The IEEE 1451 standard has enabled data acquisition systems to achieve plug and play operation through the smart transducers, used in environmental and structural health monitoring applications. The usual methodology is to make use of a Network Capable Application Processor (NCAP) that communicates with a Smart Transducer Interface Module (STIM), which gives sensor readings to the end user through the connection of the NCAP. This paper presents a development of an intelligent, data acquisition device that incorporates both an NCAP and a universal interface which supports most of industrial analog transducers in 2, 3 or 4 wire mode as specified in 1451.4 Mixed Model Interface (MMI). The universal interface is capable of identifying and configuring itself to match with smart transducers automatically according to the IEEE 1451.4 Transducer Electronic Datasheet (TEDS) standard. The universal transducer interface is based on reconfigurable hardware blocks present within the Cypress PSoC, which will also function as the Network Capable Application Processor.

Studies have shown that the lateral line found in most fish and some other aquatic organisms is capable of providing hydrodynamic information of the surrounding fluid, which may facilitate many behavioral decisions. Previous work by the group introduced a lateral line inspired feedforward design for underwater vehicle control. The system utilizes pressure sensor arrays to estimate the hydrodynamic force acting on the vehicle such that the additional information will simplify the modeling process and improve the maneuvering accuracy for the control tasks in underwater exploration and environmentalmonitoring. In this paper, the feedforward control design is presented and tested in simulation for trajectory tracking and path following after expressing the force estimation algorithm in the three-dimensional domain. Pressure measurements at multiple locations on the vehicle surface form a least squares approximation of the pressure distribution. Hydrodynamic forces acting on the vehicle are then estimated and passed to the controller for improved performance. Preliminary experimental tests are conducted to vindicate the proposed algorithm.

The transmission of bulk power within a zone of an interconnected region of an electricity grid is controlled by substation automation systems. The substations are where electricity is routed throughout the grid, as well as the control and communication nodes of the network grid. It is crucial for the security of the electricity grid that there should be no break in the network communication. Currently, IEC 61850 specifies the communication interface and gives utility companies interoperability for intelligent Electronic Devices of substation automation systems and is intended to support distributed Wide Area monitoring, control and Protection. This requires ultra real-time data feeds that must be trusted. Currently there is no agreed upon security standard that accompanies IEC 61850. In this paper we propose a framework architecture that extends IEC 61850 to capture trusted substation automation by combining (i) Trusted Computing engines, (ii) a Kerberos multicast authentication service, and (iii) a real-time attribute-based access control system. We then integrate this framework into an open source IEC 61850 profiler (a real-time emulator) for substation automation recently released by SISCO, and show that the integrated profiler is IEC 61850 compliant, while supporting integrity, confidentiality and real-time availability (with end-to-end time for critical data feeds less than 4ms), against strong adversaries (including insiders).

Nowadays production improvement of orchids in flower nursery is relying on intelligentenvironmental management. Such objective can be realized by cooperating with automation controls, computer science, and sensing technologies. In this paper, we introduce our orchid nursing system involving sensors' alignment processes. Here an enclosed mobile nursery is equipped with a low-cost embedded system for monitoring and control applications. Environment's information is then detected by peripheral sensors, which are picked out from coarse ones using efficient error convergent algorithms. According to our elimination result of sensors, proposed alignment mechanism can efficiently converge the deviation between sensors and is promising for real-life nursery construction in the future.

This paper presents the use of PANGEA platform applied to improve healthcare and assistance to elderly and dependent people in geriatric residences. PANGEA is based on Virtual Organizations of agents (VO) and integrates a set of autonomous deliberative agents designed to support the carers' activities and to guarantee that the patients are given the right care. The system makes use of Wireless Sensor Networks and a Real-Time Locating System for providing autonomous responses according to the environment status. Agents are a suitable alternative to manage the enormous quantity of data provided of sensors because they can represent autonomous entities by modelling their capabilities, expertise and intentions. This approach facilitates the inclusion of context-aware capabilities when developing intelligent and adaptable systems, where functionalities can communicate in a distributed and collaborative way. Several tests have been performed to evaluate this framework and preliminary results and conclusions are presented.
