With the increase of the heterogeneity of the Internet and the complexity of distributed computing, application management is facing more and more sophisticated requirements. In a dynamic, synergistic, and geographically broad environment, cross-domain resource management is becoming an important factor for application quality of service. We present a middleware architecture and initial implementation of that middleware that satisfies applications according to expected requirements, application service level agreement and distributed networked resources in and beyond the local environment. The networked resources are grouped in a hierarchical manner and their usage is optimized through the resource management system. This framework presents the same interface for any given resource type, with only the parameters changing to reflect that resources' specific requirements. This system enables interoperability, dynamic service discovery, and management functions such as monitoring, controlling and reporting, and dynamic reconfiguration and management.

The authors propose an agent based approach for workflow management, aiming at achieving flexible and dynamic workflow management in the distributed environment. We treat agents as autonomous entities with abilities to solve problems independently and propose an agent hierarchy as well as an agent model. The agent hierarchy consists of three kinds of agents at three neighboring levels: activity agents, role agents and actor agents. With our agent hierarchy, the gap between the dynamic workflow enactment and the static business process model can be bridged. The three levels of agents collaborate with each other through the contract-net approach and the feedback mechanism. Through such collaboration, activity-actor assignments can be achieved flexibly and dynamically; and the workflow execution can be monitored and managed in a real time fashion. The agent model consists of three sub-agents: a message-receiving one, a decision-making one and a message-sending one. Connected by two message queues, these three collaboratively operating sub-agents can complete functions of an agent effectively. Through message transfers of the message-receiving/sending sub-agents and the message based behavior-performing of the decision-making subagent, individual agents as well as the agent hierarchy can operate effectively and efficiently.

This paper describes a platform-independent application for the monitoring of distributed applications. The tool is intended for system administrators to properly distribute the components of a distributed application onto particular machines. An essential part of this tool is based on intelligent mobile agent technology used to access the target systems. Although a full implementation turned out to be infeasible due to security considerations, the implementation and experimentation indicate the suitability of intelligent agents technology for such purposes.

The generation of power for telecommunications systems does not inherently require computercontrol. However, the use of microprocessors can dramatically enhance the capabilities of both power converters and peripheral system functions. Proper application of intelligentcontrol to a power system adds desirable features, improves system reliability, makes the system easier to use, lowers both equipment and operating costs, and pushes performance to levels that would be impossible otherwise. Misapplication of intelligence can have the opposite effects. intelligentcontrol can be effectively applied to power converters, low voltage disconnect controllers, overall system control, user interfaces, and the monitoring of voltage, current, and temperature. Remote monitoring and full remote control are made possible through the use of intelligentcontrol. Manufacturing, purchasing, installation, inventory, and maintenance information can also be electronically embedded within the system. In practice, the proper application of intelligentcontrol to a power system will seek an optimal balance of the often conflicting design goals of lower cost, higher reliability, greater simplicity, improved performance, and added features. distributedcontrol, distributed communications, and the use of small, dedicated controllers are effective in achieving these goals. This paper offers some practical examples of where added intelligence has enhanced existing products. It discusses the advantages and disadvantages of intelligentcontrol, the location and extent of the intelligence, and some caveats on how far to push the envelope.

With the advent of the Internet, new forms of distance interaction were born, which allow specialists to offer their services through a network, An important application is distance control in industrial plants, which makes I emote intervention on a real plant possible, for control, maintenance, and monitoring purposes or to modify its production cycle, This paper proposes a Virtual Plant to access through the Internet (or a Intranet) a remote industrial plant and interact with it from a distance, The aim is remote performance of the normal monitoring and control operations that are usually carried out locally, so that the technicians who evaluate the trend of the production cycle, or diagnose and possibly resolve any malfunctions tat occur, do not necessarily have to be physically present in the plant itself but can operate from any part of the world through the Internet, This makes intervention not only timely but also efficient (it is possible to centralize logically correlated functions even when they refer to remote elements) and safe for the staff involved as they do not always have to be physically present in risky environments.

This paper describes a self-diagnosis and self-calibration technique to be employed in a distributedintelligent sensor system for environmentalmonitoring. With this 'built-in intelligence' the system is expected to be low in maintenance and advises the central computer whenever the sensor is faulty and needs to be replaced. A majority voting scheme is proposed to detect the hard-errors while the sensor output signal features are analysed to detect the soft-errors. Flow Injection Analysis is chosen as the sampling methodology. The overall flow chart of the system operation is also described.

In this paper, we present a distributed fuzzy agent architecture with applications to network management and control. Each agent is designed to mimic human problem solving abilities in a network environment with monitoring and control objectives. In this fuzzy agent framework each agent is equipped with a fuzzy micro-expert system, consisting of a fuzzy knowledge-base and an inference engine. The knowledge-base is a collection of fuzzy rules derived from an expert and represented as fuzzy conditional statements. Each agent is configured to react to precepts from its local environment and also to commands decoded in messages received from other fuzzy agents. The agents' actions have local or external behaviors. Local behaviors are mainly due to environmental sensors while external behaviors consist of collaborative control messages forwarded to other fuzzy agents.

This paper proposes a distance education system based on CBM using Personal computer which is real time interactive system adding external device. This system goes with educational systems that are distanced at multiple campuses with the behalf of efficient lecture using surveillance system. This distance education system consists of multiple functions such as white-board, multiple opposition monitoring, audio support, tool box which is user-preference, and additional environmental technique. In the face of technical part, this system has the skill of managing session, accessing control function, controlling network and controlling media. Especially, for the purpose of watching each classrooms. This system provides classrooms monitoring system too. Surveillance system transfers the status of each classroom's status to host site by decreasing the load of sending video data. It also has the function of diminishing additional cost of communication both sides when you watch the empty classroom for monitoring at night. Using Guarding system means to protect the real estate and to save the lives from the sudden accident without additional cost. The system is one of the open university systems which is now hot issue and open education area including Multimedia on the network for the end-users. It is implemented on the cyberspace to provide materials runs between the host site and remote site.

Describes the structure and features of an intelligent electronic system (IES) with fourth (and elements of fifth) levels of intelligence. The IES includes a distributed sensor network (DSN) and contains: measurement and processing, and communication subsystems. The adaptive and iterative algorithms of the IES are based on two sensor defect compensation methods: calibration and prediction. The principles of compensation, the simulation of correction and measurement, and IES modeling are also described. The proposed approach has been implemented in industry.
