Recently, the growth of Internet of Things (IoT) devices combined with edge computing opened many opportunities for several novel applications. Typical examples are Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV) that are deployed for photogrammetry, surveillance, disaster rapid response and environmentalmonitoring. A common challenge across all these networked applications is the ability to provide a persistent service - a service able to continuously maintain a high level of performance - responding to events that may change the state of the network, e:g:, nodes or link failures. To cope with this challenge, in this paper we propose APRON, an edge cloud-assisted architecture for distributed and adaptive task planning management in a network of IoT devices, e:g:, drones. APRON uses a novel planning strategy that, leveraging a Jackson's network model, supports monitoring and control operations while the states of the (edge or cloud) network evolve. By using APRON, edge computing application programmers can design and implement a wide range of IoT task management policies leveraging different protection methodologies across several failure models.

Software defined network (SDN) is a network paradigm that decouples the control and data plane of network layer by introducing a logically centralized control known as controller. SDN promises network monitoring, easy and instant network implementation and effective central control but at the same time this central control introduces a single point of failure thereby increasing the risk of distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks. Thus, this paper analyses the various types of DDoS attacks that can be performed in SDN environment with the help of various attack models. Further, an attempt is made to analyze such attacks and bring out the features that could uniquely classify legitimate traffic and attack traffic using machine learning techniques. Finally, an Open Network Operating System (ONOS) controller module is developed that could live detect any ongoing DDoS attack.

The paper presents a combined approach to forecasting of the manufacturing system target indicators, depending on the key factors determining the functioning of this system and business environmental factors. The approach includes: (i) identification of key factors and weak signals influencing the target indicators by analyzing the system functioning model in the external environment represented by a cognitive map of the situation;(ii) analysis of dynamics of the identified key factors and manufacturing system target indicators and the construction of a forecast model using time series analysis methods;(iii) monitoring of the heterogeneous information space in order to detect changes in trends and the composition of parameters of the forecast model;(iv) correction of the forecast model and cognitive map of the situation according to the results of the detected changes. The approach is focused on the formation of long-term forecasts of the target indicators and increasing the accuracy of these forecasts by identifying significant influencing events whose influence does not have time to reflect in time series. Research and innovations in intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) bring numerous benefits to local and global communities. ITS is defined as a system based on the application of contemporary computer and communication technologies into transport, to increase traffic efficiency, reduce pollution and other environmental effects of transport, and increase travelers’ safety. The main goals of our research, reported here, are to improve the safety and efficiency of transport. We investigate a comprehensive solution that includes computer vision, Internet of Things (IoT), social media and AI control of the whole transport system. Autonomous vehicles and vehicular ad hoc networks are intelligent subsystems that will also be integral parts of future transport systems. This is expected to significantly improve traffic safety and throughput which will deliver sustainable economic and environmental benefits to the industry and the community. In alignment with vision zero approaches, we aim at zero human casualties on the road and fewer greenhouse gases emissions. Road transport safety is a critical topic of state, national and international importance, due to the health and safety of the community and serious environmental implications. Public opinion is extremely important in the changes to come and we are presenting here results from a survey that we have conducted.

For the important problem of increasing levels of air pollution and noise in urban and rural areas, we propose a holistic, multi-dimensional approach to gather, monitor and analyze heterogeneous data sources of air pollutants and noise indicators, into an integrated, intelligent computational system. Although several interesting approaches have been developed for monitoring pollution and noise, however the challenge remains for even more detailed, precise, large scale *** overcome the limitations of current systems, we envision an integrated approach to human-centric environmental intelligence, bringing together modern IoT technology and the human factor. In particular, our approach emphasizes selected behavioural and health aspects, and the complementary use of sensing technology with citizen engagement and crowdsourcing methods. The proposed system will collect diverse data from heterogeneous sources, such as mobile and static wireless sensor networks, crowdsourcing, citizen questionnaires and social media analytics, to continuously combine objective estimations with subjective perception of air quality and noise. With the use of advanced AI and Deep Learning algorithms, our system will be able to estimate air pollutants concentration and noise levels in micro-scale with adequate precision over large urban-scale environments. Furthermore, tracking of behavioral and psychological users' input, as well as personal exposure to pollution, will allow studying the impact of air quality and noise on the users' daily habits and the interplay of ambient conditions with behavioural factors, towards an active engagement of citizens in a hybrid techno-social manner. A reference architecture for the realization of this human-centric environmental intelligence approach is presented. Also, a planned implementation at the city of Patras, Greece is discussed.
