visualization of water surface is a hot topic in computergraphics. In this paper, we presented a fast method to generate wide range of water surface with good image quality both near and far from the viewpoint. This method utilized uniform mesh and Fractal Perlin noise to model water surface. Mipmapping technology was enforced to the surface textures, which adjust the resolution with respect to the distance from the viewpoint and reduce the computing cost. Lighting effect was computed based on shadow mapping technology, Snell's law and Fresnel term. The render pipeline utilizes a CPU-GPU shared memory structure, which improves the rendering efficiency. Experiment results show that our approach visualizes water surface with good image quality at real-time frame rates performance.

To examine how computer technology can produce delicate, audience-inspiring presentations like "Noh", we attempted to create a Noh mask (Ko-omote) using a 3D computergraphics technique, by only referring to a carved wooden mask. It was possible to detect several characteristics of the mask's structure in the creation process. Rendering images showed the possibility that such a specific structure is closely related to effects of subtle facial expression changes. In order to bring more diverse effect to audiences, we also attempted to create a computer animation combining the mask model with story, movement and background images. This paper suggests the possibility of acquiring profound experiences with the perception and expression of "face" for both viewers and creators by using a computergraphics technique.

This paper presents an approach to extracting the separation surfaces from periodic 2D time-dependent vector fields based on a recently introduced path line oriented topology. This topology is based on critical path lines which repeat the same spatial cycle per time period. Around those path lines there are areas of similar asymptotic flow behavior (basins) which are captured by a 2D Poincare map as a discrete dynamical system. Due to pseudo discontinuities in this map and the discrete integration scheme, separatrices between the basins can't be obtained as integral curves. Instead we choose a point-wise approach to segment the Poincare map and apply image analysis algorithms to extract the 2D separation curves. Starting from those curves we integrate separation surfaces which partition the periodic 2D time-dependent vector field into areas of similar path line behavior. We apply our approach to a number of data sets to demonstrate its utility.

Virtual reality (VR) offers potentials and challenges for teaching and learning. For learners of elementary mathematics, it has been suggested that VR offers promising ways of representing numeracy (number and operations) concepts in the form of virtual manipulatives (VM). This project aims at investigating VR learning environments to elementary numeracy education using 3D VM. This paper focuses on 3 aspects. The first is the evaluation of an existing mathematical virtual learning environment (MAVLE) in order to analyze and evaluate the current 2D virtual manipulatives. The results of this study will form the basis for the design and development of an innovative conceptual prototype - MAVLE. While the second step is to construct a framework for the MAVLE prototype by highlighting other factors that are important for system implementation. The third aspect will be applying the outcomes from other two stages and providing benchmarks and guidance's to the future design and development of virtual learning environment.

Different imaging modalities give insight to anatomical and functional information which assist diagnosis and therapy planning in medicine. Registration and consecutive visualization allow to combine the image data and thereby convey more meaningful images to the clinician. We propose a new registration technique and volume visualization approaches of the registered results. As a new optimization measure of registration, we define a Q-function based on the estimated log-likelihood function. First, we segment a medical volume data using the fast matching and geometric deformable model. Next, we use the hidden Markov random field model and the Gaussian mixture model to statistically represent the spatial dependency and the intensity distribution of each voxel at the surface region. Volume visualization systems are presented to create the interprétable multidimensional data representation during registration process. To visualize the performance of the proposed registration method, we conduct the direct and the indirect volume rendering. The direct approach is based on the volume ray casting technique and the indirect visualization method is based on the surface fitting algorithm. The experimental results show that our proposed method has great potential power to register and visualize multimodality volume images.

An Arabic font is difficult to fit as it is cursive in character, having varying curves and cusps. Here, the Arabic character is represented as an outline font fitted with G 1 rational Bezier cubic curves. As a method in reverse engineering, the Arabic character is created by way of digitizing an image that already exists and then fitting G 1 curves automatically to the outline of the digitized image. The outline font representation is done in several phases - contour extraction of font image, corner point's detection and lastly contour segment fitting. Image is considered as binary and boundary is obtained accordingly. Eigenvalues of covariance matrix and the concept of region of support are employed to search for the corners of the Arabic characters which are of varying degrees of smoothness. G 1 rational Bezier cubics, iteratively determined, are used in the last step. The weights are adjusted automatically to get curves that are as close as need be to the digitized data points. This technique can be extended to visualizing outlines of other contour-based images automatically
