Underwater wireless sensor networks provide a new remote surveillance way to monitor the underwater environment, and have drawn increasing attention in the past few years from both academic and industry. Underwater sensor networks will find applications in oceanographic data collection, ocean sampling, pollution and environmental monitoring, offshore exploration, disaster prevention, assisted navigation, distributed tactical surveillance, mine reconnaissance, and submarine surveillance. Plenty of challenges have to be faced during the research, since the nature of underwater environment variable temporally and spatially In this paper, the efficient deployment of surface area for underwater wireless sensor networks was presented. To familiarize with underwater wireless sensor networks deployment, this paper started by providing background information on the architecture and trajectory of the sinking node. Then, a kind of novel inflatable sensor nodes was proposed to make sure that they can have a given trajectory, according to the analysis sinking process of the sensor nodes which tie to the anchor with winch. For a given target area, the reducing of surface deployment area and numbers of nodes is the most significant advantage. To illustrate the performance, the compare was made from two aspects.

To realize the efficient and stable real-time monitoring and intelligent management of the urban public lighting, the remote monitoring system is developed. The system is composed of monitoring center and monitoring terminals, and realizes network connection via the advanced remote wireless communication technology GPRS. It uses TI Company's MSP430 processor chip as the monitoring terminal controller, which integrates automatic control, data acquisition, communication and other technologies and has such functions as monitoring, remote control, anti-electricity theft, remote meter reading and communication. It's proved by practice that the designed controller features reliable running, sound real-time performance and low cost, and has a broad and bright application prospect. The monitoring and management of public lighting is a typical sector and important part of the civil work. Due to the continuous development of urban construction and ever-enlarging lighting coverage, the traditional lighting management methods can not realize centralized monitoring, have poor real-time performance and cost lots of human and material resources;thus, can not satisfy the requirements of energy saving and efficiency improvement[1]. GPRS (General Packet Radio Service), the wireless packet exchange technology based on the second generation mobile communication system GSM, is very suitable for transmitting non-continuous, unexpected and small sets of street lamp monitoring data. Also, quick & easy log-on, real-time online, high-speed transmission, sound economical efficiency and many other advantages make GPRS become the first choice for remote measurement and control system[2]. Therefore, the development of GPRS-based public lighting remote monitoring system becomes a necessity. A regenerative braking system, which could restore kinetic energy and potential energy to a battery or any other forms of power during braking, is a special system for electric and hybrid electric vehicles. However, the large current produced by the generator during braking would affect battery performance and shorten battery life. A hybrid-power system is an excellent energy storage system, in which an ultra-capacitor bank and a battery pack are connected together through a DC/DC power converter. And the ultra-capacitor in this system can store instantaneous large currents quickly, which is able to protect the battery from large currents. The application advantages of the hybrid-power system are analyzed in this paper, as well as a series control strategy for regenerative braking based on it. In order to verify the feasibility of the strategy, a braking force distribution model, which contains one S-Function, between mechanical and regenerative braking is built in MATLAB/Simulink by taking into account the ultra-capacitor voltage, the motor regenerative braking ability and other factors. Simulation results suggest that the ultra-capacitor is able to restore the regenerative energy very quickly, which will improve starting and acceleration performance, extend driving range, and increase fuel economy.

Experimental platform of free-air CO2 enrichment (FACE) was established in mid June of 2004 over a rice-wheat rotation ecosystem located at a suburb of Jiangdu, China. We compared the dynamics of soil neutral sugars from a wheat field with high (225.0 kg N/hm2) and low (112.5 kg N/hm2) levels of N fertilization exposed to the elevated and ambient CO2 after the wheat growing season in 2008. The results showed that soil glucose sugar accounted for the majority of total neutral sugars irrespective of elevated CO2 and N fertilization. Compared with the ambient treatments, elevated CO2 increased the amount of soil neutral sugars irrespectively of low N fertilization and high N fertilization, however, the difference was not significant. The ratios of (G+M)/(A+X) indicated that the origin of soil neutral sugars came from both plants and microbes. The elevated CO2 and N fertilization had no effects on the ratio of (G+M)/(A+X) (P >; 0.05).

Fluid flowing in ultra-low permeability reservoirs present non-linear characteristics. Based on the equivalent flowing resistance method and superposition principle with flowing field partition principle, non-Darcy flowing model of two phases for overall fracturing combined well pattern with fractured horizontal well and fractured vertical well is established with mutual interference between multi transverse fractures. It analyses the parameters influences of hydraulic fractured horizontal well on development effectiveness in different well patterns, in order to guide the development program design of overall fracturing. The simulated results indicated that the relationship between the horizontal length with the optimum number of cracks of fractured horizontal well is linear, and the optimal angle of fractured horizontal well and horizontal well bore within rectangular combined well pattern overall fracturing is 50°~80 °. The optimum hydraulic fracture conductivity in ultra-low permeability reservoirs is 10~15D·cm. The results also show that the equal arrangement of cracks along the horizontal well bore that longer cracks near the ends and shorter cracks in the middle is suggested as an optimal development way of fractured horizontal well.

The rising need of energy to improve the quality of life has paved the way for the development and the incentive of different kinds of renewable energy technologies. In particular, the recent increase in the number of installed PhotoVoltaic (PV) plants has boosted the marketing of new monitoring systems designed to take under control the energy production of PV plants. In this paper, we present an intelligent monitoring system, called SUNInspector, which resorts to spatio-temporal data mining techniques, in order to monitor energy productions of PV plants and detect real-time possible plant faults. SUNInspector uses spatio-temporal patterns, called trend clusters, to model the trends according to the energy production of the PV plants varies depending on the region where it is installed (spatial dependence) and the period of the year of the measurements (temporal dipendence). Each time a PV plant transmits its energy production measurement, the risk of a plant fault is measured by evaluating the persistence of an high difference between the real production and the expected production. A case study with PV plants distributed over the South of Italy is illustrated. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2012.

With today's competitive and complex environment which results from rapid industrial development, air quality monitoring is becoming a necessity. Devising devices that provide reliable, cost-effective, and fast monitoring of indoor/in-car harmful chemical compounds is of paramount importance for governments as well as individuals. Sensors array systems or commonly called electronic nose (E-nose) systems have been used in various fields of consumer applications. Owing to their versatility and ease of use, these systems can be an adequate alternative for indoor/in-car air quality monitoring. In this study a novel self-made and cost-effective electronic nose aiming at quantifying five indoor/in-car harmful gases (formaldehyde, benzene, CO, NO2, toluene), has been devised and implemented at the college of electronic and communication engineering of Chongqing University, China. A hybrid genetic algorithm support machine vector regression (GA-LSSVMR) model is used for pattern recognition and concentrations estimation. With absolute relative errors of prediction (MAREP) less than 10%, these models outperform those based on hybrid genetic algorithm back-propagation neural network regression (GA-BPNNR). Furthermore, the best regression models were embedded into the system for real-time concentration estimation, our system's predictions mostly agree with those of specific gas detectors. The product will therefore be a good alternative for indoor/in-car air quality monitoring.

This paper presents design strategies of using unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) to deploy wireless sensor networks (WSNs) for post-disaster monitoring. Natural disasters are unforeseeable events which cannot be prevented. But some recovery procedures can be followed to minimize their effects. Post-disaster monitoring is important to estimate the effects of disasters, which in turn is used to determine recovery procedures to be followed. We propose an UAV-aided unattended WSN deployment system. The system is a post-disaster solution which can be used anywhere required. In this study, we mainly evaluate the efficiency of localization and navigation performance of the proposed system. Our simulation studies with an AirRobot quadrotor helicopter in Unified System for Automation and Robot Simulation (USARSim) simulation platform show that UAVs can be used to deploy WSNs after disasters to monitor environmental conditions. Future work includes implementing the system using a hexarotor helicopter.

In this paper we describe a heterogeneous multi-robot system for assisting scientists in environmental monitoring tasks, such as the inspection of marine ecosystems. This team of robots is comprised of a fixed-wing aerial vehicle, an autonomous airboat, and an agile legged underwater robot. These robots interact with off-site scientists and operate in a hierarchical structure to autonomously collect visual footage of interesting underwater regions, from multiple scales and mediums. We discuss organizational and scheduling complexities associated with multi-robot experiments in a field robotics setting. We also present results from our field trials, where we demonstrated the use of this heterogeneous robot team to achieve multi-domain monitoring of coral reefs, based on real-time interaction with a remotely-located marine biologist. © 2012 IEEE.
