The revolution of Internet brings new security risk like attacks against networks. distributed denial of service shows such feature clearly. Existing attack defense approaches, such as intrusion detection systems, are passive in response against various network attacks; because current attacks are decentralized, automated and intelligent. Some drawbacks of existing systems reveal the necessity of designing a new generation of systems adapted to dynamical environment. Classical security solutions can not easily deal with these necessities. Active networks approach provides interesting characteristics; it is a novel approach that gives networks and services flexibility and spontaneity. With an active network in place, we can build a more active and dynamic attack response by pushing the response actions nearby the attacker, where they can produce better results

In the field of intelligent systems, research and design approaches vary from predefined architectures to self-organizing systems. Regardless of the architectural approach, such systems may grow in size and complexity to levels where the capacities of people are strongly challenged. Such systems are commonly researched, designed and developed following several methods and with the help of a variety of software tools. In this paper we want to describe our research and development environment. It is composed of a set of tools that support our research and enable us to develop large scale intelligent systems used in our robots and in our test platforms. The main parts of our research and development environment are: the component models BBCM (brain bytes component model) and BBDM (brain bytes data model), the middleware RTBOS (real-time brain operating system), the monitoring system CMBOS (control-monitor brain operating system) and the design environment DTBOS (design tool for brain operating system). We will compare our research and development environment with others available on the market or still in research phase and we will describe some of our experiments

In this paper the authors propose an intelligent and stand-alone measurement instrument for environmental monitoring and control applications. By an embedded computational intelligence technique, the instrument can acquire and test data according to available information. The projected system consists in a smart Web-sensor sensing the electromagnetic field exposure levels. The sensor equipment includes an isotropic magnetic field transducer, a GPRS modem, a DSP platform and an interface display. In details, the realized measurement system is able to process acquired signals by performing mathematical algorithms in order to verify the conformity with the law exposure limits and to characterize possible alarm occurrences. The data processing stage is qualified by a further power-spectrum analysis, that allows to get information in the frequency domain on the electromagnetic field spectral components. Information regarding the operating status of sensor is stored in an internal embedded memory, so keeping trace on its metrological characterization. In this way the built-in knowledge on the integrity of acquired data is used to guarantee the reliability of the computational process

intelligent tutoring systems (ITS) provide the benefits of one-on-one instruction in an automatic way and cost effectively, keeping in mind their multidisciplinary nature. The development of an ITS is often criticized for being a complex and challenging process as individual students' needs change and often they do not realize that they need help. Consequently, such a system must be capable of dynamically adapting and monitoring each student, developing a model of their knowledge, skills and expertise. Based on the learner student model, an ITS must present instructional strategies in terms of both the content and the style, and provides explanations and practice problems as needed. The advances in the development of the computer technologies has facilitated the use and design of ITS. Nevertheless, ITS research progress has been impeded by the lack of modular system architectures, reusable components and sharable knowledge bases. Each new research or development effort typically starts from scratch, without a foundation on which to build. In this paper some of the actual limiting problems of the ITS are studied. The main contribution of this work is resumed in a proposed framework. The framework incorporates a knowledge base where data and knowledge related to the problem are maintained and a model related to the student, teaching and environmental issues together with pedagogical perspectives. We consider in the ITS context the agents' technology for address issues of modularity and reusability; and Case-Based Reasoning to store students' interactions and feedback with the ITS, in order to maintain past memory experiences and then derive new paths for teaching.

Development in micro-electronic-mechanical systems (MEMS), wireless communications and digital electronics recently have made it possible to develop small size, low-power, low-cost sensor devices. Such devices can integrate data processing, communications and sensing capabilities. A wireless sensor network (WSN) consists of a group of sensors, or nodes, linked by a wireless medium (infrared or radio frequency) to perform distributed sensing tasks. Wireless sensor networks have many applications such as surveillance, environmental monitoring, security, and medical sampling. Many successful sensor applications have been deployed in very specialized networks, such as UCBerkeley's smart dust (J.M. Khan, 1999), MIT's mu-adaptive multidomain power aware sensors (http://***/research/icsystems/uamps/), and UCLA's wireless integrated sensor networks (http://***/WINS/). Sleep apnea is a very common disorder that affects millions of Americans, which is characterized by brief interruptions of breathing during sleep. The goal of this project is to develop a wireless system capable of recording from a large number of electrodes (map human bodies' biopotentials) to diagnose the disorders of sleep apnea. This research focuses on: (1) developing an application program for a project called "sleep apnea biopotential imager" based on crossbow sensor network product (http://***); (2) quantifying performance of this project

A distributed processing and communication approach is applied to networked surveillance systems providing an extended perception and sensing capability in monitored environments. By pervasive we mean that the entire surveyed area is covered by a heterogeneous collection of fixed and mobile sensors. The sensor network uses a cooperative tracking technique that allows for the deployment of mobile sensors based on data provided by other sensors in the network. Also, an image-based tracking technique is used for tracking when the target is in view. The task of tracking multiple targets in a distributed surveillance network is a challenging problem because of the following reasons: (1) multiple targets need to be monitored and tracked continuously and must remain in view of at least one of the sensors; (2) the view of the sensors needs to be optimized so that the targets are observed with a discernible resolution for feature identification; (3) it is important to devise stable control algorithms for accomplishing the surveillance task; (4) assigning tracking tasks to sensors must consider load balancing and efficient use of all sensors. This paper presents a distributed communication and processing model that allows for a fast deployment of sensor nodes and implementation of ad hoc tracking in a multi-target surveillance scenario. Also, experimental results demonstrate the efficacy of the proposed approach for tracking multiple targets over a large area with fixed and mobile sensors

The exponential computational cost involved in traditional data mining methods enforces search for less complex new algorithms. Especially, data mining on grid is a challenge due to the lack of shared memory in grid computing, which puts special attention to communication optimization. The aim of the DisDaMin project (distributed data mining), described in the paper, is solving data mining problems by using new distributed algorithms intented for execution in grid environments. The DisDaMin implements intelligent fragmentation of data by clustering methods and asynchronous collaborative processing adjusted to grid environments. The DG-ADAJ environment provides adaptive control of distributed applications written in Java for desktop grid. It constitutes a component-based middleware, which allows for optimized distribution of applications on clusters of Java virtual machines, monitoring of application execution and dynamic online balancing of processing and communication. The DG-ADAJ system provides a middleware platform for desktop grid that could be used as a deployment base for DisDaMin algorithms. In this paper, we propose static object placement optimization algorithms for fragmentation of data in the DisDaMin project. The algorithms use DG-ADAJ's object clustering methods to provide optimized local processing on each node with minimized inter-node communication

Structural health monitoring (SHM) is a wellestablished multi-disciplinary research field, in which the goal is to develop technologies and techniques to automatically detect, localize, and classify damage in large structures. This paper is focused, starting with a simple SHM problem and a simple structure, on how wireless sensor networking technologies can help advance SHM. Specifically, a distributed damage detection algorithm is developed based on shifted spectra of réponse at the sensor nodes. While damage detection using frequency shifts is fairly well-understood in the SHM community, the development here adheres to sensor network architectural principles: the technique is amenable to in-network processing and duty-cycling, and can be implemented on a long-running sensor network. The efficacy is demonstrated using simulations on structural models, and actual measurements on real, albeit simple, structures. ©2005 IEEE.

This paper presents a hierarchical stabilization control system with a multi-agent based upper level stabilization controller and a lower level local stabilization controller. Two types of intelligent agents are proposed to realize the proposed upper level stabilization controller: a monitoring agent for gathering required information to stabilize the target power system and a stabilization control agent(supervisor) which performs the actual stabilization control on the selected device. All the required information is distributed through computer networks. The lower level stabilization controller utilizes only local information monitored at the site of the controlled device. Whenever interferences of computer networks happen, the multi-agent based stabilization controller is not able to continue the proper control action to stabilize the target power system. Therefore, under such circumstances the control system is switched to the lower level local stabilization controller to continue the stabilization control. To demonstrate the efficiency of the proposed hierarchical stabilization control scheme, experimental studies have been performed on a 5kVA laboratory system with the Energy Capacitor System as an Energy Storage Device for the stabilization control. © 2005 ISAP.

As a key unit with textile coil process technology, spinning-machine's spindles composes of a braking switch, a three-phase current motor, rolling bearings and a rotary cup. Aiming at on line monitoring and fault diagnosis, a distributed monitoring system was proposed for real-time data collection and high-speed transmission. In this system, an IPC worked as an upper deck computer and many single chip processors served as bottom controllers that working status data collection and transmission can be conveniently conducted. With the features of bulk processing data and large quantities of controlled nodal points in a workshop condition, the distributed monitoring system was developed with adoption of particular approaches such as a distributed configuration with PCI bus for real time data collection and highspeed transmission, logic compression algorithm for data processing, etc. Therefore this system realizes reliable and high-speed bulk data collection, transmission and processing to meet needs of real-time monitor and control of spindle units.
