Information technology (IT) agricultural systems for field observation and environmentalcontrol have attracted considerable attention. Recently, various kinds of dedicated devices for IT agricultural systems have been released for large-scale farmers. It is well known that introducing IT agricultural systems can enhance agricultural production. On the contrary, an initial cost of the system is quite expensive even if typical dedicated devices are introduced. Therefore, reducing an initial cost of the system is a big challenge to disseminate the IT agricultural systems among small and medium-sized farmers. This paper proposes a prototype of IT agricultural systems that can measure an environment and can control the environment according to the measured information. To mitigate the initial cost of the system, our prototype uses Arduino compatible boards that are one of well-known micro-computer boards for general purposes. Therefore, it has a flexibility for designing a hardware and a capability of software development on the Arduino integrated development environment. The proposed system consists of sensing and control devices, a gateway device, and a web service. The sensing and control devices have some sensors such as a temperature, humidity, and soil moisture sensors, and a control function of a water sprinkling. The web service provides a user interface to manage the information in the database system. Experimental results show that the developed prototype system can realize a periodic environmentalmonitoring and environmentalcontrol according to the measured information. Additionally, users can observe the environment visually through the web service.

Coordinating a complex array of deployed assets is a difficult task. Defence employs Tactical Data Link (TDL)s to maintain situation awareness and convey the intent of command and control information. Connectivity is achieved using digital radio communication systems that conform to present military TDL standard waveforms. Managing a TDL is inherently complex and typically requires operators (called TDL Network Managers (TDLNMs)) to actively manage these networks. These TDLNMs are trained military personnel and, due to the transient nature of their careers, most are posted within a few years and are often replaced with less experienced operators. Given this fluctuating level of experience, a Decision Support System (DSS) is being considered to assist the operators in maintaining a network. This chapter describes the conceptual design of an agent-based DSS, that could be used to support an operator, who is responsible for monitoring and optimizing a TDL. This includes tasks such as monitoring, troubleshooting and modifying various aspects of the TDL in order to maintain the required levels of connectivity and performance. One of the key tools used to support this role is a computer-based Network Management System (NMS). The proposed DSS could be developed using an Agent Architecture Framework (AAF) and integrated with the DSS based on distributed Object Computing (DOC) technology. This approach minimizes the risk of integration between the NMS and the DSS, whilst allowing flexibility for future integration requirements. Cognitive Work Analysis (CWA) techniques could also be employed to capture and encode the expertise required for the DSS to operate effectively.

This research work deals with monitoring of combustion quality in power station Boilers using Service Oriented Architecture which is used to minimize the flue gas emissions at the exit. A model of distributed industrial boilers and integrate it with the Internet through Service Oriented Architectural paradigm is designed. This strategy can be applied to monitor and control the industrial boiler process parameters such as Flame Temperature and Flame intensity. It is proposed to consider the use of service oriented architecture to program and deploy the boiler process parameters. The cost effective technique to develop an intelligent combustion monitoring system is discussed in this paper. A combination of image processing algorithm with Bayesian Classifier is used. The feature extraction was done using Image J and feature reduction was done using Support Vector Machine (SVM). The classification of the flame images based on the features was done using the Bayesian approach whose results are also validated. The combination of the two techniques proved to be beneficial so as to monitor the combustion quality at the furnace level is made possible. Moreover the flue gas emissions are minimized which reduces air pollution. The Service Oriented Architecture is designed to access boiler combustion parameter such as flame intensity as a service and implemented in such a way that for every specific requirement of the monitor/control center, the services of the boilers are invoked through a registry and the specific changes in the combustion parameters are also notified. Different boilers of a power plant can be networked together to monitor different combustion process parameters, and they have been integrated with Internet by registering them as services;hence a complete distributed integration environment is exploited. Computational Intelligence (CI) techniques are being increasingly used for automatic monitoring and control systems, especially regarding industrial and environmental applications, due to their performance, their capabilities in fusing noisy or incomplete data obtained from heterogeneous sensors, and the ability in adapting to variations in the operational conditions. Moreover, the increase in the computational power and the decrease of the size of the computing architectures allowed a more pervasive use of CI techniques in a great variety of situations. In this paper, we propose a brief review of the most important CI techniques applied in each step of the design of a monitoring and control system for industrial and environmental applications, and describe how these techniques are integrated in the development of efficient industrial and environmental applications.
