In harsh and complex electric power system environments of Smart Grid, the observed signal is always disturbed by multiple signal sources, environmental noise or sudden packet loss, generating a significant challenge for reliable remote monitoring. In this paper, we propose a new post-processing detecting scheme for wireless data transmission in the distributed monitoring system to highly tolerate these interferences after transmission procedure and exactly reconstruct the observed signal from rough data in the sink center. Hardware or algorithm implementation to prevent the possible failures is not necessary in sensors, which perfectly solves the problem about changing batteries or updating software for practical application with thousands of energy-constrained sensors. The sink center with high computational capability and abundant energy resource decides the tolerance of interference and retransmission condition, reconstructs the observed signal from the mixing sensed data of sensors by the estimation of frequency domain amplitude via compressed sensing with regarding frequency domain amplitude of the interference signal as 0. In the proposed scheme, we implement compressed sensing with an l(1)-l(2) optimization, where the cost function is defined as a sum of l(1) and l(2) norms with a mixing parameter, which enables us to control the threshold between the observed signal and the interference ones.

This paper suggests a new schema for combining functionalities from the Personal ITS station and Vehicle ITS station. In CoMoSeF - project we are simplifying the In Vehicle Domain architecture by fusing the Human-machine interface (HMI), as specified by ETSI, and the Application Unit into one Application Unit unit that is running on the smartphone. In the Smartphone-Centric Service Model the Application Unit and the HMI reside in a nomadic device and the connection to the Communication and control Unit (CCU) is done utilizing WiFi. Both vehicle and roadside ITS stations communicate with other stations using standardized distributed environmental Notification Messages, DENMs. Those messages are received and sent via the CCU over IEEE802.11p. Messages are used to provide information about a specific driving environment, incident or some other traffic event to other stations. In CoMoSeF-project a basic In-vehicle signage (IVS) application implementation will be released. Also the Probe vehicle or road side unit (RSU) data use case can be easily implemented with this architecture. As an example of the implementation, we introduce a road weather measuring RSU station. The CoMoSeF vehicle ITS station provides a proof-of-concept of a Smartphone-centric service model, which is the first step forward to aftermarket V2X solutions during the transitional phase when VANET systems are not widely available yet.

environmental monitoring, an important application for robots, has begun to be addressed recently with linear least squares regression techniques because they estimate the values of measured attributes and their uncertainty. But several challenges remain when performing adaptive sampling in a communication-constrained distributed multi-robot setting. When the attributes of interest evolve over time (as is natural for many environments) any non-homogeneous spatial variability may necessitate continual re-modeling of the field dynamics and/or re-sampling of the field. This raises questions about the robots' division of labor and workload balance that can be difficult to address when sample information is not stored centrally. This paper tackles these coordination problems efficiently by introducing a sub-division-based modeling technique appropriate for distributed decision-making. We augment Ordinary Kriging to enable representation of a field's (potentially non-homogeneous) evolution through Bayes filtering that characterize the underlying dynamics. This approach not only enables adaptive path planning in the field, but the sub-divided areas lead to a straightforward formulation of the optimal workload distribution through modification of an approximate graph partitioning algorithm. Using a simulated multi-robot sampling scenario, we demonstrate and validate the approach. The experiments show good performance in terms of cross validation using real values and illustrate how hotspots are identified and modeled, in turn affecting the division of labor.

The computer Numerical control (CNC) in manufacturing brings advantages like faster, smoother and easer machining of curves, complex 3-D dimensioned profile. Primitive CNC machine tools could not compromise on product quality and process efficiency. The ability to monitor and control multiple process modules increases productivity, improves the quality of products and enhances prognostic capability for near-zero break down performance in the machining process. The monitoring capabilities of individual machine and the cooperation ability of business bring in an overall optimal performance. This paper proposes an framework for machine tools supervisory system (MSS), which includes an information model at sensors level, a RESTful model at communications level and a distributed model at applications level. This paper presents a prototype system. We show that our approach can meet the demand of manufacturing supervisor.

A new distributed intrinsic fibre optic sensor has been developed by intelligent Optical Systems (IOS) for in situ measurement of dissolved CO2 in brines at conditions relevant for applications in groundwater analysis, Carbon Capture and Storage reservoir surveillance, environmental monitoring of sweet/sea water systems and general water remediation applications. Our tests have shown that the sensor can withstand exposure to increased total pressures (up to 350 psi) and provide a stable signal response proportional to dissolved CO2 concentrations in an aqueous solution. This is the first implementation of a distributed optical sensor, which is sensitive to dissolved CO2 concentration or partial pressure of CO2 and also exhibits feasibility to commercially produce lengths relevant for actual reservoir monitoring. In addition, first promising results from high-pressure experiments suggest that the sensor has potential for eventually being used in long-term installations for measuring dissolved CO2 concentrations at different reservoir depths. With regard to carbon sequestration, these first high-pressure experiments represent a first step in the development of a new fibre optic sensor system that can eventually be employed to continuously monitor the reservoir and overlying rock layers for CO2 leaks, quantify the extend of the potential leak and help to take informed decisions regarding remediation and further leak-containment measures. To solve the problems of bulky, high cost and difficult maintenance existing in the electric parameters monitoring system currently, a new electric energy monitoring system is designed. In the system, MAXQ3180 chip can collect the voltage, current, power factor, harmonic and other parameters of the load. Then the relevant data can be collected and sent to AT89S52 microcontroller through SPI bus to saving and manipulating. Meanwhile, to achieve the goal of decentralized control and centralized management, the system can exchange the relevant data with upper computer by CAN bus communication mode. SmartCoasts is an INTERREG 4A project aimed at providing novel solutions for real-time monitoring and forecasting of coastal water quality. The intended predictive system relies on freely available online weather forecasts and a suite of real-time meteorological data measured across a river catchment. In a preliminary stage, a prototype has been developed taking the real-time data from GPRS loggers deployed at strategically located stations according to a centralised architecture. Even though such system has proven its suitability providing accurate predictions, certain pitfalls that hamper usability have been detected. Adding intelligent capabilities to the sensing nodes might help to overcome such situation. This paper presents a general overview of the current situation and discusses some of the major challenges and difficulties that need to be faced in order to set up a really smart environmental Wireless Sensor Network.

This paper presents how ambient data integration is obtained in Wi-City, i.e. a project promoted by the Regional Government of Sicily that aims at supporting mobile people activities by means of intelligent applications able to generate personalized recommendations that take into account both personal and context parameters. The paper shows how this is made possible by the decreasing cost of the monitoring systems in the IOT era and by the availability of ontology engineering methods to data integration. In particular, aim of the paper is to illustrate a pervasive platform consisting of environmental sensors readily installable on the city and body sensors easily wearable by people that cooperate by means of an ambient data ontology to better support the user decisions in a smart city. Examples of how embedded consumer electronics products are used to monitor the user ambient and how developing an effective ambient data ontology are illustrated to give an implementation account of the proposed platform.
