The 9th internationalconference on Medical Image Computing and computer Assisted Intervention, MICCAI 2006, was held in Copenhagen, Denmark at the Tivoli Concert Hall with satellite workshops and tutorials at the IT University of Copenhagen, October 1-6, 2006. The conference has become the premier internationalconference with - depth full length papers in the multidisciplinary ?elds of medical image c- puting, computer-assisted intervention, and medical robotics. The conference brings together clinicians, computer scientists, engineers, physicists, and other researchers and o?ers a forum for the exchange of ideas in a multidisciplinary setting. MICCAI papers are of high standard and have a long lifetime. In this v- ume as well as in the latest journal issues of Medical Image Analysis and IEEE Transactions on Medical imaging papers cite previous MICCAIs including the ?rst MICCAI conference in Cambridge, Massachusetts, 1998. It is obvious that the community requires the MICCAI papers as archive material. Therefore the proceedingsofMICCAIarefrom2005andhenceforthbeing indexedbyMedline. Acarefulreviewandselectionprocesswasexecutedinordertosecurethebest possible program for the MICCAI 2006 conference. We received 578 scienti?c papers from which 39 papers were selected for the oral program and 193 papers for the poster program.

This paper presents 4D User Experience design principles (4D-UX), as well as a software implementation and applications of how to communicate spatial and temporal data. The foundation is built on tightly coupling multiple dimensions into one application, adding a sequential story line and finally decluttering the front-end to enhance the emotional and cognitive functions of audiences. The framework suggests a combination of a sequential story-telling approach with 2D, 3D, 4D elements such as interactive sliders added to the flow of argumentation. With those design principles in place, the authors then present a software platform called "Singapore Views" based on the "Unity" game engine. The communication challenge of research groups that had to convey the insights on their studies about the "Urban Heat Island Effect" and "Dense and Green Building Typologies" in Singapore to a diverse group of stakeholders were taken as examples. The paper presents a multi-disciplinary approach with authors from computer science, architecture, design, communication, business administration and urban development. One of the main advantages of millimeter wave (MMW) imaging radar systems results from the fact that their imaging performance does nearly not depend on atmospheric effects such as fog, rain and snow. That is the reason that MMW radar seems to be one of the most promising sensors for enhanced vision systems (EVS), which can aid the pilot during approach, landing and taxiing, especially under bad weather conditions. Compared to other imaging devices (TV, IR etc.), MMW radar systems deliver a lower image resolution and update rate, and have a worse signal to noise ratio. Moreover, the commonly proposed method of the perspective view projection (''out the window view'') in EVS applications results in some imaging errors and artefacts. These sensor specific effects should be taken into account during the presently conducted EVS research and development. To get the opportunity of studying imaging radar systems in ground based research environments, we have developed a new type of a MMW radar sensor simulator. Our approach is based on detailed terrain and/or airport data bases, as they are available for normal visual simulations or VR applications. We have augmented these data bases with some specific attributes which describe object surface properties with respect to MMW. Our approach benefits from the state of the art of high speed computergraphics hard- and software (e.g. z-buffering, lighting, materials, texture mapping). It is implemented in C/C++ and uses the OpenGL graphic standard and the SGI Performer data base handler. It runs on every SGI graphic workstation, and achieves an image update rate of about 20 Hz, which is more than actual available radar systems deliver. One of the main advantages of our approach is, that it can be integrated easily in emergent multisensor based enhanced vision systems and it is a usefull tool for EVS research and development.

Environment maps are extensively used as natural light sources in realistic rendering. We propose a stratified sampling scheme for environment maps by first stratifying the maps into a set of rectangular regions with median cut method, then estimating the contribution of the regions with Monte Carlo integration techniques. In this way, illumination, surface reflectance and spatial distribution are all taken into consideration for the generation of the light samples. Compared with the existing biased lighting techniques, the presented scheme produces unbiased rendering results with less noise and better shadow boundaries, particularly at low sampling rates. The proposed spatial distribution of the samples also helps to overcome the sample-clumping problem in traditional illumination-based importance sampling method. The collision of computer-based technologies and the medical environment is resulting in an increasingly electronic multimedia patient record, consisting of not only the traditional types of data (e.g., clinic notes and laboratory reports), but also digital images (e.g., computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging) and other visual representations of patient data (e.g., pulmonary function graphs and urodynamic charts). Given the increasing amount of data made available to physicians, it is not only critical that the totality of a patient's medical record be accessible to a clinician, but that the diverse data be integrated and presented in a manner conducive to patient management: key information should be easily discovered. This paper describes a problemcentric time-based visualization of urologic conditions, whereby a patient's medical history is automatically organized around a medical problem and presented as a graphic chronology. Urology-related data in the patient medical record is organized in accord with an expert constructed knowledge-base, and plotted on a timeline using iconic representations. The user interface permits the physician to quickly view multimedia data and to visualize relationships between events in the patient's history.
