs represented as linear workflows (LWs) or even jobs which are bags of LWs. Consequently, efficient scheduling algorithms should be employed to ensure satisfactory performance as well as fair processing of jobs. This research aims to study appropriate scheduling algorithms of mixed workloads consisting of simple jobs including one task only, along with bags-of-LWs (BoLWs). Different techniques for scheduling are studied in a set of distributed resources. Extensive simulation experiments are carried out to investigate their effectiveness for various system utilization levels and variability in job/task service demands. The results demonstrate that the efficacy of the scheduling schemes depends on the variability level in job/task service demands, the system load, and the level of fairness that is considered as satisfactory.

With the rapid development of the new generation of information technologies, including cloud computing, 5G, and the Internet of Things, data outsourcing storage in the cloud has brought great convenience to data storage or access anytime and anywhere. Due to the separation of ownership and management of outsourced stored data, it faces data security risks, including data loss and personal privacy disclosure. The third-party audit of data operational behavior by logs is often employed to strengthen the security of outsourced data. However, some privacy breach incidents in recent years show that third parties who may leak information about data and users' identities are not always trustworthy. To achieve data security and privacy protection, an operation behavior auditing scheme for outsourced data is proposed with the blockchain rather than third parties. The data operation behavior audit is carried out from three dimensions: integrity of the operation behavior log, the credibility of the operation behavior information, and compliance of operation behavior. The security analysis and experiment results indicate that this scheme is secure and feasible. © 2023 IEEE.

Support for an ever-expanding range of distributed and parallel strategies and support for performance analysis are constantly evolving. We propose message passing interface (MPI) and open multi-processing (OpenMP) standards that provide various software development tools covering a wide range of techniques not strictly limited to shared memory. The theoretical part focuses on a general overview of the current capabilities of MPI and OpenMP as application programming interfaces. The authors researched the high-performance computing (HPC) cluster environment, and this work provides results and representative examples. Also, in this study, it has been proven that to obtain favorable processing efficiency and write the code correctly— regardless of the programming paradigm used—it is necessary to know the basic concepts related to a given distributed and parallel architecture. Additionally, in this study, we investigated the need to adapt the tools used to solve a specific problem regarding improving processing efficiency. With the rapid advancement of the gaming industry and the demand to create high-performance games, game programmers must be well-versed in concurrent programming and parallel computing concepts. This paper presents a set of project-based learning activities for teaching parallel computing concepts to game programmers. We propose four project-based activities: (1) asynchronous image loader, (2) multi-threaded ray tracer, (3) interactive loading screen, and (4) interactive 3D model viewer. Our projects require computer graphics and game programming concepts, differentiating our projects from other parallel computing course assignments. Such projects may be of interest to undergraduate students who wish to pursue game programming in the future. Similarly, the projects may be taught to game programmers who have yet to learn about parallel computing. A pilot course delivery was conducted at De La Salle University, where 39 students have enrolled. Students have generally achieved high scores (>80%), implying the effectiveness of the learning content in developing the projects. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2024.

The increasing demand for computational power in big data and machine learning has driven the development of distributed training methodologies. Among these, peer-to-peer (P2P) networks provide advantages such as enhanced scalability and fault tolerance. However, they also encounter challenges related to resource consumption, costs, and communication overhead as the number of participating peers grows. In this paper, we introduce a novel architecture that combines serverless computing with P2P networks for distributed training and present a method for efficient parallel gradient computation under resource constraints. Our findings show a significant enhancement in gradient computation time, with up to a 97.34% improvement compared to conventional P2P distributed training methods. As for costs, our examination confirmed that the serverless architecture could incur higher expenses, reaching up to 5.4 times more than instance-based architectures. It is essential to consider that these higher costs are associated with marked improvements in computation time, particularly under resource-constrained scenarios. Despite the cost-time trade-off, the serverless approach still holds promise due to its pay-as-you-go model. Utilizing dynamic resource allocation, it enables faster training times and optimized resource utilization, making it a promising candidate for a wide range of machine learning applications.

We build a message-passing realization of the QR factorization for tall-and-skinny matrices on top of highly parallel linear algebra kernels, such as various types of matrix multiplications and triangular system solves, plus a few small Cholesky decompositions. Our solution, using either the NVIDIA Collective Communications Library (NCCL) or a plain instance of MPI as the message-passing layer, and the implementation of these kernels in linear algebra libraries, can run both on clusters of multicore nodes, possibly accelerated with GPUs, or on multi-GPU platforms. The experimental evaluation of our parallel algorithm for the QR factorization on a cluster of 8 nodes with NVIDIA A100 boards shows significant acceleration factors over a code from MAGMA, based on House-lholder reflectors, that provides the same functionality. In addition, the experiments show a fair weak scalability when the problem has many more rows than columns.

Since modern high performance computing systems are evolving towards diverse and heterogeneous architectures, the emergence of high-level portable programming models leads to a particular focus on performance portability. In this paper, we evaluate the performance portability and explore performance optimization methods for two portable programming models SYCL and Kokkos. We take an open-source multi-phase Lattice Boltzmann Method (LBM) flow simulation code as a case study and implement portable versions with different optimizations. Then we compare our portable implementations with engineer-tuned OpenMP and CUDA versions on Intel CPUs and NVIDIA GPUs. Experimental results show that both SYCL and Kokkos can deliver superior performance than traditional programming models, but the best performance of the portable versions depends heavily on platform-specific optimizations. There is no single implementation that can achieve the best performance on both CPUs and GPUs. Consequently, we conclude that the performance portability still needs to be further improved for both SYCL and Kokkos. In addition, we present a comparative analysis of different optimization methods that qualify the performance enhancement when using SYCL and Kokkos on CPUs and GPUs. Our work offers valuable references for the development of both portable programming models and applications. © 2023 IEEE.

In the field of mobile edge computing, the k Edge Server Placement (kESP) problem has attracted extensive attention. However, existing studies have mainly focused on solving small-scale problems, and the large-scale scenarios need to be explored. Based on this observation, this paper attempts to develop a cost-effective solution for the large-scale kESP problem. The proposed algorithm named UCIS-kESP realizes the selection of a small subset from a large collection of base stations by clustering mobile users, thereby significantly reducing the search cost of the kESP problem. Subsequently, an intelligent search based on genetic algorithm is applied to find the 'optimal' deployment of k edge servers from the candidate subset. The experimental analysis conducted on a public dataset demonstrates that our proposed UCIS-kESP algorithm obtains better deployment solutions than the state-of-the-art algorithms, while also exhibiting fast and stable solving efficiency. On average, our algorithm can save about 40% of the computational time. Even as the size of the kESP problem increases, the computational overhead of the UCIS-kESP algorithm grows relatively slowly. © 2023 IEEE.

In the past, data processing was completed on a computer or a server. This is because the resources available at that time were limited. However, with the progress of technology, it is possible to use multiple computers and servers to process large amounts of data. This is where cloud computing comes into play. Cloud computing allows users to access data from anywhere at any time using an Internet connection. It also reduces the cost of enterprises because they do not have to buy additional hardware or software for each user. Aiming at the problems of single scale of traditional computer data processing and poor degree of adaptive parallel computing, this paper proposes a multi-source information accelerated data processing method of cloud computing technology, analyzes the application of cloud computing technology in computer data processing, and adopts the dynamic optimization technology of cloud computing speed to build a dynamic adjustment model of multi-source information data flow application of cloud computing, so as to reduce the energy cost of cloud computing, Combined with the experience of data processing users, the model can support multi-user computing entity sharing in the cloud to improve the running efficiency of data flow applications and reduce the energy cost of computer data processing. This article first outlines the basic meaning of cloud computing technology, starting with providing conditions for data transmission and sharing, and highlighting the application value of cloud computing technology. It analyzes the trend of cloud computing technology, and combines the modeling of cloud computing technology in computer data processing to propose application countermeasures for cloud computing technology in computer data processing. © 2023 IEEE.
