In this paper, we present optic flow algorithms which are based on a variety of increasingly sophisticated data terms. Such data terms allow to better identify correspondences between points in either image than the traditional intensity difference since they characterize the local image structure more uniquely. We present an algorithmic framework which allows to directly incorporate arbitrary data terms: In contrast to traditional approaches the minimization scheme is not based on local linearization. In particular, we quantitatively compare the classical intensity similarity with nonconvex truncated data terms, with a patch-based intensity difference and with a patch-based normalized cross correlation. Experiments demonstrate that at the expense of additional runtime more advanced data terms may help to improve flow estimates.

The worldwide demand for speed in applications challenges the deployment of compute-intensive algorithms at the power-constrained edge. Novel embedded devices such as the heterogeneous Vision Processing Units (VPUs) emerge as a promising solution for low-power embedded imaging/vision applications, as they accelerate computer vision algorithms and convolutional neural networks with only 1-2W. In this brief, we propose a development methodology for exploiting the full potential of the VPU heterogeneity and providing sufficient acceleration within their restricted power envelope. Based on this methodology, we demonstrate the development paradigm on the Myriad VPUs and report experimental results from the implementation of demanding image processing kernels.

An interactive graphic viewer, ChromoScope, was developed to explore scientific visualization of complicated genome data. Escherichia coli was selected as the test organism. An ASN.1 data set has been built for the entire E. coli chromosome, including a genetic map, a physical (ordered restriction) map, the alignment between the two maps, Kohara clones and some short repeat features. The E. coli sequence is modeled as a segmented sequence, incorporating both the sequence and the physical map data. The alignment between the contig and the published sequences is stored as sequence history, allowing direct access to the same sequence in the public databases. The alignment is displayed graphically, with both the sequence alignment and feature annotations. The alignment viewer also supports a detailed text display, providing information to resolution at residue level with annotated features.

Network bandwidth has always been a key issue for multimedia protocols. Many potential users of networked multimedia protocols will continue to have low bandwidth network connections for some time: copper wire ISDN, infra-red, cellular modems, etc.. Compression provides potential relief for users of slow networks by increasing effective bandwidth. Higher Bandwidth X (HBX) introduces a new technique, based on arithmetic coding and statistical modeling, for compressing structured data. Applied to the X networked graphics protocol, this technique yields 6.3:1 compression across a representative set of traces, performing twice as well as the popular LZW-based Xremote compression protocol. HBX's coding techniques are generally applicable to the graphics and imaging subset of multimedia protocols. Future work will determine whether HBX's coding techniques can be applied to audio and video streams as well.
