The worlds' energy demand keeps increasing. To address this demand of energy growth intelligent energy management, monitoring and controlling play a big role besides increasing the energy generation capacity. The future smart grid expected to accommodate and integrates widely dispersed energy sources and distributed energy generations. Advanced information and communication technologies, smart meters and sensors are implemented in smart grid to enable an automated, intelligent and widely distributed energy delivery network. A huge amount of row data is collected by smart meters and sensors from the end user and different part of the network to the computation system, monitoring and controlling centers. An enormous pool of computing resources and storage must be provided to compute this vast amount of data. Processing these data enables the operators to make a knowledge based action as it occurs. This paper discusses the monitoring and controlling of distributed renewable energy generations in smart grid using cloud computing resources. Design and develop a Lab demonstrator and realization of the proposed solution to utilize the advantage of unlimited resources provided by cloud computing.

Today the Smart Grid concept along with the development of distributed Generation (DG) causes the need to get devices that can manage different power flows in the power system. In this paper an intelligent Electronic Device (IED) is presented. This device operates in real time (RT) and is ready to manage DG. It allows monitoring status of the interface between distributed generation and utility network, and manages communications between all involved entities.

In harsh and complex electric power system environments of Smart Grid, the observed signal is always disturbed by multiple signal sources, environmental noise or sudden packet loss, generating a significant challenge for reliable remote monitoring. In this paper, we propose a new post-processing detecting scheme for wireless data transmission in the distributed monitoring system to highly tolerate these interferences after transmission procedure and exactly reconstruct the observed signal from rough data in the sink center. Hardware or algorithm implementation to prevent the possible failures is not necessary in sensors, which perfectly solves the problem about changing batteries or updating software for practical application with thousands of energy-constrained sensors. The sink center with high computational capability and abundant energy resource decides the tolerance of interference and retransmission condition, reconstructs the observed signal from the mixing sensed data of sensors by the estimation of frequency domain amplitude via compressed sensing with regarding frequency domain amplitude of the interference signal as 0. In the proposed scheme, we implement compressed sensing with an l1-l2 optimization, where the cost function is defined as a sum of l1 and l2 norms with a mixing parameter, which enables us to control the threshold between the observed signal and the interference ones.

Wireless camera-based sensor networks have developed as a main group of distributed intelligent systems. These systems involve huge number of low-power camera nodes to display an environment such as museums, military regions, airports, traffic control etc. One of the more important problems in smart networks is camera coverage control. It is necessary to allow automatic tracking of targets and monitoring the environment without human intervention, allowing these systems to scale. Since this problem is NP-hard, even for static targets, so Meta heuristic method such as genetic algorithm, Particle swarm optimization have been proposed to achieve near-optimal solution, which are with high time complexity. To overcome problem the distributed particle swarm optimization is examined in this paper. Simulation results show that the distributed particle swarm optimization results near-optimal solution faster.

Water quality management is inevitably complex, since it involves a number of technical, socio-economic, environmental and political factors with dynamic and interactive features. In planning water quality management, there are uncertainties in many system components and they may affect the overall behavior. It is thus desired that such complexities and uncertainties are effectively addressed, for providing decision support to practical water quality management. This article presents an approach to handle information for a decision support system for water management, aiming multiple objectives, treating heterogeneous factors and considering various affected entities, based on web-services.

Energy efficiency has become one of the major design constraints for current and future cloud infrastructures. One way to conserve energy is to transition idle clusters, network elements and servers into low-powerstates. Therefore, Virtual Machine placement and dynamic re-configuration algorithms have beenrecently proposed for increasing the energy efficiency of virtualized infrastructures. However, these algorithms usually do not consider the amount of energy consumed by the network infrastructure. In this paper, we present a novel energy-aware resource orchestration framework for distributed cloud infrastructures that manages both Network and IT resources with the goal of minimizing the overall power consumption. We also present the algorithms to be executed in a distributed PCE-compliant system to control VM placement in our environment.

Matrix completion has emerged very recently and provides a new venue for low cost data gathering in WSNs. Existing schemes often assume that the data matrix has a known and fixed low-rank, which is unlikely to hold in a practical monitoring system such as weather data gathering. Weather data varies in temporal and spatial domain with time. By analyzing a large set of weather data collected from 196 sensors in ZhuZhou, China, we reveal that weather data have the features of low-rank, temporal stability, and relative rank stability. Taking advantage of these features, we propose an on-line data gathering scheme based on matrix completion theory, named MC-Weather, to adaptively sample different locations according to environmental and weather conditions. To better schedule sampling process while satisfying the required reconstruction accuracy, we propose several novel techniques, including three sample learning principles, an adaptive sampling algorithm based on matrix completion, and a uniform time slot and cross sample model. With these techniques, our MC-Weather scheme can collect the sensory data at required accuracy while largely reduce the cost for sensing, communication and computation. We perform extensive simulations based on the real weather data sets and the simulation results validate the efficiency and efficacy of the proposed scheme.

Connection of wireless sensor and actuator networks (WSANs) to the Internet will enable information flow to these once isolated networks. distributed Ambient Intelligence (AmI) applications, such as remote monitoring and control services, would become possible if Internet connectivity of WSANs is achieved. However, realization of such applications remains challenging with three major obstacles. First, the homogeneity of embedded sensor and actuator nodes and hence homogeneous networks prevents seamless information flow and service provision. Second, current WSAN technology has limited support for Internet connectivity. Protocol conversion with heavy overhead is required on a more powerful gateway device. Third, there are no common interoperable interfaces between different WSAN standards which has become a barrier to heterogeneous WSAN applications. This paper introduces a design for an integrated IP compatible, heterogeneous WSAN composed of the University of Auckland's AWSAM and Oracle's Sun SPOT nodes. This was achieved through the creation of a Hybrid Router, which physically bridges AWSAM and Sun SPOT communication with customized network abstraction, and an Edge Router, which provides Internet connectivity.
