One booming concept that has recently gained significant attention in waste management is the "bioreactor landfill". Despite the potential benefits of operating landfills as bioreactors, there are no standardized operational guidelines and procedures for the system due to the numerous processes and site-specific variables involved. This paper introduces an innovative technology that employs automated monitoring and expert control in the operation of bioreactor landfills. The proposed control system combines multiple interacting hardware and software components, and is coined as SMART (Sensor-based monitoring and Remote-control Technology). SMART features a fuzzy logic decision engine that mimics the control actions of an experienced human operator. This technology aims to provide optimum conditions for the biodegradation of municipal solid waste, and also, to improve the profitability of the bioreactor landfill in terms of biogas production and space recovery.

This paper is based on the "National Elaborate Course Integration Project", aiming to monitoring the service status of distributed elaborate course web servers across the nation. An evaluation index,system is developed and a comprehensive evaluation method is applied to evaluate the web server's connectivity. This paper also proposes a monitoring strategy management method to optimize the regular monitoring. Detailed system design and historical implementation results are provided to, prove the feasibility and effectiveness of the system.

The purpose of this study was to examine the photocatalytic degradation of real effluents from wheat straw pulp and paper mill by nano-Fe2O 3 catalyst. Four different ferric oxide samples were synthesized by homogeneous precipitation of reflux at different drying and calcination conditions. The most active catalyst was characterized and used as catalyst in photocatalytic degradation process. The effect of key parameters including catalyst dose, solution pH, oxidant concentration were investigated. The results showed UV light alone played a little role in the degradation of wastewater in a short time and the presence of Fe2O3 could greatly promote the degradation of wastewater. The degradation of wastewater was favorable at pH 3. Optimum values of catalyst dose and oxidant concentration was found to be 1 g L-1 and 5 % (v/v), respectively. Under the optimum condition, the removal rate of COD reached 93.1% under ultraviolet irradiation for 3 h. Satisfactory results suggested the effectiveness of the heterogeneous photocatalytic system of Fe2O3/UV/H2O 2 in eliminating COD of paper mill effluent. The COD of effluent was in the range of the acceptable values of the latest China Government standards. © 2011 IEEE.

This paper introduces a type of control and test system for internal combustion engine based on Serial bus and virtual instrument technique. It consists of host and intelligent node, with parameter signals communication through RS485 serial bus to form a distributed high-precision status parameters controlling testing system. The host computer implements the user interaction, data storage, status monitoring, power measurement and computation as well as management. The client unit reads the commands of host, controls the rotation speed of engine and excitation current, detects all the parameters of system and transmits the data. The hardware and software structure of the distributed testing system (client) with ATmega128 micro single chip computer and communication module are implemented. And the application software was developed with graphical virtual instrument language LabVIEW. The solution may have some reference value to the design of other internal combustion monitoring system with other control bus and the development of general single chip microcomputer and industrial field monitoring and controlling system.

The world trend is that the monitoring, intelligent control and systematic management to the instruments and equipments are integrated both on bridge and in engine room in ship automation. The design scheme of the ship integrated monitoring and operating system based on two layers distributed and redundant computer network was presented in this paper. The distributed schemes are fully applied to both software and hardware. The composition, software distribution and redundant technology in the upper local network were described, some important sample codes was given to prove the design and can be realized. The technologies here can be applied in the other industrial fields. ©2011 IEEE.

A series of the Pb5(PxAs1-xO 4)3Cl solid solutions were directly prepared through aqueous precipitation method. The results of the elemental analysis, XRD, FT-IR and SEM characterization have confirmed the forming of the mimetite/pyromorphite solid solutions. The XRD analysis indicated that the end-member components of the solid solutions were well matched respectively to card #01-080-2103 for mimetite and #00-019-0701 for pyromorphite, and their corresponding unit cell parameters. In FT-IR spectra, the stretching vibrational absorption band of AsO43- appeared around 788.71-820.00 cm-1 (γ3), and the bending vibration absorption band was also visible at 418.00cm-1 (γ4). In addition, no vibrations of AsO43- appeared at 1407.82 cm-1, 1563.44 cm-1 and 1733.26 cm-1. There was a clear water peak of pyromorphite appeared at 3440.62 cm-1 and the antisymmetric stretching peak of PO43- appeared around 979.50-1050.05 cm-1 (γ3) and the symmetrical peak appeared around 540.08-575.53 cm-1 (γ4). Observed by SEM, the shape of crystals changed gradually from the fibrous, needle-like to the granular solid block as PO43- in the solids increased. © 2011 IEEE.

Domestic sewage was treated with subsurface wastewater infiltration system covered by two different turfgrass,namely, Festuca aroundinaces Schres and Zoysia japonica Steud to study the removal effects of N and P. The result show that TN concentration of Festuca aroundinaces Schres varied from 46.8 to 52.7 g•kg-1 and it was significantly higher than that of Zoysia japonica Steud. The TP concentration of Festuca aroundinaces Schres varied from 4.64 to 5.89 g • kg-1 and there were no prominent differences between the two turfgrass. The average nitrogen amount taken out by Festuca aroundinaces Schres are 0.237g•m-2•d-1, 0.180 g•m-2•d-1 and 0.118 g•m-2•d -1 in different month which are significantly higher than that of Zoysia japonica Steud. The nitrogen removal rates of Festuca aroundinaces Schres clippings are 21.4%, 13.1% and 11.8% in September, November and December respectively. The average phosphorous amount taken out by Festuca aroundinaces Schres are 23.4 mg •m-2 • d-1, 15.1 mg •m-2 • d-1 and 13.8 mg•m -2•d-1 in different month which are significantly higher than that of Zoysia japonica Steud. The phosphorous removal rates of Festuca aroundinaces Schres clippings are 30.2%, 24.4% and 22.4% in September, October and November respectively. © 2011 IEEE.

Sohar Industrial region in the Sultanate of Oman has been developing rapidly in the past few years. It includes different types of downstream, petrochemical, aluminum, power, and steel industries. This development has already had a significant impact on the national income as well as on the region's development. However, such industries can also have negative impacts on the environment, resulting from the emission of pollution from the factories. More effective environmental pollution control and management are needed, due to the increasing environmental impacts from a range of activities and the growing demands for a better living environment. Air pollution is a serious environmental issue that poses adverse impacts on the health of people and on the natural environment in most metropolitan areas. In this paper, we propose a geoinformatics-augmented framework of environmental modeling and information sharing for supporting effective air pollution control and management. This framework is outlined in terms of its key components and processes including: 1) an integrated, adaptive network of sensors for environmental monitoring;2) a set of distributed, interoperable databases for data management;3) a set of intelligent, robust algorithms and models for environmental modeling;4) a set of flexible, efficient user interfaces for data access and information sharing;and 5) a reliable, high capacity, high performance computing and communication infrastructure for integrating and supporting other framework components and processes. © 2011 IADIS.

Indoor environmental pollution is closely related with people's health. In this paper, economic evaluation model was made by fuzzy mathematics. Economic lose for every given indoor environment could be calculated by this model. It provided a clear concept of pollution in the form of money to people and supplied corresponding science knowledge to related monitoring and administrative department.
