Hyperbolic metamaterials (HMMs) have emerged as attractive platforms for deep sub-wavelength imaging across the electromagnetic spectrum due to their distinct hyperbolic dispersion characteristic. However, the actual applicability of HMMs for broad-band imaging is hampered by undesirable imaging artifacts. In this work, we examine the image transmission characteristics of silicon-based HMMs at THz frequencies. Our numerical simulations show that, while the suggested metamaterial can resolve feature sizes below the diffraction limit, it produces significant image artifacts. To overcome this issue, we use a range of deep learning models such as VGG16, MobileNet, SqueezeNet, and AlexNet to categorize visual artifacts. Through considerable testing, we obtain an astonishing classification accuracy of 100%, proving the efficiency of deep learning approaches in reducing image artifacts in HMM-based imaging systems. This research establishes the path for the creation of more durable and dependable imaging systems based on hyperbolic metamaterials.

visualization as a means to generate hypotheses and to communicate insights on digitized cultural heritage data sets has become more and more important in the recent years. While many digital humanities researchers transform their data in order to be processed with ready-to-use tools, others engage in interdisciplinary collaborations with visualization scholars aiming to design novel solutions and interactive visual interfaces as occurring data features are more carefully mapped to visual attributes. Many of those collaborations suffer from loss of time at the beginning of the project as scholars with diverse research backgrounds require to understand each others' mindsets, ways of thinking and research interests. This paper reports on three years of teaching visualization design for digital humanities projects. It provides an overview of theoretical course contents, practical training, collaboration setups-involving computer science, digital humanities as well as humanities students who experienced typical collaboration obstacles-and remarkable project results.

Generating images from semantic visual knowledge is a challenging task, that can be useful to condition the synthesis process in complex, subtle, and unambiguous ways, compared to alternatives such as class labels or text descriptions. Although generative methods conditioned by semantic representations exist, they do not provide a way to control the generation process aside from the specification of constraints between objects. As an example, the possibility to iteratively generate or modify images by manually adding specific items is a desired property that, to our knowledge, has not been fully investigated in the literature. In this work we propose a transformer-based approach conditioned by scene graphs that, conversely to recent transformer-based methods, also employs a decoder to autoregressively compose images, making the synthesis process more effective and controllable. The proposed architecture is composed by three modules: 1) a graph convolutional network, to encode the relationships of the input graph;2) an encoder-decoder transformer, which autoregressively composes the output image;3) an auto-encoder, employed to generate representations used as input/output of each generation step by the transformer. Results obtained on CIFAR10 and MNIST images show that our model is able to satisfy semantic constraints defined by a scene graph and to model relations between visual objects in the scene by taking into account a user-provided partial rendering of the desired target.

Recognizing grocery products at scale is an open issue for computer-vision systems due to their subtle visual differences. Typically the problem is addressed as a classification problem, e.g., by learning a CNN, for which all classes that are to be distinguished need to be known at training time. We instead observe that the products within stores change over time. Sometimes new products are put on shelves, or existing appearances of products are changed. In this work, we demonstrate the use of deep metric learning for grocery recognition, whereby classes during inference are unknown while training. We also propose a new triplet mining strategy that uses all known classes during training while preserving the ability to perform cross-folded validation. We demonstrate the applicability of the proposed mining strategy using different, publicly available real-world grocery datasets. The proposed approach preserves the ability to distinguish previously unseen groceries while increasing the precision by up to 5 percent.

As an important component of transformer station, the smooth operation of the electrical circuit has always been a focus of attention. Obviously, transformer station electrical circuits may encounter some fault problems that may affect power supply work. In order to ensure the safe and reliable operation of the power system, the concept of smart grid has emerged, and the digital graphic processing of transformer station electric furnace is a very important work. The core idea of this article also lied in this. Due to the many drawbacks of traditional digital graphics work, this article decided to introduce wireless intelligent networks to incorporate functions such as wireless interconnection, intelligent analysis, and intelligent decision-making to assist in digital graphics work. Through the above steps, the digital visualization of transformer station electrical circuits could be carried out more smoothly and efficiently, allowing power system operation and maintenance personnel to more conveniently monitor circuit problems and troubleshoot fault problems.

This paper explores the potential of low-cost sensing technologies for assessing the condition of cycling track pavement. As cycling gains popularity, the demand for efficient pavement maintenance solutions increases. Machine survey-based pavement condition assessment often relies on expensive, specialized equipment, which is not always suitable for cycle tracks due to limited budgets and accessibility, hence the need for low-cost solutions. The integration of low-cost sensing technologies and data collection, such as inertial measurement units (IMUs), low-cost imaging sensors, and crowdsourced data collection, presents a promising alternative for cycle track pavement surface assessment. This paper highlights the advantages of employing out-of-the-shelf devices such as smartphones with GPS, cameras, and IMU, or action cameras with GPS and IMU to collect images, their location, and vehicle vibration in a specific orientation. This data is then used to estimate pavement roughness, detect surface distress, and compute pavement surface condition. Literature reviews reveal a significant gap in the utilization of these technologies for cycle tracks, suggesting a promising area for further research and application. Furthermore, it proposes a software framework for data collection and visualization to combine these technologies to enhance the efficiency and reliability of pavement assessment for cycling infrastructure at a lower cost than machine-based pavement assessment and faster and more quantitative than manual surveys. This paper emphasizes the need for more practical and scalable solutions that support the maintenance of sustainable transportation systems. This paper proposes a learnable nonlinear activation mechanism specifically for convolutional neural network (CNN) termed as LENI, which learns to enhance the negative information in CNNs. In sharp contrast to ReLU which cuts off the negative neurons and suffers from the issue of "dying ReLU", LENI enjoys the capacity to reconstruct the dead neurons and reduce the information loss. Compared to improved ReLUs, LENI introduces a learnable approach to process the negative phase information more properly. In this way, LENI can enhance the model representational capacity significantly while maintaining the original advantages of ReLU. As a generic activation mechanism, LENI possesses the property of portability and can be easily utilized in any CNN models through simply replacing the activation layers with LENI block. Extensive experiments validate that LENI can improve the performance of various baseline models on various benchmark datasets by a clear margin (up to 1.24% higher top-1 accuracy on ImageNet-1k) with negligible extra parameters. Further experiments show that LENI can act as a channel compensation mechanism, offering competitive or even better performance but with fewer learned parameters than baseline models. In addition, LENI introduces the asymmetry to the model structure which contributes to the enhancement of representational capacity. Through visualization experiments, we validate that LENI can retain more information and learn more representations. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2023.

Adopting Neural Radiance Fields (NeRF) to long-duration dynamic sequences has been challenging. Existing methods struggle to balance between quality and storage size and encounter difficulties with complex scene changes such as topological changes and large motions. To tackle these issues, we propose a novel neural video-based radiance fields (NeVRF) representation. NeVRF marries neural radiance field with image-based rendering to support photo-realistic novel view synthesis on long-duration dynamic inward-looking scenes. We introduce a novel multi-view radiance blending approach to predict radiance directly from multi-view videos. By incorporating continual learning techniques, NeVRF can efficiently reconstruct frames from sequential data without revisiting previous frames, enabling long-duration free-viewpoint video. Furthermore, with a tailored compression approach, NeVRF can compactly represent dynamic scenes, making dynamic radiance fields more practical in real-world scenarios. Our extensive experiments demonstrate the effectiveness of NeVRF in enabling long-duration sequence rendering, sequential data reconstruction, and compact data storage.

As a non-contact measuring instrument, 3D surface profilometer has many advantages such as high precision, good repeatability and high visualization, and has become the mainstream measuring equipment in the field of micro and nano detection. Single cut line sample, multi cut line sample and step sample have important applications in micro/nano calibration field. In this paper, 3D surface profilometer is used to measure two kinds of samples. The results are compared with those obtained by National Institute of Metrology. The results show that the results are similar to those obtained by other measuring equipment, which proves the powerful function of 3D surface profilometer. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.
