The issue of sustainable development in building engineering has been discussed since the early 90's. The current research seeks to aid in this endeavor by reducing the heating and cooling loads on a building through its envelope, more specifically the wall material. The problem as viewed by most researchers is that the most common building materials, such as concrete and steel, allow for easy heat and mass transfer into buildings. Researchers now look to earth-based materials as passive building materials for increased thermal regulation. The building envelope of earth-based materials is an important buffer for heat and mass transfer into the building environment, but is a part of a bigger picture, which includes hygrothermal loads from the occupants and other facets of the indoor environment, as well as the mechanisms that regulate the indoor environment. This research looks at the soil-based building materials in different light. Our premise is that an understanding of the analogies between thermoregulatory systems in skin, plant, and soils, would inspire us to use soils as intelligent materials in stabilized earth construction with their pore geometries engineered based on these analogies. This biomimetic approach of developing "geodermis" can be broken into two smaller problems: (1) "sensory/nervous systems" to collect and process surrounding hygrothermal data, and (2) "motor system" for semi-active hygrothermal control with the combination of passive regulation by soil and active regulation based on the information from the sensory/nervous system. The Auto Modulating Pattern Detection Algorithm (AMP) is a novel bio-inspired model-free data processing technique that extends the Hilbert-Huang Transform method to detect a "small" but important intermittent event of interest that is usually masked by "dominant" environmental disturbances in various monitoring applications. The ZigBee technology is a new wireless communication technology with the characters of low cost, low complexity and low consumption. Aiming at the requirement of the special environmental and security-defense of SMT workshop, an intelligent SMT workshop monitoring system based on ZigBee wireless sensor network technology is provided. This system makes the SMT workshop discrete devices as an entirety that can be correlate and cooperative by means of wireless sensor networks. SMT workshop temperature and humidity monitoring, automatic burglar alarm, automatic fire alarm can be implemented by the system. A serial of tests have proved that the system can work with flexibility and high control precision, which has important practical significance to unified management of workshop.

A cloud on-line service “Green Wave Traffic” called the Intellectual Road Infrastructure (IRI) is proposed to monitor and control traffic in real-time mode through the use of traffic controllers, RFID cars, global satellite navigation and positioning (GPS, GPRS) in order to improve the quality and safety of vehicle movement, as well as for minimization the time and costs when vehicles are moved at the specified routes. A set of innovative scientific and technological solutions for solving social, human, economic and environmental problems associated with creation and use of a cloud for monitoring and management is developed. All of these technologies and tools are integrated into the automaton model of real-time interaction between monitoring and management clouds, vehicles and road infrastructure. Each car has a virtual model in a cyberspace - an individual cell in the cloud, which is invariant with respect to drivers of vehicles.

The current situation of environmental resources requires their efficient usage through efficient process control. But, process control can not be achieved without an essential component: the communication between all devices, such as sensors, controllers, actuators, programming stations etc. The aim is to achieve the irrigation process of plants in greenhouse conditions. Therefore, it is submitted a comprehensive application that proposes to be a distributed control system including data acquisition and processing, both local and remote monitoring of the process parameters. The distributed system is based on modern equipment: Siemens Simatic PLCs and HMI, Memsic e̅Ko Pro wireless sensors network, level sensors for irrigation tanks and actuators such as on/off valves and pumps. In terms of communication between equipments, an industrial bus and protocols were used - Profinet and wireless communication. The software part is provided by TIA Portal with STEP 7 and WinCC flexible RT and LOGO! Soft Comfort for programming the automation devices. ModbusTCP was used to develop the communication protocol between central devices.

In this paper, underwater sensor network with static sensor nodes is applied in environmental monitoring. The scope of underwater sensor applications can be enhanced by combining underwater sensor network and cloud computing. The underwater sensor cloud management is done by proposing a middleware based on metamodeling. The underwater sensor cloud architecture provides a way for underwater sensor motes to collect, store and retrieve environmental data. The proposed Hadoop framework serves as a middleware for underwater sensor cloud. The middleware that is been considered to use in our research is an intelligent context-aware middleware software that will glue together the network hardware, operating systems, network stacks and applications. It contain a runtime environment that supports and coordinates multiple applications based on multi-agents, and standardized system services such as data aggregation, control and management policies. Underwater Sensor cloud framework enables to ; Extract knowledge from the data it collects and use the information to intelligently react and adapt to its surroundings. It links a remote end user's cognizance with the observed environment. ; Sensor Web is an amorphous network, creating an embedded, distributed monitoring presence that provides a dynamic infrastructure for sensors. ; Reduce the Labor effort and have continuous monitor of the environment ; Provide more intensive and accurate data on the current status of the environment and reduces the reaction time towards the environmental changes ; Since there is no specific routing of information, all pods share everything with one another. This global data sharing allows each pod to be aware of situations beyond its specific location ; Usage of historical data to predict future actions and foresee the disaster to be caused quickly and more precisely ; Framework can support extensibility, easy maintainability and control over the sensors deployed.

This study systematically describes a method based on wireless internet of things to monitor landslides and mudslides. Required data are sampled by distributed sensors, and then they will be transferred to intelligent control gateway via Zigbee protocol. The intelligent control gateway communicates with the control software which runs on a remote computer. Accordingly, this method achieves to remote monitoring of landslides and mudslides. Once sampled data exceeds the critical value, the remote control software will raise the alarm and sent out warns immediately. Compared with other traditional monitoring techniques like macroscopic geological observation measurement and auto-telemetering method this study has lower cost, higher accuracy and better reliability. The monitoring system in this paper is real-time.

Wireless sensor networks (WSN) are used extensively to monitor a wide range of physical and environmental parameters. The collected data can then be used to make various decisions and control actions. The individual sensors nodes of a WSN typically consist of a processor, sensors, and transceiver. As the monitoring device of WSN is increasingly mobile, the need for efficient power management (PM) techniques is becoming crucial in order to extend the life of the battery.

Smart Grid's vision is about a bold program of research, development and demonstration that charts a course towards an electricity supply network that meets the needs of Europe's future. The Smart Grid will include automation software and intelligent electronic hardware systems that control the transmission and distribution power grids. For developing distribution management and functionality of electricity market one essential objective is to make the customer active for efficient use of energy. The evolution from grid to Smart Grid is based on different functions and on the complexity of the nodes starting from interconnection between local control and central control and arriving to the Smart Grid control hub with a great level of independence and a complex functionality. The Smart Grid of the future will act much more like an interactive web, or “energy Internet,” with two-way communication, multi-directional power flow, distributed intelligence including close-loop control, stability and balance performed on site and optimization at its core. The paper presents the authors view about Smart Grid state of the art and point out the stage in standardization and practice. The contribution is on defining the functions performed by each development stage of equipment: bridge, gateway, node and control hub, the control hub architecture and the demonstrator for the gateway and protocol converter.
