In this paper, we introduce Mayflower, a new distributed filesystem that is co-designed from the ground up to work together with a network control plane. In addition to the standard distributed filesystem components, Mayflower has a flow monitor and manager running alongside a software-defined networking controller. This tight coupling with the network controller enables Mayflower to make intelligent replica selection and flow scheduling decisions based on both filesystem and network information. It further enables Mayflower to perform global optimizations that are unavailable to conventional distributed filesystems and network control planes. Our evaluation results from both simulations and a prototype implementation show that Mayflower reduces average read completion time by more than 25% compared to current state-of-the-art distributed filesystems with an independent network flow scheduler, and more than 75% compared to HDFS with ECMP.

Aiming at the situation of lacking automation and informatization for the tunnel construction ventilation, this article proposed a monitoring system based on the fieldbus technology. The monitoring system consisted of three parts including the monitor cabinet, the local control cabinet and the fieldbus sensors. A monitoring program, which was written by the WinCC software, ran on the monitor cabinet. All the environmental parameters and working parameters could be displayed in the monitoring program. Meanwhile, a Programmable Logical computer (PLC) was used as the master station of the Modbus network, which collected all the parameters from all the slave station sensors. In the local control cabinet, a PLC was used to receive all the parameters from the master station, and display them on the local screen. The transducer which drove the ventilator was also a slave station receiving the control signal from the master station to change the airflow. This system was tested at the construction ventilation project department in Tianmu mountainous tunnel. The result showed that this system improved the automation and informatization level of the tunnel construction ventilation monitoring system and reduced the cost of tunnel construction ventilation.

Unconsciousness is a state of unawareness of self and environment of those mental activities by which people are made aware of themselves and their environment, coupled with a diminished responsiveness to environmental stimuli. Smart sensors are mostly used in aeronautical, computer and for gesture recognition in biomedical application. This system designed and developed a reliable, energy efficient for sending alert message to the concern person when person in coma. The system used smart sensors like flex sensor, MEMS body sensor and eye blink sensor. Whenever person moves any finger, any eye lid and tilt the body towards right or left side, the flex sensor, eye blink sensor and MEMS sensor detects the movement respectively, and alert to the concern person through GSM.

intelligent buildings are responsible for ensuring the indoor air quality for their occupants under normal operation as well as under possibly harmful contaminant events due to accidental or malicious actions. An emerging environmental control application is monitoring the intelligent buildings against the presence of such events, by incorporating various sensing technologies and distributed detection and isolation algorithms. The needed simplicity, the improved scalability and fault tolerance are some of the main reasons for choosing distributed approaches over centralized ones. Hence, the effective partitioning of buildings into smaller sections for contaminant detection and isolation approaches is of great importance. In this paper, we present a heuristic algorithm for partitioning the building into smaller sections. The proposed algorithm is based on matrix clustering techniques and groups the building zones in order to form the different sections while ensuring (i) maximum decoupling between the various sections, (ii) strong connectivity between the zones of a section and (iii) fairness with respect to the number of allocated zones. The partitioning is achieved in near real time, providing the ability of repartitioning and adapting to the dynamic nature of the airflows. The main contribution of this work is the automatic partitioning of the building into sections, which enables the distributed simulation, modeling, analysis and management of the intelligent building while ensuring the effective detection and isolation of contaminants in the building interior.

Wireless Sensor and Actuator Networks (WSANs) have emerged as a variation of wireless sensor networks. WSANs have great potential for improving many current applications, such as environmental monitoring/surveillance, life science and rescue/support operations. In previous work, we proposed a fuzzy-based WSAN testbed that based on data provided by sensors and actuators select an appropriate actuator node. In this paper, we evaluate the performance of our proposed fuzzy-based WSAN testbed system considering depth and RGB sensors. We show the implemented realtime control applications in testbed system. From the results, we observe that our testbed have a good performance for different job types.

According to an air quality monitoring survey done by Greenpeace, India has PM2.5 levels, which is arguably higher than safety limits. It is essential to impart environmental education to denizens of India. Previous solutions include usage of Mobile Apps to aid in sharing Air Quality Index as a part of EGovernance initiatives. To aid Government in boosting the efficacy of E-Governance service for pollution control and provide environmental education, we intend to design an intelligent framework that utilizes social networks. In this paper, we have proposed an automated framework for pollution control E-Governance service which takes the user profiles on social networks and data collected from Internet of Things (IoT) based air pollution sensors as input. The prototype utilizes Machine learning algorithm to avoid human intervention and social networks as a platform to aid in outreaching environmental education to large masses of people.

Remote monitoring and intelligent intervention of machines are essentials in a smart industrial environment. However, the heterogeneity of machines makes it difficult to construct solutions for this purpose. This work aims to describe how to provide smart industrial environments using Smart Gateways, RESTful Web Services, and Cloud Computing. In the proposed solution, a Smart Gateway is responsible for representing a given machines' resources as RESTful Web Services for clients and Web applications, sending monitored data to a persistence service in a Cloud, while also allowing for the remote control of these machines. As a proof of concept, a smart industrial environment was developed from the considerations of a real case study at an apparel factory. Functional testing and performance evaluation confirmed the feasibility of the solution in this case study.

In many multi-robot applications such as target search, environmental monitoring and reconnaissance, the multi-robot system operates semi-autonomously, but under the supervision of a remote human who monitors task progress. In these applications, each robot collects a large amount of task-specific data that must be sent to the human periodically to keep the human aware of task progress. It is often the case that the human-robot communication links are extremely bandwidth constrained and/or have significantly higher latency than inter-robot communication links, so it is impossible for all robots to send their task-specific data together. Thus, only a subset of robots, which we call the knowledge leaders, can send their data at a time. In this paper, we study the knowledge leader selection problem, where the goal is to select a subset of robots with a given cardinality that transmits the most informative task-specific data for the human. We prove that the knowledge leader selection is a submodular function maximization problem under explicit conditions and present a novel distributed submodular optimization algorithm that has the same approximation guarantees as the centralized greedy algorithm. The effectiveness of our approach is demonstrated using numerical simulations.

Aimed at the need of fully-automatically control of agricultural control system, the distributed intelligent greenhouse computerized control system has been researched. It is composed of center computer and single-chip microprocessor as its control core. Based on artificial intelligence and expert system knowledge database, the greenhouse environmental factors are adjusted in time with the help of real-time inspect ion and intelligent decision-making module. Furthermore, optimized growing conditions of crops will be created. The whole system is composed of environmental factors inspection module, intelligent decision-making module, data processing module, database management module, irrigation control module. The system owns many advantages such as intelligent decision-making, convenient operation. Besides, it is easy to extend and update. This system has been realized as a product.
