Satellites make use of thrusters related to their missions, station keeping maneuvers and end-of-life transfers. One of the secondary effects of thruster firings are the disturbing forces and torques caused by the interactions between the plume and satellite. A comprehensive numerical effort is conducted to predict disturbing forces and torques due to thruster plume and give input to mission related performance such as the amount needed for the lifetime of the satellite. A numerical approach which is based on Direct Simulation Monte Carlo method is used to model the plume of thrusters making use of adaptive mesh refinement (AMR) and Message Passing Interface (MPI). The individual simulations are able to predict the disturbing forces and torques given the position, orientation and exit profiles of thrusters on a geostationary satellite geometry. The other major focus of the study is to efficiently sweep the design parameter space, create response surface functions (RSF) that are orders of magnitude faster than actual high fidelity simulations and feed these RSFs into orbit propagation tools.

New generation networks belong to the class of big sophisticated heterogeneous hierarchical geographically distributed systems. Their functional characteristics, defining reliability, are the main characteristics which provide the application of these networks for their intended purpose. The paper offers the method of on-line functional monitoring of technical states of the new generation network elements based on application of a hierarchical fuzzy logical inference. The method and the generalized algorithm of on-line functional monitoring of technical states are developed. For realization of the offered method, the technology of intelligent agents is used. The functional structure of the intelligent agent is offered. The order of its interaction with a network element is considered. Results of modeling have shown a high efficiency of the offered approach. The possibility of the hardware-software realization of the offered method and algorithm a near real time mode is shown.

Cryptocurrencies, blockchain technology and smart contracts could fundamentally change the way how financial products and financial services are implemented and operated. While many frameworks for implementing such blockchain applications already exist, these are usually implemented using languages either considered "fancy" today, like e.g. Go, or are traditionally used for system software, such as C++. On the other hand, the core business applications e.g. in financial services are typically implemented using enterprise platforms such as Java Enterprise Edition (EE) and/or COBOL. Therefore, to improve the integration of blockchain technology in such applications, in this paper we argue in favor of a legacy-friendly distributed ledger solution by introducing QWICSchain, an implementation build on web services using established open-source enterprise technologies such as Java EE and PostgreSQL. It supports the parallel execution of transactions on the blockchain and in existing legacy applications, thus enabling the blockchain-based modernization of existing IT infrastructures.

In this paper we propose an architecture specifically devoted to the analysis of huge natural language biomedical textual collections, with the purpose of searching for semantic similarity in order to obtain useful hints for effective simulation that could help physicians in diagnosis tasks. We leverage Word Embedding models trained with word2vec algorithm and a Big Data architecture for their processing and management. We performed some preliminary analyses using a dataset extracted from the whole PubMed library and we developed a web front-end to show the usability of this methodology in a real context.

In this paper we study reliability, timeliness and load reduction in an hybrid Mobile Edge computing (MEC)/Cloud game streaming infrastructure. In our scenario, a user plays a game streamed by the producer to their handheld device or User Equipment (UE). The UE communicates user actions to the edge/cloud via the mobile communication infrastructure;the object is to retrieve the latest game status, of which the most important information is the rendered frame. Particularly, we study reliability through replication in a number of MEC-servers, timeliness through Age of Information (AoI) and load reduction by leveraging the X2 interface at the edge, in order to abort useless frame rendering computations. We translate it as a scenario where a sink - representing the UE - is interested in the freshest possible update from distributed nodes. Each node sends updates following a Last Come First Served (LCFS) policy with preemption. We consider two scenarios;the first is n parallel LCFS systems sending updates, and the second adds a feedback loop aimed at decreasing the number of jobs sent per second by the nodes, thus decreasing the load per node. We analyze the number of jobs sent per second and average peak Age of Information at the sink, showing that the second scheme achieves a significantly lower rate of jobs compared with the first, while maintaining constant AoI, thus reducing the load at the edge. We also find that using the feedback loop, we achieve the maximum saving in transmitted jobs per second when the average arrival rate per system is equal to the inverse of the average busy time in every node.

The advent of open-source serverless computing frameworks has introduced the ability to bring the Functions-as-a-Service (FaaS) paradigm for applications to be executed on-premises. In particular, data-driven scientific applications can benefit from these frameworks with the ability to trigger scalable computation in response to incoming workloads of files to be processed. This paper introduces an open-source framework to achieve on-premises serverless computing for event-driven data processing applications that features: i) the automated provisioning of an elastic Kubernetes cluster that can grow and shrink, in terms of the number of nodes, on multi-Clouds;ii) the automated deployment of a FaaS framework together with a data storage back-end that triggers events upon file uploads;iii) a service that provides a REST API to orchestrate the creation of such functions and iv) a graphical user interface that provides a unified entry point to interact with the aforementioned services. Together, this provides a framework to deploy a computing platform to create highly-parallel event-driven file-processing serverless applications that execute on customized runtime environments provided by Docker containers that run on an elastic Kubernetes cluster. The usefulness of this framework is exemplified by means of the execution of a data-driven workflow for optimised object detection on video. The workflow is tested under three different workloads which process ten, a hundred and a thousand functions. The results show that the presented architecture is able to process such workloads taking advantage of its elasticity to make a sensible usage of the resources.
