The urgent demand for sustainable smart city solutions, fueled by rapid urbanization and environmental concerns, has prompted the adoption of advanced technologies to enhance living standards and resource efficiency across various sectors. LoRaWAN technology emerges as an effective and affordable means to connect sensors in urban areas, addressing challenges such as scalability, energy consumption, and high deployment costs, faced by many smart city initiatives. This research tackles these issues by implementing four key low-cost monitoring systems: air quality, environmental, liquid flow and level, and smart streetlights. Contributing to a more sustainable urban environment, we design and deploy LoRaWAN-based systems equipped with sensors, and strategically placed gateways for optimal coverage. The collected data is transmitted to a central network server which can be accessed remotely for real-time monitoring and analysis. The result confirms that LoRaWAN-based monitoring systems efficiently gather and transmit data with low energy use, Implementation of these systems in smart cities enhances urban planning, resource management, and sustainability, facilitating proactive pollution control and cost reduction.

The Health and Injury control (HIC) system for miners stands as a crucial requirement due to the high-risk nature of the mining industry. The Smart Safety Helmet has been developed to meet the vital needs through the use of advanced Internet of Things (IoT) technology in mining operations. Continuous monitoring of health parameters, such as heart rate and body temperature, enables the helmet to promptly alert miners regarding any irregularities, thus facilitating improved preventive health measures. This Helmet also includes impact detection sensors that provide immediate alerts, ensuring a quick response in the event of accidents, contributing to injury prevention. Its ergonomic design and focus worker comfort encourage prolonged use without causing discomfort or hesitance in wearing safety equipment. Additionally, essential environmental sensors identify hazardous gases and extreme temperature conditions for enhanced safety protection.

Landslides or slope failures cause significant damage to the transportation infrastructure worldwide, resulting in billions of dollars of property damage. The initial slope movement of highway slopes, caused by environmental factors and man-made activities, must be detected early to prevent significant losses in infrastructure damages and human lives. However, traditional monitoring approaches for slope movement, such as periodic human inspection and surveying, are labor-intensive and time-consuming. With the advent of the Internet of Things (IoT) and high-speed internet, the potential to use such technologies for monitoring remote earth movement of highway embankments is becoming increasingly important. This paper presents an IoT-based distributed system for the early detection of slope movements to assist transportation authorities in immediately repairing the slope before a major failure occurs. We built a laboratory prototype embankment, equipped with various IoT sensors (e.g., tilt, moisture, and tensiometer sensors), that simulate a failure-prone slope to evaluate the effectiveness of our system. A user-friendly GUI is developed to enable users to utilize the system remotely. The collected sensory data for four months allowed us to analyze the soil hydrologic dynamics and the slope performance by detecting changes in the slope tilting both parallel (pitch) and perpendicular (roll). The experimental results showed that our system could detect negligible movement (1mm) and rotation (0.02°) of slopes.

Agriculture is the primary line of occupation for most of the Indian peoples. In India about 58% of people are working on agricultural as it is their main source of income. But the sane place farmers are facing the issues like irrigation, lack of modernization and surface water overexploitation. The proposed automated irrigation system integrates multiple nodes equipped with NPK sensors, Node MCU, and PIC microcontrollers to monitor soil moisture and nutrition levels in real-time. Utilizing Internet of Things (IoT) technology, the system enables remote monitoring and control using Thingspeak. The NPK sensors provide accurate data on soil nutrient content, allowing for precise and targeted fertilization. To prevent well motor pump dry-run and enhance system efficiency, the current sensor attached to power cable of well motor pump. The system consists of a network of nodes purposefully placed across the agricultural field, each equipped with smart sensors capable of monitoring crucial environmental vales like soil moisture level, atmospheric temperature value, and humidity level. Furthermore, the system offers a user-friendly interface accessible through web or mobile applications, allowing farmers to monitor and control the irrigation process remotely. The IoT based intelligent irrigation system is not only enhancing water efficiency but also contributes to sustainable agriculture practices. By reducing water consumption and minimizing environmental impact, the proposed system aims to improve overall crop yield and foster a more resilient and adaptive approach to modern farming. As technology continues to evolve, integrating intelligent solutions in agriculture becomes crucial for ensuring food security and sustainability in the face of changing global conditions.

This work presents the development of a software platform for the management of real-time integrated Structural Health monitoring (SHM) of historic structures. The developed software code allows managing massive databases of monitoring records, and encompasses signal processing tools, dynamic identification through automated Operational Modal Analysis (OMA), pattern recognition, and automated damage detection. Data fusion between heterogeneous monitoring data (dynamic, static, environmental, etc.) is performed through correlation analysis and quality control charts. The effectiveness and potentials of the developed code is appraised through four case studies of Italian historic buildings: the Sciri Tower, the San Pietro bell-tower, the Consoli Palace, and the Basilica of Santa Maria degli Angeli. These historical buildings, located in the region of Umbria in central Italy, are permanently monitored by static/dynamic/environmental SHM systems. The reported results demonstrate the ability of the developed software to perform real-time system identification, feature extraction, pattern recognition, and damage detection. computer-simulated damage scenarios are utilized to assess the efficiency of the code to detect the initiation of potential damage mechanisms and trigger an alarm signal. © 2021 international conference on Structural Health monitoring of intelligent Infrastructure: Transferring Research into Practice, SHMII. At a time when urbanization is increasing, and the world's energy need is growing, energy efficiency in building elements has become a key factor in the environment impact mitigation and operational cost reduction strategies. Building management is governed by traditional operational features that are often inadequate to contemporary occupation patterns, infrastructural demands, and environmental changes. Consequently, there is a growing tendency towards the implementation of integrated systems such as autonomous management systems which can oversee energy use and other resources without sacrificing comfort and safety. Cloud storage and wireless technologies have now made it possible to improve energy management like never before. By making use of such technologies, smart building systems are able to receive, transmit and monitor data from many networks in real time. This capability further enhances the control of energy-demanding devices and processes such as heating, ventilation, and lighting, which are controlled and manipulated by preset schedules and manual settings. In addition to this, predictive maintenance and detection of inefficiencies is possible due to real time data analysis trends, usage history and anticipation of external consumption forces.

In an age dominated by technology, manual tasks are becoming increasingly rare. However, gardening remains a beloved pastime for many, often requiring significant manual effort. The project aims to revolutionize gardening with the introduction of a smart plant watering system that minimizes manual labor and offers users unprecedented convenience. The system boasts a range of automated functionalities that can be scheduled for operation without human intervention or controlled remotely. Sensors, crucial in IoT systems, relay key information about environmental conditions necessary for plant health, such as light level, soil moisture, humidity, and temperature. The Particle Photon 2 microcontroller serves as the core processor, managing system operations and ensuring effective monitoring and control of the plant watering process. The result is an automated smart plant watering and monitoring system designed for small house plants, set to transform indoor gardening practices through IoT-enabled automation and monitoring. The goal of the project is to create a user-friendly system that seamlessly integrates automation, enhancing both efficiency and enjoyment for gardening enthusiasts.

The dynamic and unpredictable nature of environmental elements, such as weather and ground conditions, profoundly influences the efficiency of agricultural robots. Real-time environmental perception is an enabling technology for several agricultural automatic systems, facilitating precise scheduling of tasks like planting, harvesting, and irrigation. Drawing inspiration from successful applications of computer vision in crop health monitoring and AI-driven weather impact prediction, in this paper we propose a system for simultaneous recognition of weather and ground conditions based on computer vision techniques. The system can run in real-time onboard smart cameras, making it affordable at low cost. After providing a detailed description of its architecture and methodology, we conduct extensive experiments to demonstrate the effectiveness of the system in real-world conditions and its significance in advancing agricultural robotics, fostering sustainable farming practices by optimizing resource utilization, and mitigating environmental impact.

System-on-Chip (SoC) technology is constantly evolving and being applied in various fields such as the Building Automation System (BAS). Aiming to improve systems' performance and users' experience, BAS relies on SoC to control the electromechanical systems of intelligent buildings. In order to achieve temperature control, a temperature control system for smart buildings is proposed in this paper, which works in conjunction with air conditioning and windows controlled by direct current (DC) motors. For the purpose of environmental protection and energy saving, opening/closing windows always has a higher priority than open air conditioning. The system achieves temperature monitoring through the indoor and outdoor installation of temperature sensors. Users are allowed to set the desired temperature through a universal asynchronous receiver-transmitter transmitter (UART Tx). In general, the design contains three modules: SoC, external circuit design, and proportional, integral, and derivative (PID) control. All three modules work together to control DC motors to open/close windows at a certain angle with a certain angular speed. The SoC module contains a temperature control unit, a universal asynchronous receiver-transmitter receiver (UART Rx), and a digital-to-analog converter (DAC). The on-chip part of the system passed tests on a Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA).

Aiming at the monitoring system for the distributed nitrogen generator devices, a remote distributed monitoring system for mine nitrogen generator devices based on the edge gateway is designed. Three parts are involved in the monitoring system, they are local devices, cloud server and monitoring side. Local devices are typical industrial control system with PLC controller and network communicator to realize remote monitoring. More than common remote monitoring system, an edge gateway is added near the local controller, helping handle data, store data and compress data, communicating with cloud server for remote monitoring. The cloud server communicates with the nitrogen generator devices with MQTT protocol. The monitoring side is programmed using JQuery and Echarts to build Web interface. Two tests were conducted to confirm the time-delay and control reliability of the remote monitoring system, it showed that time delay was less than 400ms with no packet loss and success control rate is more than 99.9%. © 2021, Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd.
