In recent years, several structures have been equipped with permanent monitoring systems, able to record the response both in terms of displacements and strains over very long periods of time and, theoretically, for the entire life of the structure. Despite of the number of applications, very few studies have been presented aimed at interpreting the data and providing a means for detecting and localizing the insurgence of damage or material degradation from the measurements. The paper describes the features of typical data flows produced by a continuous static monitoring system and provides an approach to an algorithmic treatment of these data. The discussion will be based on data obtained by means of a computer simulation of a typical bridge structure subjected to environmental loadings. The application of some algorithms will also be discussed, showing advantages and disadvantages of the proposed approaches. A multi-algorithm procedure is finally proposed.

Large scale robotic teams are capable of working independently or cooperatively to carry out a variety of missions. However, for large teams of robots to function for extended periods of time, the individual members of a team must be able to generate or find energy to re-supply themselves. One approach to providing power for a robotic team is to couple larger systems with significant energy reserves so that the smaller systems can be recharged directly from the larger. This paper presents an implementation of such an approach. Here, a modular docking station is given locomotion through the cooperation of two larger robots. The docking station is capable of transporting, deploying, retrieving, and recharging many smaller robots. The kinematic model which will govern the cooperation of the maneuvering robots and will be used to develop control is presented and discussed. The design of the individual bays of the docking station and how they facilitate the deployment, recovery, and recharge of the smaller robots is also presented. The development of this system makes possible a number of applications, including autonomous long-term environmentalmonitoring and reconnaissance in various locations.

In order to reduce carbon emissions to tackle climate change, it is becoming increasingly important to improve energy efficiency through more intelligent and sustainable building design. This paper describes the design and environmental performance of the Lanchester Library at Coventry University, which opened in September 2000 and incorporates natural ventilation, daylighting and passive cooling strategies. computer simulations used in the design phase demonstrated that comfortable indoor conditions could be maintained with a natural ventilation strategy which uses lightwells and perimeter stacks to supply and exhaust air, and careful control of solar gains and night time cooling, avoiding the use of air conditioning or mechanical ventilation. This paper uses data from the Building Energy Management System (BEMS) to assess how well the building is performing 5 years on. Temperature, CO2 and energy consumption data are used to give indications of building performance, and for comparison with the original design criteria and good practice guidelines. The data indicate that comfortable thermal conditions and a sufficient supply of fresh air are maintained in the library throughout the year and that it consumes 50% less energy than a standard air conditioned building.

The model of integration of distributed knowledge resources in monitoring system is proposed. It is assumed that agent's knowledge about the states of objects is represented by the graded profiles. The procedure of data integration is given and the algorithm for semantic knowledge integration is introduced including solving conflicts of inconsistent data.
