The role of multicamera machine vision systems for the inspection of complex artifacts and assemblies, as well as the monitoring of manufacturing process, is briefly reviewed. There is a need for a vision system which allows images obtained using several different cameras to be digitized and then described in abstract symbolic terms. The representation of an image in this way enables logical inferences to be made about it, prior to inter-relating it to similar data derived from other cameras and/or the same camera at a different time. A distributed computing system, intended specifically for this type of task, is described in this article. It comprises several standard computers, connected together using a conventional data network. Each of these computers controls dedicated image processing hardware attached to it, using a Prolog program. These are called slaves and are controlled using another computer, termed the master, which provides overall control of all slaves attached to the network. There may be as many as 32 slaves, each one being able to operate up to 32 cameras. A similar network configuration could be used to control a set of image processing sub-systems, each one being implemented in software. A prototype network, incorporating three computers, has been built and demonstrated by the authors, who are now developing a model manufacturing system, with the intention of demonstrating the effectiveness of the network in monitoring and controlling industrial processes.

We describe the design of an architecture for an intelligent integrated mission planner for autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs). Mission planning is an integral and important part of the software architecture of an AUV. Among the several functional modules of an AUV such as planner, controller, navigator, and perception, the planner plays the key role in generating, monitoring, and controlling of all mission tasks. In order to perform complex missions, the planner needs a wide range of knowledge and efficient reasoning techniques. Mission planning involves navigational planning, resource planning, safety planning, and mission-specific task planning. These functions require reasoning about the knowledge of the environment, vehicle, on-board resources, and mission tasks. The proposed design employs a mixture of hierarchical and heterarchical architectures. Case-based reasoning is employed for synthesizing mission plans. Among the different planner modules, design details of the navigational planner have been elaborated. The approach integrates advanced artificial intelligence techniques with AUV control architecture to make mission planning and execution simpler and flexible. The design takes into consideration the limited availability of AUV resources, scalability, and portability to other autonomous systems.

Continuous monitoring of a computer network performance is probably the only solution which allows prompt identification of anomalous functioning conditions and knowledge of parameters on which to base speedy, effective recovery interventions. A number of tools for performance management already exist, but their effectiveness is limited as they are essentially inserted inside owner network management solutions. In the paper we describe the realization of PMt, a platform for the development of performance management applications for the control and real-time management of a heterogeneous computer network. PMt imposes an object-oriented view of the distributed system, defines a performance management design methodology which adapts well to really distributed system management and provides the user with a set of tools and services to assist him both in the design of new performance management applications and in actual management of the whole system.< >

This paper1 describes a fully distributed biological-object system that supports FACS (Fluorescence Activated Cell Sorter)2 instrumentation. The architecture of the system can be applied to any laboratory automation system that involves distributed instrument control and data management. All component processes of FACS (such as instrument control, protocol design, data analysis, and data visualization), which may run on different machines, are modeled as cooperatively-working "agents."Communication among agents is performed through shared-objects by triggered methods. This shared-object metaphor encapsulates the details of network programming. The system facilitates the annotation of classes with first-order formulae that express logical constraints on objects;these constraints are automatically maintained upon updates. Also, the shared-object communication and polymorphic triggered methods are exploited to produce a homogeneous interface for instrument control. Copyright © 1993, AAAI (***). All rights reserved.

The main objective of this paper is to describe several fundamental issues in the development of a practical and unified technology for building fault-tolerant, adaptive and distributed real-time intelligent decision systems (RTIDS) for monitoring and control of safety-critical real-time environments. These embedded systems include new generation airplane avionics, high-performance network and telephone switching systems, Space Station control software, weapons control systems, and medical monitoring equipments. This technology shall be based on a rigorous framework which facilitates formal verification and validation of these intelligent time-critical embedded systems. Real-time intelligent decision systems exhibit three characteristics which distinguish them from other decision systems: (1) bounded response time, (2) adaptive to the changing environment, and (3) fault-tolerant. An initial effort is made to tackle the difficult analysis problem of determining whether a rule-based decision system has bounded response time, but more work remains to be performed to yield a practical response time verification technology. This paper describes research results and ongoing investigations concerning the analysis problem.

The intelligent real-time monitoring associate (IRMA) framework for supervisory control of complex distributed production processes is presented. IRMA integrates decision analytic, optimization, and AI-style tools into a multiprocessing problem-solving environment. The application of IRMA to emissions control at a geothermal power plant is described. This application uses the Gaussian influence diagram (GID) model for control by unrolling a continuous process into a sequence of discrete-time control decisions and optimizing them, taking account of previous observations of the system state. A tutorial introduction to GIDs is provided, and approaches to model specification and repeated construction of the GIDs used for emissions control are described. Examples of the operation of the controller are given, and extensions of this method to other aspects of supervisory process control are suggested.< >

This paper attempts to illustrate the requirements and problem definitions of computer integrated processes systems (CIPS) for continuous manufacturing industries. An integrated distributed intelligent platform of software systems that supports the process design, operation, management and equipment maintenance is addressed. Its architecture, characteristics and functions are discussed. The structure and functions of the meta-system (which controls and manages the IDIP) are presented. The paper includes eight sections. Section 1 discusses the need to develop computer integrated process systems in continuous manufacturing industries. Section 2 analyzes the real problems existing in continuous manufacturing industries. In section 3, we discuss the distinctions between CIMS (computer integrated manufacturing systems) in discrete manufacturing and CIPS (computer integrated process systems) in continuous manufacturing, and analyzes the CIPS characteristics. Section 4 discusses the objectives of the strategic grant. Section 5 presents the structure and functions of an integrated distributed intelligent platform of software systems and presents its features and requirements. The meta-system structure and functions are introduced in section 6 and 7. Finally, we present a few developing research projects (functional subsystems) to support the implementation of CIPS strategy and applications of IDIP.< >

In this paper a key management approach and a method for secure and authentic inter-domain communications are presented within the context of the telecommunications management network (TMN). The TMN components are divided into domains and public keys of components are distributed on a per-domain basis. The approach has the advantage of reducing the number of keys that need to be delivered whenever old keys expire and new ones are generated. In addition, the division into domains allows the effects due to attacks to the components in a domain to be contained within that domain. Interdomain communications is established by applying a 2-Phase Certification Server as a bridge of authority between two communicating components in differing domains. The solution has the advantage of allowing each domain authority to maintain control over its domain by rejecting foreign messages of suspicions origin. Although presented in the context of the TMN, the approach is general enough to be applicable to other forms of networks.< >
