Template matching is a traditional technique of computer Vision whose advantages and disadvantages are known. However, advances in computer hardware allow computing it effectively with the use of SIMD instruction set, GPUs or multi-core systems. The computation of that low-level primitive in sub millisecond scale would improve high theoretical methods if they are used with high efficient primitives. This paper presents the comparative results of basic template matching by using SIMD instructions, multi-core systems and multi-GPU implementations. The results of this study will show that the high-specialized instruction in modern releases of SIMD and the use of multi-core systems outperforms the implementations based on GPUs for small mask size due to memory transfer cost. However, for big mask size GPU and SIMD systems have similar performance.

In image processing, the curve comparisons can be achieved by extracting the curve information from the bitmapped images. The revealed curves are represented in the forms of the sets of pixel information. Thus, the determination of curve matching is to compare pixel by pixel, which is time consuming. On the contrary, for vector graphics images, there have been no methods written in the literatures referred about directly comparing the parametric curves either in the rational or non-rational (polynomial) forms. In this paper, the relationships between two curves can be classified into 4 main categories: curve congruence, curve proportion, curve similarity and curve difference. The comparison algorithms for two given parametric curves either non-rational or rational curves are then established. These algorithms can be simply determined by verifying some important geometric features, e.g., the blending functions, the locations of their control points and their weights. In this connection, since a rational curve can be transformed into a non-rational one, the curve comparison algorithms for polynomial curves can also be applied for the cases of the rational curves.

We present an opportunity for the visual sensing of depth and 3D velocity using a passive sensor that has extremely low power requirements. This opportunity comes from a new mathematical constraint, which we derive, that relates depth and velocity to spatial and temporal derivatives of image values captured by a coded-aperture camera that observes a moving scene. The constraint exploits the fact that there are two causes of brightness change in this situation: features move across the image due to motion, and contrast changes because of time-varying optical blur. The sensor that could be realized from this constraint is called a focal flow sensor. We analytically characterize the working volume of such a sensor in relation to its size, and we provide simulation results that affirm its viability.

In the petroleum industry, huge simulations are analyzed with powerful graphics tools. Undoubtedly interactivity increases the efficiency of these tools. Is immersion, popularized in VR systems nowadays, also a key factor? Interactivity can be enhanced by various means, such as dedicated hardware, efficient polygonal extraction algorithms and geometry simplification. Special visualization techniques must be used for refined and multiblock structured grids. There are various input devices and navigational methods to manipulate 3D datasets. Two-dimensional input devices can be used for direct 3D manipulations which give the illusion of handling a real object. Many 6 DOF input devices are available. We have tested a mechanical joystick designed by V. Hayward at McGill University. It does not have some of the disadvantages of electromagnetic sensors (lag times, high noise, low accuracy) and it can be naturally used for control rate motion, which allows precise displacements in large virtual spaces. Conversely the ability of electromagnetic sensors to track various movements in large physical workspaces is quite useful for immersive visualization. Objects can be selected by a flying stylus. These new types of navigational tools combining stereoscopy, head-tracking and 3D manipulation tools will probably prevail over traditional tools which will still survive for some time because they have achieved some kind of perfection on their own.

Due to its inherent limitations, the conventional quantisation index modulation (QIM) cannot be applied to reversible watermarking directly. An improvement is done in this work to QIM to make it suitable for reversible watermarking. Based on the improved QIM (IQIM), a reversible watermarking scheme for 2D engineering graphics is proposed. The relative amplitudes and relative phases of entity vertices are used as hosts to carry the watermark. Experimental results indicate that they can strike a good balance between capacity, imperceptibility, robustness, security and complexity.
