Improvements to safety on a drilling rig must cover all aspects of its operations. Safety awareness of the crew is clearly an important area, but careful set up of drilling equipment and monitoring of the operation is another. A computer system for real time monitoring of rig status, problem detection and controlling rig operations is described. This is the first step towards control, and then automation which will bring further safety and environmental benefits. It is important for the driller to have the capability to follow activities on the rig to ensure that they are appropriate to current rig operations and consistent with safe conditions. A computer system can also help by being continuously vigilant, watching for the earliest signs of potentially catastrophic events, detecting them before they become critical and alerting the driller. This includes monitoring pressure and flow data to check for washouts that can result in a twist off, and checking flow rates and tank volumes for early kick detection. The system can also be used for post analysis of problems to help develop new procedures to avoid re-occurrence. In this paper we briefly review the event detection capability of the system with intelligent alarms for washout and kick detection. Early kick detection reduces the problem of circulating out the kick, but it is still a hazardous procedure requiring close monitoring. A new display has been introduced to monitor kill procedures and has led to better control. The operation and experience with this system in terms of safety benefits are discussed and illustrated with field examples. Finally we discuss the way forward and how such systems are currently being developed to include process control and automation for the rig of the future.
Successful operation of life support systems for human exploration of space will depend largely on in situ sensors and integration of these sensors to an autonomous control architecture. The complexity of a life suppo...

The prototype application of a distributed problem-solving framework (DPSF) is described. The DPSF is made up of the coarse-grained multiagent systems defined as a set of computational agents that autonomously execute. cooperate, and coordinate each other to solve the network management problems. This loosely coupled heterogeneous system is connected by a common bus. In the proposed architectural components of the DPSF, the blackboard modulus consists of a data blackboard and a control blackboard, and knowledge sources (KSs) are composed of a local-planning KS, a metaplanning KS, a communication KS, a domain KS and a constraint KS. It is found that the DPSF offers advantages of performance, reliability, extensibility and the ability to handle incomplete data and knowledge.< >

Schema-based navigational techniques are used to introduce dynamic path replanning for a mobile robot, based on internal sensor information. This mode of operation, termed homeostatic control, forms an integral part of the autonomous robot architecture. A model that is analogous to the mammalian endocrine system serves as the basis for this mode. Simulation results verify the viability of this concept. It is found that dynamic replanning can be carried out using internal monitoring of the robot's state, and not solely based on environmental perception. The robot can be shown to be responsive to changes in fuel, temperature, and other conditions as it navigates through the world.< >

It is noted that the most flexible and feature-rich implementations of intelligent networks are based on centralized databases. The resulting architectural and hardware separation between the database and switching functions assures continued high network call processing capacity while simultaneously optimizing the use of dedicated computing resources for the database function. It is demonstrated that similar advantages are obtained from the architectural separation of the function of end-user access to the databases to monitor and change the way the network handles the user's needs. Dedicated computing resources for the user-access function allow a highly responsive and user-friendly interface and protect other critical parts of the network from unintended slowdowns. An example of such a system, AT&T's NETSTAR, which is used to support intelligent networks provided by AT&T to its overseas customers, is discussed. The NETSTAR realization of this function is explained, with an indication of how it meets both current and future needs of the users of intelligent networks.< >

The issue of site autonomy in the model of a decentralized distributed database system is discussed. The two major characteristics of site autonomy are identified and examined, and examples are provided to demonstrate their significance. A system architecture is proposed that provides a flexible and powerful way of achieving the required degree of site autonomy.< >
