The integrated topology of shipboard power system has been more and more adopted in All Electric Ship design to benefit from the economic, technical and environmental advantages that it offers. Though, the resulting integrated shipboard power system becomes more heterogeneous and complex;making power system management a challenging task. This study presents an innovative approach for shipboard power system management of a cruiseferry. The power management combines both power production minimization and air-pollution limitation. The study focuses on the determination of the optimal operating plan of controllable power sources in addition to an adaptive ship speed control to adjust total power load. The optimization problem was formulated and implemented in the General Algebraic modeling System and it was solved using the Mixed Integer Non Linear Programming Solver.

Human-level performance in robotic systems remains elusive. Therefore, an important complementary approach to developing intelligent systems is to use design principles of the brain. One major design element is the combination of multiple behavioral controlsystems. Although hierarchical architectures have been used in robotics, they have not closely mimicked those of the primate brain (including humans). We are developing a model of cognitive and action control in the human brain that captures key findings from the cognitive neuroscience literature. Here, we focus on the classic detour problem that requires reaching around barriers. We demonstrate model performance in both simulation and with a humanoid robot and show with the simulations that all levels in the model contribute to successful reaching, provided that the agent's environment poses problems of varying complexity.

This paper presents a tracking controller for a long pneumatic transmission line modeled by a bidirectionally coupled system of partial differential equations (PDEs) and ordinary differential equations (ODEs). The feedforward part of the controller is designed by applying a flatness-based approach for hyperbolic PDEs to a second-order quasilinear model of the pneumatic system. The stabilizing feedback is derived by the application of a recently developed backstepping approach for coupled PDE-ODE systems to a different, more simple, linear model of the line. In simulations, the tracking controller is used to asymptotically stabilize a complex quasilinear third-order distributed parameter model of the pneumatic transmission line along a desired trajectory. This complex model has previously been shown to accurately reproduce the behavior of the pneumatic test bench considered.

The merging of IoT with industrial information is forming a new emerging direction of Industrial Internet of Things (I(2)oT). I(2)oT requires reliable methods for co-design of control and automation systems that can align their performance within deep and complex cyber layers of communication and computation. This paper investigates the utilization of hybrid control approach for modeling and analyzing distributed control of a quadruple-tank as a lab-scale benchmark process. The system is implemented via a software-defined architecture for I(2)oT using low-cost commercial IoT-enabled Intel Galileo Boards. The proposed I(2)oT software architecture utilizes *** and JavaScript for all different layers of the system with web sockets for handling real-time control packets. *** is considered reliable for event-driven scheme applications such as PDT due to its optimal performance and resource utilization.

The article substantiates the use of the resistance-acoustic method in problems of non-destructive testing of mechanical stresses or defects in structures of metals and alloys in natural and technical systems. The possibilities of the use of the proposed method for the potential monitored facilities were analyzed, to which the strict requirements for operational security are imposed (bearing reinforced concrete structures, bridges, radio and television towers, etc.). The main approaches to the development of the application methodology of the resistance-acoustic effect in solving the problems of technological control of mechanical stresses and defects in structures of metals and alloys are determined. The mathematical modeling was performed, using basic mathematical models of facilities of the resistance-acoustic control, considering the mutual influence of the elastic and electric fields in electrically conductive media, taking into consideration the parameters of technical state and wear.

Several technical and management disciplines are involved with complex system development and product life cycle management. Often they work in isolation leading to inconsistencies in product specifications, information, and challenges in decisionmaking. Differences across disciplines in their respective practices, techniques, tools, system metrics, and lack of a common platform for exchanging information have contributed to this gap. Attempts to bridge the gap between systems engineering and project management have been sought through project management methods and through imposing practices from one discipline onto another. It is proposed that a more rigorous approach to bridging this gap be investigated to better enable optimization of objectives, collaboration and cooperation amongst the multiple disciplines. The disciplines of interest in this study are plant modeling, systems engineering, and program management. In bridging the gap, both leveraging techniques and management tools from the different disciplines and adopting six sigma statistical methods are investigated. Common and unique system performance measurements are investigated in working toward a common language. Shared outcome-based measurements such as system and component operational capability levels, predicted and achieved, are also proposed. Options to bring together models from each discipline include multi-disciplinary system design optimization. The different management platforms and visualization techniques are explored with the goal to adopt a common platform to share information. The governance structure that would enable sharing of information across the disciplines forms part of this research.

The European Coordination Centre for Accident and Incident Reporting systems develops an information system for reporting aviation occurrences on the European scale. The system makes use of various taxonomies, like the taxonomy of event types, or a taxonomy of descriptive factors. However, the European Coordination Centre for Accident and Incident Reporting systems data model and associated taxonomies are complex and difficult to understand, which reduces interpretability of the records. In this paper, the problems European Coordination Centre for Accident and Incident Reporting systems users face during occurrence reporting are discussed, as well as subsequent searches in reported occurrences. Next, it is shown how proper conceptual modeling with ontological foundations could leverage the quality of occurrence categorization, and thus better exploitability of the European Coordination Centre for Accident and Incident Reporting systems system. The ontological model is demonstrated on the Aviation Vocabulary Explorer, which is a new prototypical tool for exploring European Coordination Centre for Accident and Incident Reporting systems.
