Wireless sensor networks consist of large number of low power devices equipped with RF links for communication that have several military, civil and environmental monitoring applications. The energy constraints due to limited battery power present numerous design challenges. In this paper we propose an energy efficient, cluster based framework for collaboration among nodes in a region for reducing the redundancy in reporting events. Collaboration is done among the exposed nodes using a localized and deterministic schedule based on TDMA/FDMA MAC A novel, three phase collaboration scheme is presented to exchange messages for determining the local maximum of the confidence measure in the two hop cluster neighborhood of the event. This local maximum generates the response for the event, thereby reducing the redundant reporting of the event. Through extensive simulations we have shown that there is a significant reduction in the overall network traffic thereby, saving energy at the nodes responsible for originating response traffic and also at nodes which handle the route-through traffic.

This paper presents a novel approach and a framework for web-based systems that can be used in distributed manufacturing environments. A prototype is developed to demonstrate its application to remote monitoring and control of a Tripod-one type of parallel kinematic machine. It utilizes the latest Java technologies (Java 3D and Java Servlets) as enabling technologies for system implementation. Instead of using a camera for monitoring, the Tripod is modeled using Java 3D with behavioral control nodes embedded. Once downloaded from its server, the 3D model behaves in the same way of its counterpart at client side. It remains alive by connecting with the Tripod through message passing, e.g., sensor signals and control commands transmissions. The goal of this research is to eliminate network traffic with Java 3D models, while still providing users with intuitive environments. In the near future, open-architecture devices will be web-ready having Java virtual machines embedded. This will make the approach more effective for web-based device monitoring and control. A wireless sensor network is a special kind of ad-hoc network with distributed sensing and processing capability that can be used in a wide range of applications, such as environmental monitoring, industrial applications and precision agriculture. Despite their potential applications, such networks have particular features imposed by resource restrictions, such as low computational power, reduced bandwidth and specially limited power source. In case of a network with a high density of sensor nodes, some problems may arise such as the intersection of sensing area, redundant data, communication interference, and energy waste. A management application is necessary to make the most of network resources. On the other hand, a high-density network can introduce a fault-tolerant mechanism, increase precision, and provide multi-resolution data. The network density control depends on the application. In this paper, we propose a method to set up which nodes should be turned off or on. The management may take the sensor node out of service temporally. Our design uses a Voronoi diagram, which decomposes the space into regions around each node. That schema could be used in management architecture for a wireless sensor network. © 2003 IEEE.

This paper reports on some results obtained from the study of an innovative automation system for blowing machines producing PET bottles. As the operation of this kind of machines has some critical timing requirements, the traditional solution for the automation system is based on the use of a dedicated programmable logic controller for real time control and on a personal computer for supervision and monitoring purposes. The new proposal, which makes use of an industrial type personal computer as unique "intelligent" device, is particularly attractive because it could lead to both performance improvements and cost savings. In both the types of automation systems, the connection with sensors/actuators distributed on the machine is realized by means of a profibus DP fieldbus network. After a description of the structure of both the automation systems, the paper analyses their performances. The results are then compared with those obtained in practice during some operational sessions of the blowing machines.

Policy-based management and QoS monitoring are both tasks related to the management of a modern QoS-enabled network. Although related to each other, these tasks are currently executed in a non integrated fashion. The paper presents an architecture that integrates policy-based management and QoS monitoring through the extension of the original IETF policy-based management architecture. The main advantage of using our proposed approach is that network administrators are freed to execute other tasks, while the QoS-enabled network is still monitored. Another advantage is that we are monitoring policies and verifying if they are respected in the network even after its deployment, which is a new feature absent in the IETF solution.

We present an architectural framework, Garnet, which provides a data stream centric abstraction to encourage the manipulation and exploitation of data generated in sensor networks. By providing middleware services to allow mutually-unaware applications to manipulate sensor behaviour, a scalable, extensible platform is provided. We focus on sensor networks with transmit and receive capabilities as this combination poses greater challenges for managing and distributing sensed data. Our approach allows simple and sophisticated sensors to coexist, and allows data consumers to be mutually unaware of each other This also promotes the use of middleware services to mediate among consumers with potentially conflicting demands for shared data. Garnet has been implemented in Java, and we report on our progress to date and outline some likely scenarios where the use of our distributed architecture and accompanying middleware support enhances the task of sharing data in sensor network environments.

Although there has been a lot of discussion of "transactions" in mobile e-commerce (m-commerce), very little attention has been paid for distributed transactional properties of the computations facilitating m-commerce. In this paper, we first present a requirement analysis and then present a wireless terminal-based transaction manager (TM) architecture. This architecture is based on the assumption that there is an application that supports certain business transaction(s) and that it uses the TM to store transactional state information and retrieve it after a communication link, application, or terminal crash. We present the design of such a TM, including the application interface, modules and log structure. A pilot implementation of this TM for the location-based application is also discussed. We further discuss other alternatives to design such a TM that together can be called "ontological transaction monitor". This acts as an intelligent component between the application and the servers accessed during m-commerce transactions and controls the perceivable communication behavior of the terminal towards the servers, maintains the state information and takes care of tight coupling of transactional properties of the computations as well as of security and privacy.

Using XML-based Web services for network management purposes gains more and more attention as the underlying principles seem to be highly appropriate for developing efficient and interoperable management systems. Hereby, a major advantage is the standard, XML-based way of accessing, finding, and defining management functionality in a distributed, Web-based environment. In this context, the following paper presents a novel management interface allowing to control MPLS (multiprotocol label switching) devices via Web service calls. Moreover, a novel virtual networking environment based on UML (user-mode Linux) is presented which can be used to establish comprehensive network scenarios efficiently without using dedicated hardware.

There have been worldwide research and development efforts to automate various processes of bio-production and those efforts will be expanded with priority given to tasks which require high intensive labor or produce high value-added product and tasks under hostile environment. In the field of bio-production, capabilities of the versatility and robustness of automated system have been major bottlenecks along with economical efficiency. This paper introduces a new concept of automation based on teleoperation, which can provide solutions to overcome inherent difficulties in automating bio-production processes. Operator (former), computer, and automatic machinery share their roles utilizing their maximum merits to accomplish given tasks successfully. Among processes of greenhouse watermelon cultivation, tasks such as pruning, watering, pesticide application, and harvest with loading were chosen based on the required labor intensiveness and functional similarities to realize the proposed concept. The developed system was composed of 5 major hardware modules such as wireless remote monitoring and task control module, wireless remote image acquisition and data transmission module, gantry system equipped with 4 d.o.f. Cartesian type robotic manipulator, exchangeable modular type end-effectors, and guided watermelon loading and storage module. The system was operated through the graphic user interface using touch screen monitor and wireless data communication among operator, computer, and machine. The proposed system showed practical and feasible way of automation in the field of volatile bio-production process.
