Ageing societies raise new social and economic challenges which are expected to be partially solved by the use of advanced technology. Ambient home care systems (AHCS) aims at alleviating both elderly and caregivers daily tasks, thanks to their control of environmental, health and physical sensors and their capability of reasoning on the acquired information. In this paper, we design and develop a prototype of an AHCS using and adapting an open software framework, the context toolkit (CTK). The CTK here is customized to handle our proper acquisition platform. On our work, we infer some conclusions about design practices and context management for AHCS.

PM-10 is one of major air pollutants which affect on human health. Since PM-10 comes from various emission sources and its level of concentration is largely dependent on meteorological and geographical factors of the local region, the forecasting of PM-10 concentration is of great interest to protect daily human health. In this study, the dependent variables on PM-10 concentration were derived from the correlation analysis between PM-10 and meteorological as well as environmental factors based on the observations at the monitoring stations. Using the potential variables on the PM-10 level, the neural network model was developed and tested. The root mean square errors of the prediction in test runs were 0.064 to 0.077 and the test results implied that the system could be used in real forecasting within 10% error rates.

Node localization is a fundamental requirement for deploying real wireless sensor network applications such as hospital logistics, environmental monitoring, and target surveillance. However, recently proposed algorithms still could not attain enough accuracy and are too costly. To improve the previous work, we describe a low cost, high accuracy, scalable, distributed localization algorithm which based on distance vectors. We assume that only few sensor nodes have known-locations (named as beacons) and the remaining nodes have unknown-locations (named as normal nodes). Each node updates its location from currently estimated distance vectors and given pairwise distances which are derived from received signal strength (RSS) measurements or time of arrival (TOA), and then passes this new location to neighbors until achieving enough convergence. Analysis, simulation and experimental results show that the proposed algorithm outperforms the other range-based algorithms. Specially the proposed algorithm on real-world experiment measurements, which contain unpredictable noise and shadowing, achieves better accuracy than the previous work do. The proposed method can perform well even with only few reference devices or anchors.

Traditional access control disciplines such as RBAC has difficulty in covering open and decentralized multi-centric systems because it has focused on a closed system where all users are known and primarily utilizes a server-side reference monitor within the system. Trust management has relaxed this known user restriction and allowed authorize for strangers based on their credentials. However, trust management has also been found to be lacking because of certain inherent drawbacks with the notion of credential. In this work, a new access control model T&RBAC is presented in this paper. It integrates RBAC and TM. User can be assigned to local roles, also can be assigned to foreign roles based on his credential and local roles. We proof that there is no security constraints in T&RBAC. To some extends, T&RBAC is only a core model and can be extended for specific requirement.

There are two types of generalized particle models (GPM) that can be used to allocate network bandwidth efficiently. One is the ¿original¿ generalized particle models (OGPM) with which the allocation is not changed until the price reaches equilibrium. The other one is the economic generalized particle model (EGPM), where the allocation is changed dynamically even when the allocation is being calculated. EGPM therefore suits bandwidth allocation in dynamic environments. The two models can be classified as evolutionary intelligent swarm optimization approaches. The EGPM is an important extension and further development of the OGPM, which comprises two major components: (1) dynamic allocation of network bandwidth based on GPM; and (2) dynamic modulation of price and demands of network bandwidth. The two components combined can be readily implemented by a distributed algorithm. In this paper, by simulations, we compare EGPM and OGPM, and then with the ant colony optimization approach, the utility function algorithm, and the max-min fairness algorithm.

Adding self-healing capabilities to network management systems holds great promise for delivering important goals, such as QoS, while simultaneously lowering capital expenditure, operation cost, and maintenance cost. In this paper, we present a model-based approach to add self-healing capabilities to a fault management system for cellular networks. We propose a generic modeling framework to categorize software failures and specify their dispositions at the model level for the target system. This facilitates the deployment of a control loop for adding autonomic capabilities into the system architecture, which include self-monitoring, self-healing, and self-adjusting functionality. While self- monitoring oversees the environmental conditions and system behavior, self-healing is accomplished by instrumenting the system with self-adjusting operations. We include a case study on a prototype intelligent network fault management system to illustrate this approach by showing how these autonomic capabilities can be added and deployed. Specifically, these autonomic capabilities are derived from self-model specifications, and are used to mitigate the risk of specified failures and maintain the health of the system in response to different types of faults encountered.

Security is an important issue in sensor networks. Many applications in military, distributed information gathering etc., demand for secure group communication (SGC) in sensor networks. The SGC requires common network-wide group key for confidentiality of control messages and data reports. The group key should be updated when a node is compromised. In this paper we propose a new key management scheme for group key computation and distribution which is based on tree structure. The proposed scheme minimizes storage as well as communication and computation cost of end user (i.e., sensor nodes). The complex encryption/decryption operations used to distribute new group key whenever a node is compromised are replaced by one way hash functions and simple XOR operations.

Policy-based management has emerged as a promising solution for the management of large-scale and heterogeneous networks, since it can reduce complexity in management applications. Meanwhile, one of the key challenges is to may require adaptation of existing policies to dynamic and distributed circumstances. Thus, policies themselves need to be managed and adapted. Modal policy management framework (MPMF) is proposed to supports collaborative management operations and dynamic adaptation of policy in response to changes within the managed environment. A large scale distributed management system is divided into many management domains to autonomous management. Global state view is acquired through resource pool and the corresponding triggering update mechanism. A modal logic-based policy definition language and its syntax are defined, which can be used to describe system's goal and decision functions. Finally, the monitoring and management model is presented to show that MPMF can meet the requirements of management of distributed systems.

Large scientific computing clusters require a distributed dependability subsystem that can provide fault isolation and recovery and is capable of learning and predicting failures, to improve the reliability of scientific workflows. In this paper, we outline the key ideas in the design of a Scientific Computing Autonomic Reliability Framework (SCARF) for large computing clusters used in the Lattice Quantum Chromo Dynamics project at Fermi Lab.

Sensor web which is called new trend of nowadays, the development of wireless network environment and minimization of sensor make practical monitoring on physical environment possible. Sensor is being a clear technical trend which autonomously senses increase of usefulness on access of wireless and mobile network, and distributed network. Therefore, Web-service which is about sensor network including data management of sensor network is being a noticeable part of study. As a result, this paper designs USN-based mobile sensor Web service framework for environment monitoring in a standard protocol of mobile Web service based mobile environment. The proposed technology on this paper not only search Web of variable types, sensor, sensor data storage but also is possible to access and control through world wide Web.
