In this paper, an algorithm of coverage control is introduced for three-dimensional underwater wireless sensor networks based on uniform deployment on surface which is suitable for water environment monitoring of wetland. Sensor nodes are uniformly deployed on surface of monitoring waters with equal interval. After deployment, sensors are lowered to appropriate depths selected by the distributed algorithm such that the maximum three-dimensional coverage of underwater sensor space is maintained. For the maximization of comprehensive index composed of coverage and average distance, simulation results reveal that our scheme outperforms two- and one-dimensional random deployment and depth random deployment under different network scale.

Wireless sensor networks are increasingly being used in environmental monitoring applications. Collecting raw data from these networks can lead to excessive energy consumption. This is especially true when the application requires specialized sensors that have very high energy consumption, e.g. hydrological sensors for monitoring marine environments. We describe an adaptive sensor sampling scheme where nodes change their sampling frequencies autonomously based on the variability of the measured parameters. The sampling scheme also meets the user's sensing coverage requirements by using information provided by the underlying MAC protocol. This allows the scheme to automatically adapt to topology changes. Our results based on real and synthetic data sets, indicate a reduction in sensor sampling by up to 93%, reduction in message transmissions by up to 99% and overall energy savings of up to 87%. We also show that generally more than 90% of the collected readings fall within the user-defined error threshold.

An important design challenge in wireless sensor network application development is to provide appropriate middleware service protocols to control the energy consumption according to specific application scenarios. In common application scenarios such as in surveillance systems, it is usually necessary to extend the system monitoring area as large as possible to cover the maximal area. The two issues of power conservation and maximizing the coverage area have to be considered together with both the sensors' communication connectivity and their power management strategy. In this work, we proposed an enhanced sensor scheduling protocol to address the application scenario of typical surveillance systems. Our protocol takes into consideration of both power conservation and coverage ratio to search for the balance between the different requirements. We proposed both centralized and de-centralized versions of sensor scheduling protocol, and compared the performance of different protocols using several metrics. The results provide evidence of the advantages of the proposed protocol compared with existing sensor scheduling protocols. © 2008 IEEE.

Two convincing paradigms have emerged for achieving scalability in widely distributed systems: publish/subscribe communication and role-based, policy-driven control of access to the system by applications. A strength of publish/subscribe is its many-to-many communication paradigm and loose coupling of components, so that publishers need not know the recipients of their data and subscribers need not know the number and location of publishers. But some data is sensitive, and its visibility must be controlled carefully for personal and legal reasons. We describe the requirements of several application domains where the event-based paradigm is appropriate yet where security is an issue. Typical are the large-scale systems required by government and public bodies for domains such as healthcare, police, transport and environmental monitoring. We discuss how a publish/subscribe service can be secured;firstly by specifying and enforcing access control policy at the service API, and secondly by enforcing the security and privacy aspects of these policies within the service network itself. Finally, we describe an alternative to whole-message encryption, appropriate for highly sensitive and long-lived data destined for specific domains with varied requirements. We outline our investigations and findings from several research projects in these areas. Copyright 2008 ACM.

In the course of rubber conveyer production, in order to solve such effect on speed and accuracy, which is made by all kinds of materials' different properties, such as: power's humidity, liquid materials' clinical and the stability of the weighting system. This paper introduces distributed control system, which is composed of industrial control computer and programmable controller, and "the four steps weighting method" and "parameter adaptive fuzzy PID frequency conversion control technique", which are used to realize rapidly and accrately weighing. Practice proves that this hardware system and software algorithm are effetive and have a good potential of popularization and application.

Micro cogeneration technology (micro-CHP) is expected to be an important novel residential heating technology for the future in certain countries around the world. The interesting aspect of micro-CHP is that it is a controllable distributed generation technology. This paper provides novel conceptual insight into how micro-CHP systems can be controlled aggregatedly in virtual power plants (VPPs). Cost benefits for VPPs can be achieved through 'economies of intelligence' with the help of intelligent control schemes.

Different types of sensors are used to control and monitor complex systems in many applications, where the environmental parameters, e.g., temperature, humidity, etc., undergo large variations. In such conditions, the sensor's output may be erroneous and the system being controlled may malfunction. The need of intelligent sensors arise in such situations. These sensors should be capable of compensating for the adverse effects of the environmental conditions on the sensor output and linearization of sensor response, in order to provide correct readout. In this paper, we propose a novel computationally efficient Legendre functional-link artificial neural network (L-FLANN) to develop a smart sensor that can compensate for the adverse effects of the environmental conditions. By taking two types of environmental models and a pressure sensor, we have shown with extensive computer simulations that the proposed smart sensor is computationally efficient with respect to a multi-layer perceptron (MLP)-based sensor model and capable of satisfactory linearization of sensor output. This smart sensor produces only plusmn0.5% full-scale error between the actual and estimated output for the two selected environmental models under a temperature variation of -50 to 200degC.

Remote control and monitoring are very necessary in decentralized manufacturing environments. This is evidenced by todaypsilas distributed shop floors where agility and responsiveness are required to maintain high productivity and flexibility. However, there exists a lack of an effective system architecture that integrates remote condition monitoring and control of automated equipment; that give much consideration about the Internet data transfer time delay. This paper presented an Internet-based and sensor-driven architecture, which can guarantee the non-distortion-transfer of control information and reduce the action time difference between local simulated virtual robot and remote real robot, couple the remote monitoring and control together. For demonstrate and validate the architectural design, a 3 DOF industry robot remote operation and monitoring system has been developed. Experimental results are encouraging and demonstrate a promising application in advanced intelligent manufacturing environment.

According to the international Energy Agency (IEA) the worldpsilas energy needs would be well over 50% higher in 2030 than today at an average annual rate of 1.8% per year. Modern Information Technology based Supervisory control and Data Acquisition Systems (SCADA) assume greater significance in this context to derive maximum efficiency in power plant operations by ensuring optimal use of available resources. In this paper, we present the salient features of scalable, distributed intelligent SCADA System developed by Centre for Development of Advanced Computing, Thiruvananthapuram and being implemented in a chain of hydel power stations along the Teesta canal in West Bengal. Besides individual plant monitoring and control, the system facilitates co-ordinated remote monitoring and control of three power stations and their associated canal water flow from a central station. The building blocks of our SCADA technology are well proven in Steel plants, Thermal power plants, Power Distribution Automation Systems, Water treatment plants and other Process industries and Transportation systems. The overall philosophy for system development and implementation is one of distributed structure with redundancy built in at all levels. Advanced Human Machine Interface on modern computer systems, intelligent Process controllers, distributed control Nodes over the field bus and the plant optimization models depict the superiority of the system. Hydel specific optimization modules are implemented to identify and predict in advance the leakage in fluid flow circuits, in order to take counter measures at the appropriate instants. The system tries to utilize optimally the water flow in the canal for maximum power generation from the plants. The implemented system architecture provides a progressive path of adaptive migration to tomorrow's advanced Automation Systems Technology. After the SCADA system implementation, Power Stations -I, II & III has achieved an increase in power generation

Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) have promised us a new monitor and control model over the distributed computing environment. In general, these networks consist of a large number of sensor nodes densely distributed over the region of interest for collecting information or monitor & track certain specific phenomena from the physical environment. Network management in WSNs becomes extremely important and vital in order to keep the whole network and application work properly. Until now there still doesn't emerge a considerable, common agreed network management solution for WSN. This paper summarizes the uniqueness of network management protocol for WSN, provide an overview analysis of several current existed protocols, so as to find out and summarize their advantage and disadvantage, and provide some directions for the future research of network management protocol in WSN.
