Age of information (AoI) is an important metric used to quantify the freshness of data. By utilizing resources of the edge server near the source nodes, mobile edge computing (MEC) can speed up the processing of information updates and ensure data freshness. However, the resources of the edge server are usually limited, so it is necessary to study the resource allocation strategy to ensure data freshness and optimize the profit of the edge server. In this paper, we propose a game-theoretic approach for resource allocation in mobile edge computing to guarantee information freshness. First, with the purpose of ensuring information freshness, we formalize the problem as minimizing the computational cost of source nodes and maximizing the profit of the edge server. Then, we introduce a two-stage dynamic game model to simulate the competitive process. We further transform the resource allocation problem into a knapsack problem and propose an iterative resource allocation algorithm based on dynamic programming. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm can obtain a Nash equilibrium and maximize the profit of the edge server while ensuring information freshness. © 2023 IEEE.

Due to the ever-increasing scale and complexity of cyber-physical networks for smart cities, efficient network analytics and trust maintenance are indispensable for the Internet of Things (IoT). Complex networks have led to dramatic advances in analyzing the structure of technological and social networks. Inspired by the properties in complex networks, in this paper, a cloud-fog-edge computing paradigm is proposed for smart cities by mapping into a hierarchical network structure. To evaluate the trustworthiness and attack tolerance in the IoT framework for smart cities, we propose a Network Trust Maintenance Metric (NTMM) from the concept of centrality in a complex network domain. The proposed theoretical and computational tools pave the way for the efficient measurement of the cloud-fog-edge computing paradigm. Each level of IoT topological structure will be mapped to the corresponding complex network models. The synthetic experimental results, together with the real-world datasets, provide the qualitative and quantitative evaluation of trust maintenance in IoT. This proves the feasibility and robustness of proposed the centrality metrics in complex networks. © 2023 IEEE.

The Function-as-a-Service (FaaS) paradigm is increasingly adopted for the development of Cloud-native applications, which especially benefit from the seamless scalability and attractive pricing models of serverless deployments. With the continuous emergence of latency-sensitive applications and services, including Internet-of-Things and augmented reality, it is now natural to wonder whether and how the FaaS paradigm can be efficiently exploited in the Cloud-Edge Continuum, where serverless functions may benefit from reduced network delay between their invoking users and the FaaS platform. In this paper, we illustrate the key challenges that must be faced to effectively deploy serverless functions in the Cloud-Edge Continuum and review recent contributions proposed by the research community towards overcoming those challenges. We also discuss the key issues that currently remain unsolved and highlight a few research opportunities for better support of FaaS in the Compute Continuum. © 2023 IEEE.

With the rapid growth in the number of mobile devices, more and more data is created and requested by users. By caching the data to the edge server, users can obtain the content they request in a closer place, which reduces the network load and improves the user experience. However, existing articles only focus on a single request of users, while users often request multiple content at one time, which leads to more complex caching scenarios. In this paper, we will study an edge data cache scenario with multiple requests, and design a cost function to optimize the cache results. In this paper, we formulate the data cache problem as a mixed integer programming problem and minimize our cost function. Extensive experiments are conducted on a real-world dataset that contains the locations of edge servers and mobile users, and the results reveal that our approach significantly outperform the baseline approaches. © 2023 IEEE.

In this study, we propose a distributed architecture that dynamically updates the model for classifying tweet streams generated in real time. Our architecture ingests data streams through Apache Kafka and classifies them based on Apache Spark Streaming. In order to dynamically reflect input stream changes into the classification model, we design the classification model that can be dynamically updated by updating the tokenizer and classifier for new tweet streams. The proposed architecture can provide effective classification for data streams due to the dynamic update and can efficiently process through parallel processing of distributed environments. Through experiments using cyberattack-related tweets, we show that our classification model gradually improves the classification accuracy from 0.8869 when the initial 50,000 tweets are used to 0.9094 when 200,000 tweets are accumulated by F1-score.

Due to the heterogeneity of workloads and the randomness and complexity of hybrid scheduling environment, How to address the challenge of minimizing data center running cost while ensuring workloads SLA has emerged as a significant research problem. To address this, we propose an Optimal Deep Reinforcement Learning Model for Running Cost Optimization in Hybrid Environments (ODRL). Firstly, we propose Running Cost Model (RCM) that analyzes data center running costs from two perspectives based on different running patterns of the workload and node affinity constraints, minimizing computing node utilization and resource running costs. Subsequently, we propose a Priority-Aware Scheduling Algorithm based on Deep Reinforcement Learning(PASD) that use AHP-TOPSIS to quantify workload characterization, get real-time feedback for environment and update historical experience through prioritized experience replay. Finally, extensive experimental results validate the effectiveness of the proposed model. In comparison to Kube-Scheduler, ODRL achieves a significant 15% improvement in reducing data center running cost. Additionally, there is a 7.8% increase in CPU utilization and a 16.7% increase in memory utilization. © 2023 IEEE.

With the flourishing development of the Internet of Things (IoT) era, Edge computing (EC) technology has garnered significant attention along with advancements in communication and IoT technologies. Effectively harnessing the computational resources in the edge environment has become a paramount concern. Accurate workload prediction is considered fundamental to optimizing the utilization of limited edge resources. However, most existing edge cloud load prediction approaches overlook the correlations among edge sites. Moreover, for cloud-native applications, user requests are typically handled by multiple containers. By evolving the work behavior of workload groups, it is possible to achieve a shift from focusing on individual containers to the collective, resulting in higher predictive accuracy. In this paper, the behavior of workload groups is analyzed through the reference to both static and dynamic container information. Leveraging the input data constructed based on the behavior of workload groups, an improved Sample Convolution and Interaction Network (SCINet) is employed for early multi-step prediction of edge container loads. Experimental validation on an edge cloud load dataset demonstrates the effectiveness of the proposed approach. Experimental results show that the proposed method can effectively improve the accuracy of edge cloud load prediction. © 2023 IEEE.

Cellular Automata (CA) models, initially studied by John von Neumann, have been developed by numerous researchers and applied in both academic and scientific fields. Thanks to their local and independent rules, simulations of complex systems can be easily implemented based on CA modelling on parallel machines. However, due to the heterogeneity of the components - from the hardware to the software perspective-the various possible scenarios running parallelism in today's architectures can pose a challenge in such implementations, making it difficult to exploit. This paper presents OpenCAL++, a transparent and efficient object-oriented platform for the parallel execution of cellular automata models. The architecture of OpenCAL++ ensures the modeller a fully transparent parallel execution and a strong 'separation of concerns' between the execution parallelism issues and the model implementation. The code implementing the Cellular Automata model remains the same whether the execution performs in a shared-, distributed-memory or a GPGPU context, irrespective of the optimizations adopted. To this aim, the object-oriented paradigm has been intensely exploited. As well as the OpenCAL++ architecture, we present the description of a simple Cellular Automata model implementation for illustrative purposes. © 2023 IEEE.

Recent advances in Visual Language Models (VLMs) have significantly enhanced video analytics. VLMs capture complex visual and textual connections. While Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) excel in spatial pattern recognition, VLMs provide a global context, making them ideal for tasks like complex incidents and anomaly detection. However, VLMs are much more computationally intensive, posing challenges for large-scale and real-time applications. This paper introduces EdgeCloudAI, a scalable system integrating VLMs and CNNs through edge-cloud computing. Edge-CloudAI performs initial video processing (e.g., CNN) on edge devices and offloads deeper analysis (e.g., VLM) to the cloud, optimizing resource use and reducing latency. We have deployed EdgeCloudAI on the NSF COSMOS testbed in NYC. In recent years, low-orbit satellite constellation technology has developed rapidly. Constellations consisting of hundreds of LEO satellites can achieve global coverage of signals and thus fast transmission of data between any two points worldwide. However, since LEO constellation is a periodically changing satellite network, it will be a major challenge to find out the communication route between two points in the dynamic network quickly. In this paper, the orbit coordinates of each satellite node in the constellation are predicted in the next one minute based on the orbit forecast using the two-body model, and then the trajectories of the satellite nodes in this period are fitted with the satellite link model to construct the network topology of the whole LEO constellation in this one minute. Finally, this paper introduces the time aggregation graph model and designs the shortest delay path on discrete time aggregation graph (SP-DTAG), which is used to find the shortest delay path in the network topology of LEO constellation. Finally, we realize the point-to-point real-time communication in the satellite network. Finally, the simulations are carried out in terms of end-to-end delay and packet loss rate of the network, and the simulation results show that the SP-DTAG algorithm involved in this paper has a good performance in terms of end-to-end delay and network packet loss rate of the LEO constellation network. © 2023 IEEE.
