This book constitutes the proceedings of the First international ICST conference, S-CUBE 2009, held in Pisa, Italy, in september 2009. The 16 contributions published in this volume were carefully selected from 45 submitted works in a rigorous peer-reviewed process. In addition to this 3 distinguished researchers were asked to contribute 3 invited papers. The papers examine research challenges facing system development and software support for wireless sensor networks (WSNs). Currently, wireless sensor networks introduce innovative and interesting application scenarios that may support a large amount of different applications including environmentalmonitoring, disaster prevention, building automation, object tracking, nuclear reactor control, fire detection, agriculture, healthcare, and traffic monitoring. The widespread acceptance of these new services can be improved by the definition of frameworks and architectures that have the potential to radically simplify software development for wireless sensor network based applications. The aim of these new architectures is to support flexible, scalable programming of applications based on adaptive middleware. As a consequence, WSNs require novel programming paradigms and technologies. Moreover the design of new complex systems, characterized by the interaction of different and heterogeneous resources, will allow the development of innovative applications that meet high performance goals. Hence, WSNs require contributions from many fields such as embedded systems, distributed systems, data management, system security and applications.

A intelligent monitor and control system on multi-factor of aquaculture environment based on wireless sensor networks is designed adopting BP neural networks. The system uses wireless sensor nodes to detect a variety of water quality parameters transmitted to the on-site monitoring host computer through sink node wirelessly. The paper presents a new system used for starting the diesel engine of the LDH1250HP locomotive, for improving its performances, reliability and availability. The system developed uses rapid release storage devices, a power electronic unit and a computer linked with all the distributed system elements, by using Ethernet bus. Also, the paper describes an intelligent data acquisition system integrated with the starting system and developed to monitor the electrical parameters of the LDH1250HP locomotive. The proposed monitoring system allows evaluating the electrical locomotive parameters and the overall system performances. The details of implementation and the experimental results are also presented. The technical implementation allows a significant reduction of exploitation cost and carbon footprint of the locomotive.

Every country was conscious of the energy of earth was almost consumption danger, thus they positively developed the new energy of next generation such nuclear energy, wind-power generator, solar energy, biologic energy etc. Among those methods nuclear energy was the better strategy for producing energy for its economical benefits, but it would generate large amount emission of CO2, and finally leading to second pollution and ozonosphere broken to form greenhouse effect and cause gradual ecological damage. That's why all countries again developed all possible methods to conserve energy and decrease CO2 emission and that meant not only regarded energy develop but also energy conserved. This research was mainly to meet with the government policy of energy saving which was positively promoted by Energy Bureau of Taiwan Economy Department and to use all brand-new technology of sensor and communication techniques to construct active intelligent energy-conserved system which was designed on the conception of module to correspond to different energy consumption condition. In this system "active" meant the system with auto-sensor and monitoringcontrol techniques would detect the energy consumption conditions both in environmental factors and power system in addition to feedback control with optimal operating parameters such as voltage, current, power factor, harmony-wave factor that was arranged with intelligent agent technique.
