Acquisition of high-dimensional spatially-varying bidirectional reflectance distribution functions (SVBRDFs) is extremely challenging for scenes that exhibit high-frequency angular effects-in particular, iridescence-that requires dense sampling across spatial and angular dimensions of reflectance. This is further complicated by the need to illuminate and observe the material along grazing angles, where the effects of Iridescence are often most prominent. This paper proposes an imaging system for acquiring the reflectance associated with such iridescent materials. Our system uses an imaging setup, consisting of an ellipsoidal mirror and a light field camera, that can acquire a dense slice of the SVBRDF across spatial and observation angle axes from a single image, including at grazing observation angles. We use an active illumination setup to sparsely sample the incident illumination angles, thereby providing an acquisition setup that only requires a few (light field) photographs. To compensate for the lack of density in the incident angles, we train a neural model that implicitly represents the SVBRDF, creating a light-weight data-driven reflectance function that enables interpolation of the missing measurements. We show that our imaging system can reconstruct textures that exhibit spatially-varying iridescence stemming from diffraction as well as structural coloration.

Insect compound eyes have been garnered a great attention in the fields of optical design, owing to their remarkably economical, but sophisticated visual structures and process. However, a rigid and planar imaging sensor hardly supporting curved micro-optics hinders full implementation of insect vision system. Here, we present a bioinspired artificial compound eye camera for wide field of view and high-resolution imaging based on the hemispherical microlens array and tapered imaging fiber bundles. The hemispherical microlens array focuses a wide field of view image on the curved facet of tapered fiber bundle, which relays the image to another facet contacted on commercial image sensor providing high resolution. The integrated compound eye module suggests a facile way to fill the technical gap for practical applications of artificial insect vision systems.

Fever is the body's natural defense mechanism against infection. Baby's fever can signal a severe infection since they have more vulnerable bodies. Parents and caregivers are sometimes unaware of a rapid rise in a baby's temperature, which is a major concern among medical practitioners. Therefore, an automated real-time vision-based temperature monitoring for babies is proposed. The proposed system comprises 24x32 and 1080x30 thermal and RGB cameras, respectively, and a low-cost linux-based computing unit that utilizes a computer vision pipeline to detect the temperatures of both the baby and the parent. The temperatures are then compared to each other to reduce the impact of exterior environmental influences on the baby's reported temperature and improve accuracy. Results are then processed, analyzed, and transmitted to a system interface for visualization. The results obtained reveal that the system can successfully identify faces, distinguish between the parent and the baby's face, and alert the parent whenever the baby's temperature is above the average range with an accuracy of 83.33%. The system allows parents to seek medical attention if their baby's temperature continues to increase while asleep.

The study proposes a novel deep learning model, a Convolutional Autoencoder with modified loss functions (CAE-MLS) for explainable breast cancer diagnosis through histopathology image analysis. To enhance model interpretability, we used Gradient-weighted Class Activation Mapping (GradCAM) visualization, which emphasizes areas of interest that affect the model's diagnostic decisions. The optimization of the model is achieved by using a custom loss function which combines mean absolute error, mean squared error, and structural similarity index to balance pixel-level accuracy with quality in image reconstruction. Our model achieves 91\% classification accuracy, with 93% precision for Malignant tumour detection. The proposed model attained a best-balanced performance for both classes, with F1-scores of 0.88 and 0.92 for benign and malignant cases in the 10x magnifications, respectively. Grad-CAM visualizations confirm the model's ability to focus on clinically relevant image regions at both 10x and 40x magnifications, providing healthcare professionals with transparent insights into the decision-making process.

High-resolution electron microscopy imaging allows neuroscientists to reconstruct not just entire cells but individual cell substructures (i.e., cell organelles) as well. Based on these data, scientists hope to get a better understanding of brain function and development through detailed analysis of local organelle neighborhoods. In-depth analyses require efficient and scalable comparison of a varying number of cell organelles, ranging from two to hundreds of local spatial neighborhoods. Scientists need to be able to analyze the 3D morphologies of organelles, their spatial distributions and distances, and their spatial correlations. We have designed Barrio as a configurable framework that scientists can adjust to their preferred workflow, visualizations, and supported user interactions for their specific tasks and domain questions. Furthermore, Barrio provides a scalable comparative visualization approach for spatial neighborhoods that automatically adjusts visualizations based on the number of structures to be compared. Barrio supports small multiples of spatial 3D views as well as abstract quantitative views, and arranges them in linked and juxtaposed views. To adapt to new domain-specific analysis scenarios, we allow the definition of individualized visualizations and their parameters for each analysis session. We present an in-depth case study for mitochondria analysis in neuronal tissue and demonstrate the usefulness of Barrio in a qualitative user study with neuroscientists.

Image-based rendering (IBR) technique enables presenting real scenes interactively to viewers and hence is a key component for implementing VR telepresence. The quality of IBR results depends on the set of pre-captured views, the rendering algorithm used, and the camera parameters of the novel view to be synthesized. Numerous methods were proposed for optimizing the set of captured images and enhancing the rendering algorithms. However, from which regions IBR methods can synthesize satisfactory results is not yet well studied. In this work, we introduce the concept of renderability, which predicts the quality of IBR results at any given viewpoint and view direction. Consequently, the renderability values evaluated for the 5D camera parameter space form a field, which effectively guides viewpoint/trajectory selection for IBR, especially for challenging large-scale 3D scenes. To demonstrate this capability, we designed 2 VR applications: a path planner that allows users to navigate through sparsely captured scenes with controllable rendering quality and a view selector that provides an overview for a scene from diverse and high quality perspectives. We believe the renderability concept, the proposed evaluation method, and the suggested applications will motivate and facilitate the use of IBR in various interactive settings.

The maintenance and management of power equipment in substation is the key to ensuring the power system operation's stability. Currently, the substation information management system needs more intuition and authenticity when displaying information in a 2D way, and it is challenging to render 3D model data. To solve this problem, on the basis of using 3ds Max to build the substation 3D model, the coarse-grained culling algorithm based on CPU and GPU batch processing technology is adopted to improve the rendering efficiency of 3D model data. Based on Unity3D platform and MySQL database, a 3D visualization management platform for substation equipment is designed and developed. Interactive functions such as roaming from different perspectives, visual information management, and query and update of equipment maintenance information are designed, which can intuitively display the components, specific information, and operating status of each device. Finally, a regional substation scene is taken as an example for testing, and good application results are achieved. © 2022 IEEE.
