An intelligent energy controller is proposed to manage operation of wireless sensor nodes equipped with energy harvesting devices. The energy controller uses Takagi-Sugeno fuzzy logic and has inputs for the state of the energy buffer and forecasts of solar energy available for harvest. Two different forecasting horizons were investigated, current and next-day, using ideal and pressure-based forecasts. Differential evolution is used to optimize the controller. To validate the evolved controller, a wireless sensor network is simulated using real field-collected environmental data. The optimization goal is to best utilize the solar energy available for harvest while preserving a backup energy reserve. Performing the highest number of operations possible while leaving the energy reserve intact increases deployment time and reliability. The controller using current and next-day energy forecasts made better use of the available energy, indicated by a lower fitness function. However, while it took more measurements when compared to the controller only using the current-day forecast, it also used more reserve energy while still remaining at only a small fraction of the total available reserve. Reserve energy usage using the pressure-based forecast was higher for both forecasting horizons compared to the ideal energy forecast, pointing to further performance improvements possible for a more accurate forecast.

Internet of Things (IoT) devices used in mining, agriculture, and environmental sensing often require Disruption Tolerant Networking (DTN) support, since end-to-end network connectivity may not always available in distributed and sparsely populated locations. Data mules such as workers or vehicles, which pass through the monitored area periodically, bridge the gap between disconnected networks. Since data dissemination often involves multiple users, and configuration updates from the monitoring and control Center needs to be delivered reliably to all participating IoT devices, the combination of efficient Reliable Multicast algorithms with DTN should address this problem effectively. This paper examines the current status of DTN support for multicast from different design aspect of routing protocols and summarizes some of the open issues related to the design of Reliable Multicast DTN (RMDTN) protocols for IoT.

Sensor technologies are vital today in gathering information about certain environments and Wireless Sensors Networks (WSNs) are getting more widespread use every day. The recent advances in Wireless Sensor Networks open new scenarios where sensors can be rapidly deployed without any existing infrastructure. Such networks are useful in many fields, such as smart grid, smart water networks, intelligent transportation, smart homes, health monitoring, environmental control, military applications, etc. Ensuring energy efficient and reliable transport of data in resource constrained WSNs is one of the primary concerns to achieve a high degree of efficiency in monitoring and control systems. In WSN, reliable monitoring of a phenomenon depends on the collective data provided by the target cluster of sensors and not on any individual node, There are several strategies to reduce the power consumption of WSN nodes by increasing the network lifetime and increase the reliability of the network by improving the WSN Quality of Service. However, there is an inherent conflict between power consumption and reliability. This paper describes the concept of WSNs which has been made viable by the convergence of microelectronics systems technology and wireless communications.

In this paper, we address coordination within a team of cooperative autonomous robots that need to accomplish a common goal. Our survey of the vast literature on the subject highlights two directions to further improve the performance of a multi-robot team. In particular, in a dynamic environment, coordination needs to be adapted to the different situations at hand (for example, when there is a dramatic loss of performance due to unreliable communication network). To this end, we contribute a novel approach for coordinating robots. Such an approach allows a robotic team to exploit environmental knowledge to adapt to various circumstances encountered, enhancing its overall performance. This result is achieved by dynamically adapting the underlying task assignment and distributed world representation, based on the current state of the environment. We demonstrate the effectiveness of our coordination system by applying it to the problem of locating a moving, non-adversarial target. In particular, we report on experiments carried out with a team of humanoid robots in a soccer scenario and a team of mobile bases in an office environment.

The article studies the precision management for livestock including breeding, feeding, disease preventing, safety supervision and environmental monitoring. The system based on the wireless mode is developed to monitoring the whole production procedure of livestock. It comprises breeding management,automatic feeding formulation, disease diagnose and prevention, production safety supervision and environmental monitoring subsystems. The study greatly promotes the efficiency of intensive cultivation. Through the practical application in farm, it is proved that the system comprehensive performance is significantly better than the extensive management.

Spurred by needs related to research on the effects of climate change on ecological systems, distributed facilities for ecological research are of growing importance. While software infrastructure for low-level networking services are well-established, experiments using these facilities will demand real time data-driven workflows for monitoring, model inference, and control of environmental processes. In this paper, we motivate and present a middleware-based approach that enables construction and deployment of workflows that assimilate real-time streaming data and, if necessary, command and control streams. We demonstrate the approach by developing and deploying a workflow for characterizing the round-trip delays incurred by increasing levels of software infrastructure, and using the workflow to assess time delay performance in laboratory, campus, and remote scenarios.

Power system protection and emergency control systems require continuous monitoring to prevent grid-wide frequency instability or system islanding. Amongst different methods, cellular computation networks (CCNs) are more suitable for providing dynamic frequency predictions. CCN is a scalable and distributed framework using the concept of cells and intercellular connections to represent a power system topology with multiple synchronous machines, transmission lines and loads. However, from a practical viewpoint, fast computing algorithms are needed for effective monitoring and response. In this paper, a lite CCN is proposed based on generalized neurons (GNs), referred to as the cellular generalized neuron network (CGNN). The performance of CGNN is compared with that of a cellular multilayer perceptron network (CMLPN). The frequency predictions by the CGNN and CMLPN have been validated on a two-area four-machine benchmark power system. Data for the CGNN is provided from a real time digital simulation of the power system with phasor measurement units (PMUs). Based on a performance metric, results obtained show that the CGNN outperforms the CMLPN, especially in terms of least number of trainable parameters, low training time and better prediction accuracy.

The paper describes a smart substation project launched two years ago, as part of the French government's plan “investments for the future”. This project is named “Poste intelligent” within RTE (Smart Substation, in English), and aims to test in real conditions the latest technological developments for both primary and secondary equipment using the second edition of the IEC 61850 standard and new information and communication technologies in a fully interoperable solution. For the first time in France, the substation is designed like an autonomous entity, with adaptive solutions using horizontal inter-substation communications, in addition to the traditional hierarchical concept of “substation to SCADA”. To manage complexity, a strong and well-designed automation system gives better and faster answers, and the automation system is based on a distributed design. Two demonstrators were selected in the principal French area in terms of penetration of wind energy with more than 600 MW installed power on the distribution system in a rural area that creates reversed energy flow from LV to EHV through the local HV system. For the primary equipment, RTE implements optical CTs and low power VTs with a smaller footprint, and uses native fully digital breakers, disconnectors and power transformers. For secondary equipment, RTE implement its first process bus based on a full optical network including more than 20 breakers and at two voltage levels (220 and 90kV). At the same time, various new sensors installed on both primary and secondary equipment feed a full monitoring solution. A new HMI gives enhanced situational awareness for automatic real time optimization of the load capacities. The smart substation concept also addresses in the process bus and the station bus other needs such as meteorology, access control, video infrared, virtual fence, monitoring sensors, water and electricity supply, thus creating a global native IEC 61850 solution. A drastic change in environmental conditions and geographical conditions causes big disasters. To save lives, monitoring of these changes is a big challenge. Along with monitoring, corresponding action to be taken within time limit is also important. To achieve this objective timely information about it is required. In this paper a Zigbee based system is proposed for disaster monitoring and management. Paper talks about wireless monitoring of water levels of group of dams and due to drastic change in water level in any river/lake, when to open the gate of which dam and upto which limit. It is decided with the help of sensory data collected from different nodes, placed over an area. The system comprises three parts, sensor nodes, local control room and centre control room. The monitoring is done with the help of data collected from sensor nodes(comprising water level sensor and rain sensor) and discharge sensors are used to control the opening of gates upto certain limit. All the decisions are taken through centre control room, by giving commands to different local control rooms after observing conditions of all areas. A hooter is also available with local control room node to indicate danger alert if water level crosses danger level.
