Emulsification processes show a plethora of use cases in different industries. The complexity and intransparency of many emulsion systems make it hard to apply classic control approaches. The operation of these systems therefore often diverts towards a manual open-loop control. While population balance models (PBM) have been explored for multiple decades, they are rarely used in practice for closed-loop control due to the high computational effort. For this purpose a data-driven modeling approach specifically tailored to the control of complex emulsification devices is introduced. A new simplified description scheme of particle size distributions in combination with Gaussian process regression on a reasonably sized dataset can predict the system change. It additionally gives a useful measure of uncertainty for the predicted change, which is propagated onto the discrete distribution description. The concept is proven with leave-one-out cross-validation, before showing its potential in a model predictive control (MPC) simulation.

Exploring the potential of electrolytic aluminum loads (EALs) for demand response helps address the challenges of integrating renewable energy into power systems. However, most existing EAL models fail to consider thermal balance constraints and cost characteristics comprehensively. Recent studies attempting to address this issue still face difficulties in balancing modeling accuracy and computational efficiency, limiting their application in large-scale scheduling scenarios. This paper proposes an improved EAL modeling method that introduces more accurate thermal balance constraints by considering the dynamic variations in reaction energy and heat dissipation. We employ piecewise linearization and time decoupling techniques to handle nonlinear constraints and discontinuous cost functions. Case studies demonstrate that the improved model yields more reliable operation strategies by maintaining electrolyte temperatures within safe ranges during prolonged power regulation. By embedding EAL’s complex energy-material-temperature conversion mechanisms into a computationally efficient optimization framework, this work helps EALs better participate in real-world grid interaction scenarios.

The quadrotor Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) possesses various advantages, such as miniaturization, full autonomy, and a simple structure. However, its attitude control stability is challenging to ensure due to inherent characteristics, including underactuation, high coupling, nonlinearity, and susceptibility to disturbances. To address these issues, this paper conducts dynamic modeling of the quadrotor's actuators, attitude ring, and position ring, followed by controller design. A comparative study is performed between the ADRC control algorithm and the cascade PID algorithm, which is currently applied in mainstream flight control. Through rigorous simulation validation and real-world testing, the proposed approach achieves better control performance in terms of smoothness during startup, reduced overshoot, and enhanced disturbance rejection compared to the cascade PID algorithm. This optimization significantly improves the control stability of the quadrotor UAV.

Hybrid systems are widely used in safety-critical areas. Hybrid optimal control synthesis, which aims to generate an optimal sequence of control inputs for a given task, is one of the most important problems in the field. The classical Gradient-based methods are efficient but they require the system under control should be differentiable. Sampling-based methods have no such limitations, but the ability of existing ones to solve complex control missions is restricted. In this paper, we propose a practical and efficient method to solve a general class of hybrid optimal control problems. Basically, we transform the control synthesis problem into a derivative-free optimization (DFO) problem. Then, we adapt a start-of-art classification-based DFO method to solve the optimization problems based on sampled variables efficiently. Furthermore, for complex state space, which is difficult to solve, we present a piecewise control synthesis method to make a tradeoff between optimality and efficiency by generating feasible and piecewise optimal control inputs instead. The empirical results on two complex real-world hybrid systems: a vehicle and a quadcopter drone system, demonstrate that our method outperforms existing methods significantly.

The article discusses an approach that combines expert systems and dynamic models in an intellectualized operator information support system (IOISS) for nuclear power plant units. The main goal of this approach is to provide operators with the most complete and accurate information for the efficient management of power units (PU). The main functions of the IOISS of NPP PUs are highlighted, and a path is proposed for their full-scale implementation based on the use of predictive dynamic modeling of PU parameters and expert systems (ES). The use of predictive dynamic modeling makes it possible to predict the behavior of a power unit based on available data and calculate optimal control parameters. ES, in turn, provides expert knowledge and specialist experience, allowing operators to make informed decisions and respond to possible emergencies. The structure of the ES, which is part of the IOISS and includes modules for data analysis, decision-making, and information visualization, is considered. All these components work together to ensure the efficient and reliable operation of NPPs. This approach to IOISS is the basis for developing upper-level systems for instrumentation and control systems of NPPs. It can significantly improve the safety and efficiency of power units and simplify operators' decision-making process.

Empowered by mobile edge computing (MEC) technology, the intelligent railway construction system can further improve railway construction efficiency and ensure worker safety. By offloading complex computation tasks from smart devices (e.g., smart helmets and construction machinery) to a physically adjacent MEC server, the railway construction system can provide highly reliable and low-latency service for the construction machinery and workers. Due to the massive number of computing tasks from smart devices and machinery, MEC servers cannot always handle all the incoming computation tasks on time when they operate independently. They often need to cooperate through peer-offloading, and load balancing among multiple MEC servers becomes a critical challenge. In this paper, we design an MEC-based intelligent railway construction system. Several intelligent construction scenarios are designed using an MEC-based computing service. With the aim to minimize the average task computing time, we propose a potential game model to optimize the load balance among MEC servers. Multiple computation tasks are scheduled among the servers, and a learning algorithm is used to obtain the Nash equilibrium where the best response of each server is achieved. Extensive experimental results demonstrate that the proposed model can improve the performance of the intelligent railway construction system.

This work addresses the growing civilian applications of drone technology and the associated security risks, particularly with respect to public and air safety. To address these issues, we introduce an improved YOLOv11-DEC model for real-time detection of small-target unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) in complex environments. The model incorporates SBA, group normalisation, and detail-enhanced convolution, and integrates RepViT with EMA attention to increase feature representation and detection accuracy. Additionally, we developed a lightweight LSDECD detection head to maintain model size while preserving accuracy. Experiments on the DUT dataset show that YOLOv11-DEC outperforms baseline models such as YOLOv11, in terms of detection accuracy, offering an effective solution for UAV monitoring and defence systems.

Multi objective genetic algorithm is a new optimization algorithm developed in recent years for multi-objective optimization problems. Because of its high efficiency and practical characteristics, it has been paid more and more attention by the academic circles. Aiming at the modeling error in the design of flight control system controller and the influence of external interference in the flight process, PID control method is used to complete the design of a combat fuel engine control system controller. In order to improve the control accuracy of fighter and solve the limitation of the difficulty in selecting the weight matrix Q and R in LQG/LTR robust control method, genetic algorithm is added to optimize the weight matrix on line. At the same time, the system under different flight conditions and the parameter uncertainty caused by the system modeling process are simulated respectively, and compared with the traditional PID and the PID control based on genetic algorithm. © 2022, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd.

Vision-based applications such as traffic management, public area surveillance, and environmental monitoring require clear and accurate visual data from cameras to provide better services to people. But foggy weather and traffic pollution causes haze, dust, or smog to degrade image quality, and reduce visibility of the target area, and becomes a challenge to the reliability of the automated application in urban areas. They face some additional problems such as color distortion, non-uniform illumination, low light, and dense or nonhomogeneous haze. The learning-based methods outperform traditional image dehazing methods in complex real-world problems and utilize large image datasets, despite their notable performance, learning-based models can have high computation and may require wide-ranging training datasets. This paper discussed prior-based and deep learning-based image dehazing models to test the RESIDE dataset with indoor and outdoor hazy images. Further, objective evaluation metrics have been discussed that are being used to evaluate the quality of state-of-the-art methods. These methodologies help us to set up vision-based applications for smart cities and have shown great potential to enhance image quality affected by haze and low light.
