Adenocarcinomas are tumors that originate in the lining epithelium of the ducts that form the endocrine glands of the human body. Infiltrating breast and one of the most frequent neoplasms among female population, and the early detection of the disease is then fundamental and, for this reason, a profound knowledge of the biology of tumor at this phase is essential. Among the distinct tools that contribute to this knowledge, computational simulation is more frequently used every day. The availability of fast and efficient computations that allow the simulation of tumor dynamics in situ, under a wide range of different parameters, is an important research topic. Based on cellular automata, this paper proposes a generic simulation model for the Adenocarcinomas In Situ (CIS). We applied it to the breast ductal adenocarcinoma in situ (DCIS), modeling our cells with the genomic load that we currently know that the tumor starts, and proposing a numerical coding method for the genome that allows efficient computational management. We propose a parallelization scheme using data parallelism, and we show the acceleration achieved in multiple nodes of our cluster of processors.

Given the continuous increase of the data size to be processed, the need for the information manipulation' speed (acquisition, processing, and analysis) has become increasingly necessary in many areas. In brain imaging, diagnostic systems provide large amounts of data in 2D and 3D with different modalities. Nevertheless, in front of the technological limitation and the development of the microprocessors speed, in recent years, researchers have moved to parallelism as an alternative to design algorithms running on distributed systems, computing grids or massively parallel systems. With the advent of the GP-GPU concept (General Purpose - Graphical Processing Unit), which means the use of graphic cards (originally designed for graphic rendering) for general computing, several researchers are oriented towards this new use of GPUs to dispense the microprocessor CPUs expensive treatment portions of their sequential algorithms. Approximation via sampling is a widespread technique whenever exact solutions are too expensive. In this paper, we present techniques for an efficient parallelization of adaptive (a.k.a. progressive) sampling algorithms on multi-threaded shared-memory machines. Our basic algorithmic technique requires no synchronization except for atomic load-acquire and store-release operations. It does, however, require O(n) memory per thread, where n is the size of the sampling state. We present variants of the algorithm that either reduce this memory consumption to O(1) or ensure that deterministic results are obtained. Using the KADABRA algorithm for betweenness centrality (a popular measure in network analysis) approximation as a case study, we demonstrate the empirical performance of our techniques. In particular, on a 32-core machine, our best algorithm is 2.9x faster than what we could achieve using a straightforward OpenMP-based parallelization and 65.3x faster than the existing implementation of KADABRA.

Moving loads such as cars and trains are very useful sources of seismic waves, which can be analyzed to retrieve information on the seismic velocity of subsurface materials using the techniques of ambient noise seismology. This information is valuable for a variety of applications such as geotechnical characterization of the near-surface, seismic hazard evaluation, and groundwater monitoring. However, for such processes to converge quickly, data segments with appropriate noise energy should be selected. distributed Acoustic Sensing (DAS) is a novel sensing technique that enables acquisition of these data at very high spatial and temporal resolution for tens of kilometers. One major challenge when utilizing the DAS technology is the large volume of data that is produced, thereby presenting a significant Big Data challenge to find regions of useful energy. In this work, we present a highly scalable and efficient approach to process real, complex DAS data by integrating physics knowledge acquired during a data exploration phase followed by deep supervised learning to identify "useful" coherent surface waves generated by anthropogenic activity, a class of seismic waves that is abundant on these recordings and is useful for geophysical imaging. Data exploration and training were done on 130 Gigabytes (GB) of DAS measurements. Using parallel computing, we were able to do inference on an additional 170 GB of data (or the equivalent of 10 days' worth of recordings) in less than 30 minutes. Our method provides interpretable patterns describing the interaction of ground-based human activities with the buried sensors.

In the paper a new parallel & distributed hydrodynamical code HydroBox3D for numerical simulation of supernovae Ia type explosion was described. The HydroBox3D code is created on basis of combination the adaptive nested mesh for hydrodynamical simulation of supernovae explosion and the regular mesh is second level of nested mesh for hydrodynamical simulation of nuclear reaction. The adaptive nested mesh code for shared memory architecture with using Intel Optane technology was developed. The second level of nested mesh code for Intel Xeon Phi KNL supercomputer was developed. The HydroBox3D code analysis is described. Electric Autonomous Vehicles (EAVs) promise to be an effective way to solve transportation issues such as accidents, emissions and congestion, and aim at establishing the foundation of Machine-to-Machine (M2M) economy. For this to be possible, the market should be able to offer appropriate charging services without involving humans. The state-of-the-art mechanisms of charging and billing do not meet this requirement, and often impose service fees for value transactions that may also endanger users and their location privacy. This paper aims at filling this gap and envisions a new charging architecture and a billing framework for EAV which would enable M2M transactions via the use of distributed Ledger Technology (DLT). © 2019, Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

Accurate large-scale first principles calculations based on density functional theory (DFT) in metallic systems are prohibitively expensive due to the asymptotic cubic scaling computational complexity with number of electrons. Using algorithmic advances in employing finite-element discretization for DFT (DFT-FE) in conjunction with efficient computational methodologies and mixed precision strategies, we delay the onset of this cubic scaling by significantly reducing the computational prefactor while increasing the arithmetic intensity and lowering the data movement costs. This has enabled fast, accurate and massively parallel DFT calculations on large-scale metallic systems on both many-core and heterogeneous architectures, with time-to-solution being an order of magnitude faster than state-of-the-art plane-wave DFT codes. We demonstrate an unprecedented sustained performance of 46 PFLOPS (27.8% peak FP64 performance) on a dislocation system in Magnesium containing 105,080 electrons using 3,800 GPU nodes of Summit supercomputer, which is the highest performance to-date among DFT codes.

Federated learning (FL) is a well established method for performing machine learning tasks over massively distributed data. However in settings where data is distributed in a non-iid (not independent and identically distributed) fashion - as is typical in real world situations - the joint model produced by FL suffers in terms of test set accuracy and/or communication costs compared to training on iid data. We show that learning a single joint model is often not optimal in the presence of certain types of non-iid data. In this work we present a modification to FL by introducing a hierarchical clustering step (FL+HC) to separate clusters of clients by the similarity of their local updates to the global joint model. Once separated, the clusters are trained independently and in parallel on specialised models. We present a robust empirical analysis of the hyperparameters for FL+HC for several iid and non-iid settings. We show how FL+HC allows model training to converge in fewer communication rounds (significantly so under some non-iid settings) compared to FL without clustering. Additionally, FL+HC allows for a greater percentage of clients to reach a target accuracy compared to standard FL. Finally we make suggestions for good default hyperparameters to promote superior performing specialised models without modifying the the underlying federated learning communication protocol.

As the parallelism in high-performance supercomputers continues to grow, new programming models become necessary to maintain programmer productivity at today's levels. Dataflow is a promising execution model because it can represent parallelism at different granularity levels and to dynamically adapt for efficient execution. The downside is the low-level programming interface inherent to dataflow. We present a strategy to translate programs written in Hierarchically Tiled Arrays (HTA) to the dataflow API of Open Community Runtime (OCR) system. The goal is to enable program development in a convenient notation and at the same time take advantage of the benefits of a dataflow runtime system. Using HTA produces more comprehensive codes than those written using the dataflow runtime programming interface. Moreover, the experiments show that, for applications with high asynchrony and sparse data dependences, our implementation delivers superior performance than OpenMP using parallel for loops.
