Consumption of electricity has grown, and that tendency will continue according to Energy Information Administration (EIA). Most modern distribution networks, evolving into Smart Grids, are managed through sophisticated software, such as advanced distribution management systems (ADMS). Their operations are based on gathering, analysis and transformation of data coming from the different devices in distribution network. Data volume in Smart Grids is increasing rapidly. Therefore, handling that growing amount of data may pose significant challenges for relational databases in the future, as they may struggle with demand for execution of complex queries. In some cases, like in modeling power system network, the data model is naturally represented by a graph, hence graph databases could provide viable, more efficient alternative. The paper is proposing an approach to include sensitive data access permissions in a graph oriented database - enabling us to decide who can access the sensitive data and who cannot. We have performed analysis on security controls to limit the access to personal data using a realistic data model derived from an existing network model of power distribution utility based in Europe, but described approach is also applicable to other sensitive data. We concluded that the proposed approach would provide ability for implementing access management security controls, while each approach would differently affect the levels of overall system performances.

After analyzing the resulting states of two bidirectionally linear interconnected Lorenz systems by the variation of the coupling strengths a bifurcation from chaos to period have been detected. The systems lose asymptotical stability as the coupling strengths takes specific values. These coupling strengths have been adjusted in order to be opposite in sign (i.e., one positive and one negative), and can be considered as a bifurcation parameter on the states of the resulting trajectories. The coupled system has been studied by means of bifurcation analysis, the distance between the resulting trajectories and the standard deviation along the iterated time. Numerical examples of the phase states of the coupled systems along with the bifurcation graphs are presented in order to visualize the resulting chaotic or periodic trajectories as well as the synchronized states. This work deals with the development and application of a model-based control system for an anaerobic digestion process which can recover energy using methane combustion. Due to the spatially distributed dynamics of some variables of the upflow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) reactor, a type of anaerobic digestion process, the traditional controlsystems may have insufficient performance to handle the complexity. An input-output (I/O) linearizing control scheme for a UASB reactor is developed for a two-step (acidogenesis-methanogenesis) kinetic model described by a coupled PDE-ODE system. The organic substrate (characterized by COD) is manipulated through the feed flow to achieve the desired trajectories. A simulation for closed-loop responses of the proposed control system is conducted and control performances are determined for servo and regulatory problems. The results show that the developed method provides very good responses to achieve the desired set points and handle the controlproblems without offset. Coordinating the charging and discharging of a population of batteries with respect to load and generation forecasts decreases operating costs. However, in the case of asymmetric charging and discharging efficiencies the mathematical formulation of this problem is not straightforward. This paper compares the scheduling problem for a population of batteries in two formulations: mixed-integer (MINLP) and non-convex real-valued (NLP). In the case of the latter, the resulting separable NLP is solved using the Augmented Lagrangian based Alternating Direction Inexact Newton (ALADIN). In the case of the latter, the resulting MINLP is solved in hierarchical distributed fashion, we propose a mixed-integer extension of ALADIN. Real load and generation data is used to create an example of 54 batteries demonstrating improved performance for the MINLP formulation. Real-time optimization of systems governed by partial differential equations (PDEs) presents significant computational challenges to nonlinear model predictive control (NMPC). The large-scale nature of PDEs often limits the use of standard nested black-box optimizers that require repeated forward simulations and expensive gradient computations. Hence, to ensure online solutions at relevant time-scales, large-scale NMPC algorithms typically require powerful, customized PDE-constrained optimization solvers. To this end, this paper proposes a new Lagrange-Newton-Krylov (LNK) method that targets the class of time-dependent nonlinear diffusion-reaction systems arising from chemical processes. The LNK solver combines a high order spectral Petrov-Galerkin (SPG) method with a new, parallel preconditioner tailored for the large-scale saddle-point systems that form subproblems of Sequential Quadratic Programming (SQP) methods. To establish proof-of-concept, a case study uses a simple parallel MATLAB implementation of the preconditioner with 10 cores. As a step towards real-time control, the results demonstrate that large-scale diffusion-reaction optimization problems with more than 106 unknowns can be solved efficiently in less than a minute.
