Visual Knowledge Discovery (VKD), the emerging research field exploring the integration between Artificial Intelligence and Visual Analytics is impacting a growing number of contexts. This paper dwells on the potential intersections between the VKD perspective and the legal world, a scenario for many reasons drawn by the idea of combining empirical insights offered by computation with intuitive, visually-enhanced forms of data mining. We will focus on criminal justice, taking the cue from an ongoing experimental research project that investigates novel applications of computational social science methods - complex network analysis - to analyze criminal organizations for both scientific and investigative purposes. The work will describe the VKD solutions devised to allow public prosecutors to visually browse the content of phone calls and environmental tapping gathered during preliminary inquiries. We will discuss how given visualizations - graph-based visualizations in the first place - can enhance text mining techniques helping to capture in-a-glance communication flows, discussions' topics and both structural and functional features of criminal networks at hand.

Information graphics, or infographics, combine elements of date visualization with design and have become an increasingly popular mean for disseminating information. In traditional media, the lack of interactivity in static infographics imposes limitations on information capacity, display space and user perspectives. When dealing with a large or complex amount of information, readability and comprehension can become challenging. However, due to the vast amount of information embedded in traditional cultures, it is challenging to fully showcase on a limited screen space. Therefore, adopting interactive infographics proves to be an effective method for inheriting and promoting traditional cultures. By employing various interactive modes, it presents the diversity and essence of cultures, allowing audiences to intuitively grasp historical and cultural information. This study, based on indepth interactive design methods, delineates eight types of infographics and potential interactive modes. Through concrete design practices and test evaluations, it empirically supports the exploration of interactive modes. The research aims to enhance user engagement, optimize information communication, and adapt to user needs and habits, thereby fostering a broader application of information graphics in cultural heritage.

CogXR is an AI-powered learning companion in academic and professional contexts designed to generate interactive visualized reasoning graphics to help people navigate the complexities of academic concepts easily. For the current prototyping phase, we are using the Quivr API as the fundamental LLM for input processing and Blender for content-based interactive graphics production and XR implementation. The core research phase to be present on the HCII 2024 internationalconference on Augmented Cognition is the use test of improvements in reading cognition with Cog-XR. The fundamental goal here is to validate the level of improvements in cognitive ease in the reading process with the assistance of AI-generated content-based graphics. We plan to conduct the test in academic reading contexts involving interactive sessions with the user groups. We will conduct a comparative user test with two sample groups. Each group will complete a short reading task, take a quiz based on a specific article, and participate in a brief user experience interview. One group will work with Cog-XR visualizations to aid their reading, while the other group will use text abstracts generated by currently trending chat-box PDF readers as assistance. The potential outcomes of the research phase will be the quantitative analysis of the improvement in cognitive ease of the reading process with assistance from AI-generated graphics. Such outcomes could potentially serve as validation for utilizing LLMs to produce visual and graphic interventions to improve human rationality and enhance cognitive ease in professional reading contexts.

Decision Trees (DTs) are one of the most widely used supervised Machine Learning algorithms. The algorithm constructs binary tree data structures that partition the data into smaller segments according to different rules. Hence, DTs can be used as a learning process of finding the optimal rules to separate and classify all items of a dataset. Since the algorithm relies on a decision process similar to rule-based decisions, they are easily interpretable. However, DTs can be difficult to analyse when dealing with large datasets and/or with multiple trees, i.e. ensembles. To ease the analysis and validation of these models, we developed a visual tool which includes a set of visualizations that overview and give details of a set of trees. Our tool aims to provide different perspectives over the same data and provide further insights on how decisions are being made. In this article, we overview our design process, present the different visualization models and their iterative validation. We present a use case in the telecommunications domain. In concrete, we use the visual tool to help understand how a model based on DTs decides which is the best channel (i.e., phonecall, e-mail, SMS) to contact a client.

We use advanced computergraphics and data visualization techniques to uniquely present the distribution of turquoise on Earth, its color variation, and its historical pathways. The Silk Road is a typical historical and cultural information, as an extremely important trade route in history, the significance of the Silk Road is not only in the route itself, it is more like a thread through the development history of human civilization. China's turquoise mines are mainly distributed in the Qinling Mountains, Qilian Mountains and Tianshan Mountains, connecting the mining areas and coincident with the Chinese section of the ancient Northwest Silk Road. The development of turquoise on the Han Silk Road is accurately conveyed through the interactive visual design scheme of information to accurately convey the knowledge context of the land Silk Road. It showcases the historical and cultural value of the Silk Road as a model of exchange, mutual learning and coexistence among civilizations in human history. The value of good data visualization has already been shown in several scenarios. Still, it is not always easy to obtain it, as it depends on factors such as the dataset, the amount of data, task types, the user profile, the type of interaction, etc. To mitigate the challenges addressed, automated or semi-automated systems have been proposed, emphasizing rule-based/heuristic approaches and machine-learning models. However, many of these applications require specialized knowledge and present results (data visualizations) that are not flexible for customization. Papers have highlighted the ease of tools like ChatGPT in creating various tasks, including creating data charts. This facility, in addition to the intelligent computational model involved, is also due to the expressiveness used in the requests to execute the tasks by the users since these tools use Natural Language Interfaces. Despite adopting these tools overgrowing in different scenarios of society, studies on the best way to use them, integrate them into existing processes, or evaluative studies on their effectiveness or efficiency are still incipient. Thus, this paper will evaluate the workload for creating data visualization using ChatGPT 3.5. For assessment, the NASA Task Load Index (Nasa TLX) methodology was applied, and users with experience creating data visualization created two proposed scenarios. The preliminary results showed high temporal and mental demand, mainly due to the vocabulary used and the completeness of the user instructions. The average time to create and perform InfoVis tasks in two proposed evaluation scenarios was 33 and 44 minutes, and 14 queries were applied on average for both scenarios. The direct consequence was that the users have redone the requests and improved the instructions at each new iteration, and all users completed the proposed tasks.
