There are situations where we need to understand a person's health register data, get an overview of it and inspect the details of interest, preferably in a short period of time. Typical situations are a doctor seeing a patient for the very first time, or a researcher trying to understand what makes a person an outlier in a patient cohort. We have developed a visualization tool, called LifeTrack, that will show a person's whole health register history in a single view. The structure of the LifeTrack data view is based on concepts familiar to the target audience, and allows one to see both the overview and details of the data.

With the enhancement of relatively inexpensive human motion capture technology using cameras and infrared sensors, the measurement of human body motion has been easier and its applications have expanded dramatically. We are using this technology to develop a visualization system for the assistance of dance skill improvement by visualizing differences and changes in the motions of novice dancers while theur repetitive practice of the same dance. This system applies a body size correction between the dancer and the instructor, a time correction that aligns the timing of the motions, and a spatial correction that aligns the dancer's position and body orientation. The system then applies a clustering process is to the body parts, and visualizes the clustering results. Users can then select multiple arbitrary motions and animate them to check the differences and changes in the dancer's motions. This paper firstly presents the processing flow and functions of the visualization system, and then introduces the results of the motion data of three novice dancers in three different dance genres to verify the effectiveness of this method.

Data stories are a powerful way to present information and data in a way that is easy to understand and engage with. They consist of data, the visual form, and the narrative component. By combining these elements effectively, data stories can drive behavioral change and lead to a call to action. In two projects dedicated to data stories, we developed an approach that separates the data from possible narratives and adapts it to three audiences of different expertise and age, being inspired by the medieval philosopher Averroes. The method can help to take full advantage of data storytelling and describe complex data in a meaningful way that compels people to act on it.

The expansion of the use of a machine learning (ML) technology in multiple domains heavily depends on acceptance of these models by end users and their abilities to understand the patterns discovered by machine learning algorithms. The simplicity and understandability of those patterns by the domain expert is critical for success of such ML explorations. This paper proposes a method for designing lossless compact and interpretable machine learning visual patterns to be easily captured and remembered by the domain experts due to their compactness and simplicity. This glyph approach is illustrated with a "bird" glyph. This glyph is a combination of Stick Figures and a type of General Line Coordinates known as Shifted Paired Coordinates. The efficiency of the approach is demonstrated on several benchmark machine learning data sets.

Traditional ecological survey methods are expensive and time-consuming as they typically involve a domain expert in the field. As a result of this, continuous audio recordings are playing an ever more critical role in conservation and biodiversity monitoring. However, listening to these recordings is often infeasible, as they can be thousands of hours long. The knowledge of domain experts can be efficiently leveraged using visualization. Traditionally, spectrograms are used to visualize audio data. However, there is a limit to the duration of audio that can fit on a computer screen as a spectrogram. Several techniques have been adapted to overcome this. Each of these techniques has its own set of advantages and disadvantages that make it ideal for some situations but unsuitable for others. In this paper, we propose a novel visualization based on embeddings produced by Frequency Preserving Autoencoders. We evaluate by visually comparing with traditional spectrogram and spectral index false-color spectrogram, using human-generated annotations as a baseline. We find that calls from some species are more consistently visible in our autoencoder-based visualization, while others are more clearly visible in the alternative visualizations. This novel visualization presents a new opportunity to assist ecologists in identifying bird calls in long-duration audio, if calls are difficult to identify using other methods.

GeoVisual Analytics often uses a wide range of visualization techniques in combination with human interactions. However, in order to improve urban planning decisions and expand the knowledge base about spatio-temporal correlations in cities, we identify high and sometimes difficult-to-overcome data and visualization complexity. Therefore, users need targeted support to reduce this complexity and understand complex multidimensional data. This paper proposes an interactive 3D visualization approach for analyzing spatiotemporal correlations. Effective visual explanations in user-oriented guidance with storytelling elements support this technique. We adapt the approach of flow maps to visualize both resulting correlations and the underlying density of possible destinations from an existing geoanalytical process. Our interactive step-by-step guidance with four narratives aims to create a balance between the author and the user. We evaluated our prototype with various domain experts. The evaluation confirms our approach and improves users' understanding of data and spatio-temporal correlations in urban areas.

Each player of competitive Karuta has a unique posture and a style of swiping the cards, which are important factors in winning a game that requires the swift acquisition of all 50 cards. It is essential to analyze the characteristics of a player's posture in order to achieve the swift acquisition. While previous studies on the analysis of posture of competitive Karuta required special devices to be attached to the body for measuring brain activity or analyzing wrist acceleration to determine the speed of a player. Such approaches were problematic since they may interfere with the natural movement of the players. To address this issue, we are developing a visualization system that displays the three-dimensional skeletal movements of multiple players in response to a read the poetry of Karuta. We utilize skeletal information extracted from videos using Mediapipe, developed by Google, to compare and analyze the movements of different players. This paper presents the results of our analysis, which compared the swiping movements of multiple players using our proposed system.

As data becomes more and more pervasive in our daily lives, supporting people in getting visual insights into their data is an important challenge to address. However, as data visualization literacy is still low, a gap between designers' mental model and users is not uncommon. To best pick up users where they are, we propose to include the data mental models of users into the design process. In this paper, we present our investigations in this direction by incorporating user sketches of their idea about their personal data stored at online services as a basis of our designs. We present our design study on personal data visualization interfaces resulting in a set of user sketches for three types of user groups and in three visualization interfaces. Finally, we reflect on our learnings and identify pitfalls to support other researchers in applying similar approaches.
